GAME NOTES #43: July 5th, 2021—

All right everyone, as we announced earlier we will be closing Forgotten Tales and continuing onto a new game, Songerein. Again we apologize for the suddenness, but we thank everyone who has been with us so far and will continue to be with us in the new game!

However, we still have a month left! The official end date will be July 31st, but the comms will remain open for those who wish to use it. We will have one big finale event that will help transition the characters into the new game, so read below for the details!

§ schedule

Here is our current schedule:

MAIN SCHEDULE
7/17: Finale Event
7/31: Game closes

Since the game is closing there is no new Commission Board and the rewards for this campaign will be listed below with further information. We will have another set of Game Notes closer to end game. There is no story check.

GAME NOTES #42: June 28, 2021—

We still have a week left of the campaign to go but we have a very sudden, important announcement to tell everyone that will affect everyone in the game.

§ the game will be closing and integrated into a new game

Yep, there's no real nice way to say this so I'll just be honest here. For a while now, my motivation for the game has been slipping and that's probably been evident from the delays and lack of activity on my end. It has been a blast to have the game up and have it last for as long as it did (close to 3 years with 7 campaigns!!), but I think there are various things that are not quite working out to keep it going.

However, as some are aware, I have cooked up another game called Songerein. It takes a few elements from FT along with my other two previous games, a dream world called Somarium and an emotion based one called Empatheias, the latter of which most everyone knows as they once played there. I have managed to connect the lore between FT and the new game so that while we lose the Essences, we do keep the fairy tale theme and have a similar concept of going into fairy tales and participating in them in some way. It also allows CRAU with FT characters having greater priority, and there are also ways to mimic a character's Essence in certain scenarios.

So after all that vague prelude, what exactly is the game? Songerein is basically a dream world where characters enter and are able to watch and enter other people's dreams. They have their canon abilities, but they will also be able to develop new ones based on the game's native energy mechanic, dreamotion energy. There's no big plot to the game, but the general "purpose," is for characters to enter large dreamscapes designed after fairy tales (or even canon worlds), try to not disturb it as they participate in it (similar to our campaigns), and bring back a portion of the dreamscape setting to build onto Songerein. So for example if we had a dreamscape set in Hansel and Gretel, we could have a street filled with gingerbread houses; Cinderella could have pumpkin carriages and castles; Little Mermaid would get us an ocean (or at least a sea) with underwater habitats. Similar concept with dreamscapes based on canon worlds. We'll definitely visit some of the stories we had in mind for future campaigns so nothing is completely lost.

It will be a more public game, and while the size is still the same (hard cap at 75 players), there is a more stringent AC (2 threads of 5 comments each) and an actual application process. Aside from that, however, it is meant to be more relaxed, and if we end up with a smaller number then I can relax some of the standards and turn it more into a sandbox game more similar to FT. What will make it very different and easier to maintain is that the events will only last 1 month with a 1 month break in-between. This will be less intensive than our 3 month campaigns.

How does all this affect FT characters? Leaving aside the "how they get there" for the section below, this is what will happen for those who choose to continue to the new game:

  • If the character is being CRAU'ed with FT history, then all memories will be intact.
  • Essence abilities are lost and canon abilities are regained, however when characters are in dreams they will have the option to take on forms similar to what they had with their Essences and use similar powers within dreams. It will not be fueled by their Essence, instead it will be based on memory and imagination.
  • Characters will automatically have whatever is on their person, including weapons, and one extra item from FT. They will be able to regain any other items from FT after big events.
  • All contact with the Story Realm and the Storyteller is lost, but FT characters will have something of an advantage in understanding what to do in the big dreamscape events.

As a bonus, I do plan on having the Story Eater appear in the new game so that the characters can finally deal with it once and for all.

For more complete information about the game, I have the Game Info written up that everyone can look over. However you're more than welcome to ask questions here, especially in regards to how this will affect your character.

There is currently no opening date set but I am looking sometime between August and September. Yeah, short notice I realize but I only thought of this within the past week and in my experience, doing this fast is better than dragging it out.

§ how the games will connect

Because there is a direct connection between the two games, I have two ways we can end the game to lead it into the new one, and it all depends on player interest and participation. So I will need feedback on preferences!

