Welcome to Forgotten Tales story character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.
Here are some reminders about how this all works:
- Although not required, participation in the Workshop is highly recommended.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- All characters will inherit characteristics and themes from a particular storybook character.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- The essence doesn't necessarily have to match the character, just make sure you pick one that you can work with.
- Refer to the Abilities section to see how abilities work.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- For a complete refresher, refer to the Character section of the Game Info.
- We have an accompanying Test Drive and Registration is always open.
- Feel free to hop into the Discord server for help and questions.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

Velvet Crowe | Tales of Berseria
Character: Velvet Crowe
Canon: Tales of Berseria
Age: 19
Bio Blurb: Wiki. Once human, that changed when her little brother was sacrificed by her brother-in-law. Transformed by her hatred and grief into a monster, she seeks revenge on Artorius and devours others who get in her way.
Preferred Essence(s): Perhaps the role of Big Bad Wolf - either from Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs. Or Captain Hook.
Looking For: Velvet is not a great person (anymore) so I can't see her in a role as a true hero. Maybe one of those heroes who do something bad that also ends up being for the greater good. Certainly not one that involves "true love".
Appearance: Really not a lot will really change for Velvet, she'll be running around in black and red clothing in either aspect. Though as a Big Bad Wolf, she will have black ears and a black tail. She will be able to morph her left hand to look something like a werewolf's arm - claws included. As Captain Hook, she will wear a pirate-like outfit and of course a captain's hat. Her left hand will absolutely contain a hook but it won't be physically attached.
Abilities: As the Wolf from RRH, maybe she could actually fully transform into a large wolf. As the Wolf from TLP, the ability to blow certain types of houses over. idk. In either essence she'd have some heightened senses such as hearing, smell and sight. Also strength, speed and agility. None of these would be to the extreme but more of a slight boost than average people.
As Captain Hook, she'd have her sword and general fighting abilities - though that's pretty much normal so - either the power to "summon" pirates to her side or maybe a crocodile...
that constantly wants to eat her. And I feel like she'd need the SHIP.Quirks: As RRH Wolf, she'd tend to find people pretty delicious. (Which is kind of canon, let's be honest.) As TLP Wolf, trying to trick poor animals or even people to let her in their house. Both Wolves would be hungry a lot. As Captain Hook, a fear of crocodiles along with a dislike for ticking clocks and flying, unaging boys.
Extra: It's time to throw a baddie into the works and I'm here to provide. But also to get her to make some friends or people she can tolerate, at least.
Questions: Nah. Bring it on.

Shouto Todoroki | MHA + some maybes
Character: Shouto Todoroki
Canon: Probably end of season 3 of the anime, maybe after his dinner with Endeavor (which is atm manga-only but)
Age: 15 (almost 16)
Bio Blurb: Wiki. TLDR, his dad is asshole with fire powers who married a woman with ice powers specifically to get a child with both to cancel out his issue with overheating. Shouto is the final result.
Preferred Essence(s): There's a couple of options here and honestly I'm not quite sure. Possibly Gerda or Kai from The Snow Queen. Princess Kaguya or Cinderella might be interesting. "Distant ice queens in need of friends" or "wow my parent is a jerk" is not exactly an uncommon story element so I'm just sitting here staring at these lists XD
Looking For: The boy needs friends. The boy is not good at making friends on his own, but the boy needs friends.
Appearance: Honestly nothing will really change with any of the options I've listed, except maybe getting a little glowy if I go with Kaguya.
Abilities: If I go with Kaguya, probably some sort of flying or hovering thing? Cinderella might have some nifty glass-related powers or some disguise ability? If I went with Kai, maybe he can snow-write. I don't have much of an idea for Gerda, except Stamina of the Gods because seriously girl. I'd have to be careful whichever I chose, since he's already stated to be kinda OP in canon and I do not want to exacerbate that.
Quirks: Kaguya might make him a little more airheaded (because moon people and I think I'm funny). Cindy just makes him super tidy and slightly obsessed with shoes. Nothing really would change for Gerda or Kai since he's already kind of distant (Kai) but stupidly loyal to his friends (Gerda).
Extra: I have two other possibilities, though I don't think either of them are quite as ready to go as Shouto is. One is Oscar Pine (thinking Wizard from the Oz books if that's allowed given his canon, Aladdin if it's not) or Eizen from Tales of Berseria (probably the Beast from Beauty and the Beast if only because I am not mean enough to use a dragon XD). I haven't watched V6 of RWBY yet and I need to replay Bers, but those are other options I'm sort of considering.
Questions: Nah

