Yep, there's no real nice way to say this so I'll just be honest here. For a while now, my motivation for the game has been slipping and that's probably been evident from the delays and lack of activity on my end. It has been a blast to have the game up and have it last for as long as it did (close to
3 years with
7 campaigns!!), but I think there are various things that are not quite working out to keep it going.
However, as some are aware, I have cooked up another game called
Songerein. It takes a few elements from FT along with my other two previous games, a dream world called
Somarium and an emotion based one called
Empatheias, the latter of which most everyone knows as they once played there. I have managed to connect the lore between FT and the new game so that while we lose the Essences, we do keep the fairy tale theme and have a similar concept of going into fairy tales and participating in them in some way. It also allows CRAU with FT characters having greater priority, and there are also ways to mimic a character's Essence in certain scenarios.
So after all that vague prelude,
what exactly is the game? Songerein is basically a
dream world where characters enter and are able to watch and enter other people's dreams. They have their canon abilities, but they will also be able to develop new ones based on the game's native energy mechanic,
dreamotion energy. There's no big plot to the game, but the general "purpose," is for characters to enter large dreamscapes designed after fairy tales (or even canon worlds), try to not disturb it as they participate in it (similar to our campaigns), and bring back a portion of the dreamscape setting to build onto Songerein. So for example if we had a dreamscape set in Hansel and Gretel, we could have a street filled with gingerbread houses; Cinderella could have pumpkin carriages and castles; Little Mermaid would get us an ocean (or at least a sea) with underwater habitats. Similar concept with dreamscapes based on canon worlds. We'll definitely visit some of the stories we had in mind for future campaigns so nothing is completely lost.
It
will be a more
public game, and while the size is still the same (hard cap at 75 players), there is a more stringent AC (2 threads of 5 comments each) and an actual application process. Aside from that, however, it is meant to be more relaxed, and if we end up with a smaller number then I can relax some of the standards and turn it more into a sandbox game more similar to FT. What will make it very different and easier to maintain is that the events will only last
1 month with a 1 month break in-between. This will be less intensive than our 3 month campaigns.
How does all this affect FT characters? Leaving aside the "how they get there" for the section below, this is what will happen for those who choose to continue to the new game:
- If the character is being CRAU'ed with FT history, then all memories will be intact.
- Essence abilities are lost and canon abilities are regained, however when characters are in dreams they will have the option to take on forms similar to what they had with their Essences and use similar powers within dreams. It will not be fueled by their Essence, instead it will be based on memory and imagination.
- Characters will automatically have whatever is on their person, including weapons, and one extra item from FT. They will be able to regain any other items from FT after big events.
- All contact with the Story Realm and the Storyteller is lost, but FT characters will have something of an advantage in understanding what to do in the big dreamscape events.
As a bonus, I do plan on having the
Story Eater appear in the new game so that the characters can finally deal with it once and for all.
For more complete information about the game, I have the
Game Info written up that everyone can look over. However you're more than welcome to ask questions here, especially in regards to how this will affect your character.
There is currently no opening date set but I am looking sometime between August and September. Yeah, short notice I realize but I only thought of this within the past week and in my experience, doing this fast is better than dragging it out.
§ how the games will connectBecause there is a direct connection between the two games, I have two ways we can end the game to lead it into the new one, and it all depends on player interest and participation. So I will need feedback on preferences!
- Finale event. So that we can have some kind of closure, we can host an event based on a story involving dreams, such as Peter Pan or something else. Whether it's an actual dream or just themed has yet to be decided (I know we had dream events before, but that was last year so we could try to do something else with it). In the middle of it, Story Eater comes and wrecks things, making a giant tear and sending the characters into the dream world. The Storyteller will have to seal up the tear, but now the characters are in the new dream world instead of the Story Realm. The
- Blame Story Eater. More simplified version of above where it's just Story Eater comes without any event and that's it. Pretty forced but easy.
In either case, the Storyteller will be able to transmit one last missive to the characters about what happened and give them reassurance. By this time, enough story worlds have been restored and the Storyteller will have amassed enough power to start rewriting stories on their own. Whenever the first event happens, the Storyteller will also be able to briefly inform everyone that helping with the dreamscapes based on stories will help keep things stable in the Story Realm. This way FTCRAU characters will feel like they're continuing the mission.
Of course, if we don't get
any FTCRAUs in the game then some of this will be cut as it won't be as necessary.
As mentioned I would like feedback on what option players would prefer and I am also open for suggestions.
§ end notes
I realize this is very sudden and I know some players were making plans for the future, but without going into too much more detail, this is the best option. I will be happy to leave the communities open for players to still use the game as a sandbox, but it will be otherwise closed.