  • Finale event. So that we can have some kind of closure, we can host an event based on a story involving dreams, such as Peter Pan or something else. Whether it's an actual dream or just themed has yet to be decided (I know we had dream events before, but that was last year so we could try to do something else with it). In the middle of it, Story Eater comes and wrecks things, making a giant tear and sending the characters into the dream world. The Storyteller will have to seal up the tear, but now the characters are in the new dream world instead of the Story Realm. The

  • Blame Story Eater. More simplified version of above where it's just Story Eater comes without any event and that's it. Pretty forced but easy.

In either case, the Storyteller will be able to transmit one last missive to the characters about what happened and give them reassurance. By this time, enough story worlds have been restored and the Storyteller will have amassed enough power to start rewriting stories on their own. Whenever the first event happens, the Storyteller will also be able to briefly inform everyone that helping with the dreamscapes based on stories will help keep things stable in the Story Realm. This way FTCRAU characters will feel like they're continuing the mission.

Of course, if we don't get any FTCRAUs in the game then some of this will be cut as it won't be as necessary.

As mentioned I would like feedback on what option players would prefer and I am also open for suggestions.

§ end notes

I realize this is very sudden and I know some players were making plans for the future, but without going into too much more detail, this is the best option. I will be happy to leave the communities open for players to still use the game as a sandbox, but it will be otherwise closed.

GAME NOTES #41: June 6th, 2021—

Act II has now come to it's conclusion as we head into the final Act!

STORY CHECK SCHEDULE

A few notes about the schedule. Public Registration will be made available sometime in July but a date has not been set yet as we would need to make a new TDM and figure out the theme for the next couple of months. Once that has been decided, we'll make a short announcement to update the schedule! The Break after this campaign will likely last from July to August, the usual two month length. This would mean the next campaign is likely to be in September, but things are subject to change.

As the campaign brings yet another transformation, here is a meme that can be used to talk about what sort of toy(s) your characters will be and what they can do! You can also use this to get some suggestions and ideas if you're undecided or stuck on what toy to go with. When posting images, make sure to credit artists and keep the pics to a reasonable size, or link if they’ll take up the whole page.

Character: Character and Essence
Toy: What sort of toy will your character be? A transformer? A wooden puppet? A doll? How little or how much toy-like features will they have?
Extra Features: Do they light up? Shoot toy missiles? Change color in water?
Looking For: Feel free to put what you're looking for here and ask the for suggestions!
Photos or Art: If you’re more of the visual type, feel free to show off references here!

Post away and have fun!

Hey, I know I didn't rp with a lot of you, but the few I did, it was a lot of fun! This is a very cool community and game. I am leaving because I just never seemed to really get the ball rolling with Fuuka, unfortunately.

I hope y'all continue to thrive!

STORY CHECK SCHEDULE
5/09: Full Check
6/06: Full Check
7/04: Full Check

This is our tentative schedule for our next campaign. Dates are subject to change, but currently each Act will have 3 full weeks with our usual one week mini break in-between. Full Checks are done between each Act and will require at least one thread of proof during the Act period. Based on this timeline, our next potential Public Registration will be either July or August, so new TDM and Workshop will go up around then, too.

Because of how the dates are working out, the next Story Check will be the one during the Mini Break. The one for April will fold into it and we will extend the proof period to include all of April. While we'll prefer to see proofs from the Act itself, we'll accept anything that was started at any time during April.

STORY CHECK: 04/01 - 04/03—

Time for our...sort of monthly weird schedule Story Check! This is just the check-in version since we're on Break.

§ story check

Be sure to comment so you're not swept! The time frame is from March 1st to March 31st, but because it's just a check-in, the time frame for commenting is a little shorter with just three days. If this is your first Check, you get a freebie pass. The Check ends on April 3rd, 11:59PM CT (sooner if everyone checks in early). No proofs required, just a general comment of "I'M HERE" will do. Newly accepted players don't have to worry about this, but you can participate if you want. Anyone who does not comment will be swept!

  1. EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: Fill out the same form with "I'M STILL HERE" or something to that effect so you don't get swept! This option is available for those who took the Break as its given opportunity to completely check out and focus on other things! So we just want to know if you're coming back.