Mirai Kuriyama | Beyond the Boundary
Character: Mirai Kuriyama
Canon: Beyond the Boundary; Episode 12: so technically she's dead
Age: 15
Bio Blurb: Wiki. A girl who has the ability to manipulate her blood into the form of a blade (and a few other tricks), who is considered cursed by other Spirit World Warriors and is hated/feared by them. She loves bonsai trees and food, but spends some time afraid to hunt the monsters of her world. A bit shy and rather clumsy, often using the phrase "how unpleasant" to describe rude people.
Preferred Essence(s): Thumbelina is a first thought that comes to mind as she sort of goes on a journey and encounters danger, while also finding love. Then Sleeping Beauty as Mirai has a tiny pinprick on her hand where her blood sword forms from and is separated from the person she loves by "death".
Looking For: idk, I really had a hard time thinking of a storybook character for her. I did also think of the Little Match Girl and even Odette from Swan Lake as they have tragic endings and Mirai does sort of have a death scene... even if she comes back in the movie. Tinkerbell and the Ugly Duckling is also an option. I'm not adverse to throwing her into a male role like the prince from Sleeping Beauty.
Appearance: Technically Mirai is already really short but as Thumbelina, I feel she'd NOT be as tall as a thumb constantly but would have that ability. Instead I'll give her fairy wings. Otherwise not really much of a change in appearance for the most part. Both would wear rather plain-looking peasant clothes, perhaps in pink.
Abilities:
Thumbelina, she would have the ability to shrink down to the size of a thumb and would be able to fly with fairy wings. The ability to accidentally attract male affection. A green thumb with plants in general.
Sleeping Beauty, beauty, wit,
grace(haha, she'll still be pretty clumsy), dance, song(except sorry but she has a horrible voice) and goodness. The ability to fall asleep anywhere. Maybe the ability to summon thorny plants for protection. And I'd want to keep her ability to form the blood sword.Just for fun, I'm gonna throw in Sleeping Beauty Prince. Swordsmanship and "true love's kiss" - aka waking sleeping "princesses" with a kiss. She'd be able to summon a weapon, perhaps the blood sword as a sort of call to the whole Sleeping Beauty finger-prick thing. Good reflexes, agility and strength in battle - though still fairly average (someone help her).
Quirks: As Thumbelina, she'd accidentally draw the eye of males - especially in town and maybe have to avoid getting kidnapped. Sleeping Beauty, Mirai would be drawn to spinning wheels and want to touch them all of the time. Deep sleeper even on normal nights. Sleeping Beauty Prince would be the white knight quirk - swooping in on a horse to save people in trouble, ready to even take on dragons.
Extra: Mirai is the only other girl I'd want to bring her but I have a few males I could do too. One being Mikaela Hyakuya from Owari no Seraph, or Nico di Angelo from the Riordan Chronicles. Though I have no ideas for either of them.
Questions: idk, I could always just throw an OC at the game. Also gonna say that now that I've done this for Mirai, I'm kinda leaning towards Sleeping Beauty Prince...

Miyamoto Musashi | Fate/Grand Order
Character: Miyamoto Musashi
Canon: Fate/Grand Order, right after her trial quest
Age: 20
Bio Blurb: Wiki. A version of the historical Miyamoto Musashi that was born female instead of male. Her timeline no longer exists, but she was spared during it's deletion and just bounces from timeline to timeline. Dual-wielding samurai, carries four katanas. Laid-back and just Here To Have Fun, wants to try every timeline's udon and fight strong opponents while perfecting her fighting style. Has a special ability known as the Heavenly Eye, which can make certain sword strikes she makes "inevitable" if she's decided she wants to strike in a specific way.
only will be used in non-PC situations if it's even bothered to be kept at all, no worriesPreferred Essence(s): God I honestly don't know. I'm considering Gulliver from Gulliver's Travels, but I'm not quite sure how to make it work in terms of abilities. Issun-boshi from The Inch-High Samurai is another idea I've got.
Looking For: Trying to think of tales that focus on travel, magical swordplay, or maybe tales involving freakishly good luck in reference to her
cheating nonsenseeye ability. She also falls for others easily, but I'm trying to avoid a princess-y role. It's honestly been very long since I last looked at fairy tales and my scope of them is more limited than I first realized.Appearance: Nothing super notable, but if I do go with Gulliver, then her samurai-esque outfit will be changed to an outfit more fitting for a traveler from 1700s England. For Issun-boshi, she'll keep her usual outfit but will not be 3 cm tall at all times, so no real change there.
Abilities: She'll still fight with her dual-katanas as she normally does canonically, but her Heavenly Eye ability will be removed unless an Essence with some kind of crazy good luck ability is what she ends up with. As for in-game specific things ... Gulliver didn't exactly have any sort of magical abilities, he just bumbled into crazy lands and got in trouble a lot before going home. Issun-boshi has the magic mallet, which can be used to change her height from her normal size (167 cm) to 3cm and back again, as well as create other basic objects with it, like food or small treasures she can sell for money. In the case of Issun-boshi, her Heavenly Eye ability will be removed, while for Gulliver it'll apply to situations to "send her home/to a safe place" instead of her sword strikes, which would make it easier for her to escape crazy situations her bad luck foists on her. ... But that might be a bit OP in some scenarios, so hrm.
Quirks: Maybe if it's Gulliver, she'll have bizarrely bad luck around her (getting accused of things constantly, trouble just kind of springing up around her, etc) that she always somehow gets out of anyway. For Issun, she'll have to try harder than normal to get other people's attention if she doesn't already have it, whether she's tiny or not at the time. Open to other ideas though!
Extra: Not much to say, but since Musashi is from Fate and that whole franchise can be a nightmarish spinning hellpit, I'm totally fine with clarifying anything that might need clarification. As far as Musashi herself goes, as long as she has food, booze, and strong opponents to fight, she'll be totally okay with whatever she gets thrown at. After typing everything out though, I'm leaning heavily toward Issun-boshi.
Questions: Nnnnnnot that I can think of offhand, no.

Frog | Chrono Trigger
Player: Toasty |
Character: Frog / Glenn
Canon: Chrono Trigger
Age: I say 30ish though there is conflicting information from various sources |D
Bio Blurb: From Chrono Compendium A squire to his childhood friend Cyrus, Glenn was a soft-hearted boy who initially refused to take up a sword or even fight back against his bullies for fear of hurting them. As they grew, the two of them found themselves facing a dark wizard, Magus. Cyrus was murdered during the battle and Glenn was turned into an anthropomorphic frog. Supposedly, the curse couldn't be broken unless Magus died. Harbouring guilt for what had happened to his close friend, Frog initially upheld Cyrus' promise to protect their Queen, eventually discovered he was the true wielder of a legendary sword and faced Magus once again to avenge the fallen knight.
...and other stuff about time travelling shenanigans and an alien world-destroying parasite. :D
Preferred Essence(s): Frog Prince or the Frog Fairy from 'The Frog and the Lion Fairy'
The Frog Prince is the standard go-to for him with the whole 'kiss the frog to undo the curse' solution to his problem, though I would probably have it so that it only works for so long before wearing off or something. Assuming anyone would kiss him anyway. :P Of course there's also the original story option of him getting slammed up against a wall and killed because that's a cool way out of your promises right? :D b
The Frog Fairy was just a different and amusing idea, considering in the story she has a possibly sentient magical cap of roses that can summon all sorts of things (thousands of frogs, a baby, magical fairy animals, a green horse with three heads and twelve feet, and by its side a sword eighteen yards long?!) Though obviously this would have to have some kind of restriction on it and I'm not sure exactly how it would work. XD
Looking For: Ideally something related to some kind of transformation curse because I like to explore that issue with Frog! I was trying to find something that would make him a froggy more often than not though since that's the more familiar iteration of his character. There are also obviously a ton of hero/knight characters that could potentially be used, though I haven't looked into that side so much. Gimme all your ideas!
Appearance: He probably wouldn't change much outside of clothing.
maybe a little frog prince crownAbilities: He'd still be good with a sword but won't have the Masamune anymore. Depending on the essence I thought maybe he could regain an item to get his water magic back? Maybe the princess' golden ball in the Frog Prince story, or that magical rose cap?
Quirks: I haven't thought much about this yet! |D
Extra:
His speech pattern is different in the DS version but I tend to go with Ted Woolsey's version because I'm nostalgic for it. Frog uses some Ye Olde English, human Glenn speaks more normally.
Questions: Not at the moment!