Everyone use this form to comment!

Welcome, everyone, to our CR Meme! Everyone new and old is invited to fill out the form and make a thread discussing what they'd like to do with their characters in their time here. Feel free to comment around and plot with each other! We're in sandbox mode, so everyone is free to chill and do whatever until our next campaign.

If you have multiple characters, make a top level with your player info and make a separate comment for each character underneath.

—Player Intros: March 2021;

Hey guys, and welcome to [community profile] forgottentales's Player Introduction post for public registrations! Thanks to everyone who has joined so far, and looking forward for those who may come later.

To keep the OOC spam to a minimum, everyone can use this post to say hello and introduce themselves, and for current players to greet them, especially as public registration goes on! Be sure to include your name, what character(s) your bringing, their essences, a little about themselves, and share your contact if you'd like! To help jumpstart plotting, please include things you'd be interested in doing while in the game. We have a formal Character Intro log as well as the Commission Board with tasks that last throughout the entire Break. You are free to incorporate Board tasks into the Intro Log, or even make your own logs and use the prompts from both.

NOTE: We will be posting the CR Meme after the registration period ends Saturday, March 20, and we are also delaying the next set of Game Notes to be posted at that time. We should have dates for the next campaign then but it is currently looking to be mid-April.

We hope you enjoy your time in our little game, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask us! We also recommend joining our Discord server.

Test Drive: March 2021—

§ instructions.

Welcome to the Test Drive for Forgotten Tales! This is to help interested players test out their characters in the game's setting and see if the essence they have chosen will actually work in game play. There are a number of prompts that try to touch on the kinds of settings and scenarios the characters may encounter. So here are a few things to keep in mind while on the test drive:

  • Feel free to use the current Workshop for help if you need it! Both the Workshop and the Test Drive are required for Registration.

  • Participating on the Test Drive does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration.

  • Check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  • Include Character Name and Canon in the subject line, and note somewhere within the toplevel your character's essence. It can be in the subject line if you already know what it is (so ex; Character | Canon | Essence). Side note: You are free to try more than one essence if you're on the fence. Just make sure to note which one you're using for that particular prompt.

  • Players are free to assume their characters have been informed of the very basics so you can skip all that if you'd like.

  • All prompts of the Test Drive can be carried over into the game in their entirety and be used as intros. Should current events in the game be different while the TDM is still active, you can adjust some of the settings to better match it upon entering the game.

  • Don't forget to refer to the Game Info for how the mechanics work.

  • Public Registration is currently closed until further notice, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open at a later date.

Most of all, have fun! Feel free to invite those you may think would be interested to participate in the test drive.

Workshop #7: March 2021—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Public Registration is currently closed until further notice, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open at a later date.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

GAME NOTES #36: February 21, 2021—

STORY CHECK SCHEDULE
2/26: Story Check-in
3/29: Story Check-in

Due to needing to delay the event and the reasons for it, we've needed to adjust the schedule a bit. It's not the most ideal as everything is being pushed towards the middle of the month, but this will allow us to better prepare and give players some extra time during the Break. As it stands, the next campaign WILL occur in April, we just don't have a definitive timeframe set on whether it will be early or closer to mid-April. This is mostly due in part to Public Registration opening in the middle of March, so depending on how many registrations we get, we can either start the campaign earlier or push it later as we do want to give players time to acclimate their characters into the setting before diving into a campaign. It is possible that we push it until May, and if so it would be the very start of May. We would rather not stretch our Break to be that long, but we'll play it by ear a bit and gauge how everyone is feeling. Players are welcome to give their own input!

As for our Story Checks during Break, for a quick reminder we are only doing CHECK IN for our activity checks. Since all players need to do is comment to the post when it goes up, each Story Check-in period will be three days, so the best way to remember is comment before the month is over. REMEMBER FEBRUARY ONLY HAS 28 DAYS!!!. Anyone who does not comment will be swept. The 3-day period is only for check-ins, normal checks will be a week long.

We apologize for the delays, but things should straighten out starting March once we get our feet back under us. We appreciate everyone's understanding!