Prince Lotor | Voltron: Legendary Defender
Character: Prince Lotor
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender, coming from shortly after he gets his cat, Kova.
Age: This is the kid version. Although he is probably hundreds of years old, because his development has been incredibly slowed down, he is still physically and mentally a child.
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.) Child raised in toxic (figuratively and literally environment) who nonetheless has managed to maintain some good character traits. Also, he likes cats and will be bringing his cat along. This is a very cat-themed comment.
Preferred Essence(s): The Boy Who Drew Cats is my top choice so far. And in keeping with the cat theme, possibly Puss in Boots? Or, for my non-cat choice, Reynard the Fox.
Looking For: Considering his parentage, I may also want to do something related to dragons, elves, warriors, or royalty. I'm definitely looking for other ideas that might work for him as well.
Appearance: I don't know if his appearance would change much, but I could give him cat ears and a tail. Because, cats.
Abilities: He naturally has strength, speed, and endurance that are much greater than the average human's. The obvious extra ability for the Boy Who Drew Cats would be the ability to paint cats and have them come to life and do his bidding. He would also be very good at drawing in general, but only the cats could come to life. All kinds of cats: housecats, cheetahs, lions, etc. At some point they will return to drawing form, however.
Puss in Boots could have catlike reflexes, the ability to always land on his feet, and a boost in physical power and mental faculties when he is using his powers to help someone else, instead of for himself. Possibly also the ability to turn into a cat. I assume some sweet boots would also be involved.
As for Reynard the Fox, maybe a mental ability for trickery, to cloud others' perceptions (though this would only be done with permission, of course). Possibly also the ability to turn into a fox.
Quirks: If I go with the Boy Who Drew Cats, it would probably be... the impulse to draw a lot of cats. This way he would find out about his new power relatively quickly. As for the other two, some kind of animal behavior.
Extra: Although I do really like the Boy Who Drew Cats as an essence, I am still open to other essence ideas, or ideas regarding abilities and quirks.
Questions: None that I can think of right now.

Korwa | Granblue Fantasy
Character: Korwa
Canon: Granblue Fantasy, post fate episodes.
Age: 26
Bio Blurb: Wiki. An Erune fashion designer who enjoys people watching and ensuring everyone reaches their happily ever after in life. One of the most outspoken people on an entire ship of Skyfarers when it comes to relationships and chasing opportunities. Uses magical thread in her creations and fighting to attack, being able to manipulate emotions and provide buffs to allies by stitching up their clothing.
Preferred Essence(s): I was thinking for something clothing related so maybe some combo of the spinners from The Three Spinners, the girl from Spindle, Shuttle and Needle or the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella.
Looking For: Anything that plays well with her love of fashion and happy endings. Though if there's a good villain role that might fit her that would be fun too!
no more happy endings now we go for worst endingsAppearance: If the Spinners or SSN happens then she'll start dressing in cheaper material... Which she will end up turning into something stunning anyway. Runway dress made out of potato sacks and dirty sheets, aw yeah. The Spinners might also mean one of her feet/thumbs/her bottom lip will grow larger?? Weird but okay.
As the Fairy Godmother she'll start going with lovely hooded robes which will help hide her new wrinkles whoops. Generally she will start looking much older than she is.
Abilities: Pretty sure her magic thread abilities/buffing can be kept no matter what option I go with. With the SSN and the Spinners she'll be able to churn out clothing and thread like its going out of fashion. Added bonus with the SSN is her tools coming to life, doing a better job than her and generally one-upping Korwa in every way. They might also try and pick someone up for her to reach her own happy ending because spools of thread and needles are the best wingmen.
As the Fairy Godmother her magic will get a nice boost so she can transform objects into other things, dress people up in an instant and grant little mini miracles all with the wave of her
magic wandquill. The big downside to this all being that by the stroke of midnight all her magic comes undone.Quirks: As the Spinners Korwa would. Have a desire to help people in exchange for going to their wedding and being their aunt?? Or just the urge to constantly spin thread during her down time. For SSN, maybe she finds herself singing a lot more or finding it hard to look people in the eye/blushing and getting flustered easily.
The Godmother would make her more forgetful and act more like a general old woman... Or maybe she gains a new found fascination with using pumpkins in all things?
its been a slow sundayExtra: After writing all this I really am leaning towards the Godmother now. I think. But also a villain option still sounds appealing too, more thought just went into the Godmother after pumpkins happened. Also I'm keeping her at a vague "after fate episodes" canon point so she should recognise any other GBF dudes that might show up no matter where the story is but maybe that isn't best. Its my first time playing from GBF and I am clueless hi.
Questions: If Korwa turned a pumpkin into clothing and it struck midnight, would you be stuck wearing a pumpkin. Would the pumpkin smash and leave you covered in pumpkin guts. Would this exist. (I have no real questions I'm sorry.)

Bridge Nocturne | Original Character
Character: Bridge Nocturne
Canon: Original Character
Age: 17
Bio Blurb: (No Wiki, but here's a profile for him in another game he's in.) An aspiring teenage musician living in a world of magic and trying to deal with issues from his past. Also, he's half-Siren (even though he looks like a mermaid).
Preferred Essence(s): I'm heavily considering Orpheus from Greek Mythology (which would have a bit of irony, considering).
Looking For: Something music-related. I also wouldn't mind something that might put him in a "damsel"-type role.
Appearance: How he generally looks. I also use Nathan Sharp (NateWantstoBattle) as a PB.
Abilities: As a siren, he has the ability to hypnotize people through the power of his song. He can also slightly manipulate a person's emotions based on the music he plays (fast-paced songs generate excitement, slow-paced songs generate sadness, etc.), but this can only be done while he's singing.
In the world he comes from, Sirens are able to drain someone's energy to nourish themselves, though this can only be done to someone influenced by their song. And while Bridge is also able to do this, he generally prefers not to, though he does tend to eat a substantial amount of food to replace the energy.
Because he is half-human, he generally appears human on land. When submerged in water, though, he can change to a Siren form, where he gains a fish-like tail and fins, and all his abilities are enhanced. In this Siren form, Bridge has a limited ability to manipulate water in his immediate area. He also has a different form that gives him wings, and can be done on land, but he doesn't have the ability to manipulate water in this form.
Some sirens in this world have unique sound-based abilities. For Bridge, he can detect even the faintest of sounds with sharp clarity over great distances.
Quirks: While he is already a pretty talented musician, Orpheus' essence will probably ramp up his ability to charm people with his music up to 11. I also am toying with the idea of him randomly breaking out into song on occasion.
Extra: While I'm really considering Orpheus, I am still open to suggestions. Putting him as a princess/damsel-type might be kind of fun too, or even a mermaid (which he will hate, because he insists that mermaids and Sirens are different, dangit).
Questions: Considering how Orpheus died in most stories, how would death by dismemberment work in this setting?

Eustace | Granblue Fantasy
Character: Eustace
Canon: Granblue Fantasy (
what are canon pointspost Second Advent and WMTSBIII)Age: 28
Bio Blurb: wiki (all three versions apply, but primarily Earth and Dark); Eustace is an erune who works for an organization called the Society, which serves to protect the peace of the skydoms and fight against the Foe and those of the Moon. The Foe/Moon people really don't like the skydwellers so they're deliberately causing violence and antagonizing villages to fighting and war. Eustace's homeland had been a victim of their "attacks" and he seeks revenge by working with the Society. But rather than be filled with hate, all Eustace really wants is peace and quiet, and that is why he fights. He's a quiet guy whose emotions stopped working since that day, but has begun to warm up again. He's also dedicated to his work and whatever he sets out to do, known as a loyal dog to the Society but also willing to become a stray when things within the Society go against his own personal desire to protect certain individuals. He has a cold exterior, but really has a warm heart—and loves dogs. A lot.
Preferred Essence(s): CURRENTLY looking at the Gray Wolf from The Fire Bird and the Gray Wolf by Tsarevitch Ivan, but I'm open to others.
Looking For: Anything that kind of fits his character, really. He's the lone wolf type, and I am leaning towards wolves. I'd go hunter types, but already have the Huntsman, ah ha ha. Soldier types would work well, too, and if it helps Eustace's main weapon is a gun (rifle).
Appearance: Eustace is dark skinned with two doglike ears and grayish white hair, which will carry over no matter what his essence is. If I go with the wolf, he'll gain a tail that will match his hair and ears. ...That's all I can really think of, ah ha ha...
Abilities: Weapon wise, Eustace is an excellent marksman and an expert with daggers/short swords. He'll have to pick up new ones since his trademark weapons can't come along
rip. For the Gray Wolf, some new abilities would be the ability to transform not only into a large wolf, but also to other people and animals. This ability I would limit to figures he's personally seen before, and how well he transforms will depend both on how well he knows them and his own skill. Which means it's going to be a bit messy at first, ah ha ha. He'll have some slight advanced hearing, sight, and sense of smell to match those of a wolf, and when transformed as the Gray Wolf he is capable of carrying others on his back and running quickly. He won't be able to run as fast as the original character, but at least faster than a horse. To compensate, his endurance is something he'll need to work with, only able to go small distances in short bursts at first before being able to go for longer distances.Quirks: Sudden craving for horse meat...... This is something he's going to hate lmao. But every time he sees a horse, he's going to have a sudden craving to hunt it down and potentially kill it. HE'LL WORK ON KEEPING THIS DOWN, he likes all animals weep, but yeah. Horse are not going to want to be around him for a while.
Extra: If you ask nicely and he's okay with you, he'll let you pet his ears. Maybe. Also like all Erunes, his sense of fashion is weird in that every piece of clothing is open at the back and sides. Why?
it's sexyNo one knows.Questions: Nope! But I'm open to any and all suggestions, especially for essences and other possible abilities.
