Game Notes #39: April 10, 2021

GAME NOTES #39: April 10, 2021—

All right everyone, it's almost time for our next campaign! Did you guess what the two stories involved are~?

§ schedule

Here is our current schedule:

MAIN SCHEDULE
4/17: Campaign begins; Act I
5/09: MINI BREAK
5/15: Act 2 begins
6/06: MINI BREAK
6/12: Act 3 begins
7/04: Campaign ends, Break begins
MOD NOTES SCHEDULE
5/09: Game Notes #40
6/06: Game Notes #41
7/04: Game Notes #42
STORY CHECK SCHEDULE
5/09: Full Check
6/06: Full Check
7/04: Full Check

This is our tentative schedule for our next campaign. Dates are subject to change, but currently each Act will have 3 full weeks with our usual one week mini break in-between. Full Checks are done between each Act and will require at least one thread of proof during the Act period. Based on this timeline, our next potential Public Registration will be either July or August, so new TDM and Workshop will go up around then, too.

Because of how the dates are working out, the next Story Check will be the one during the Mini Break. The one for April will fold into it and we will extend the proof period to include all of April. While we'll prefer to see proofs from the Act itself, we'll accept anything that was started at any time during April.

§ sugar plum beast campaign + act i details

We know many guessed Beauty and the Beast as one of the stories involved in the campaign, but did you guess The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, more commonly known as The Nutcracker Prince? These are the two stories featured in our upcoming campaign, and while it has a similar "transform into angry persona" gimmick, compared to Frankenhyde it's a lot more cheerful and has more of a romantic slant to it. Or, well, it's supposed to, but we all know how these stories end up. Who knows, maybe we can make a crazy love diagram out of this~

Now for the Act I details. As mentioned in our Schedule section, each Act is 3 weeks with a 1 week mini break in-between. Compared to Frankenhyde we do not plan to have as many scenes as before, or at least not as many heavy ones.

Setting. The setting for this act is in the quaint, lovely town of Amande and everyone will fit the setting dressed as rustic townfolk. Like all Drafts, things are a bit dreary looking with the muted colors, quiet sounds, and overgrown plants, but overall it seems to be in better shape compared to others. A little pruning, good cheer, and festive merrymaking will liven the town very quickly. Singing the flowers may also bolster their growth and bring more color into everything. The real danger lurks outside the town where a dark ominous forest looms. This is where Erasers, hostile creatures, and murderous toys lurk and sometimes try to sneak into town.

Main Scenes. We have 5 main scenes but the first scene is a 3-parter so technically it's 7.

NOTE FOR BEAST ROLES: Those who are cast as Beast will undergo full transformation, though the degree of transformation is up to the players. They can go into full hulking beast or be something more benign and cute with just ears and a tail or something. The Beast form also can be whatever you want, there is no set "design." In terms of affected personality, in general those in the role will be a little angrier and grumpy than usual, but it's not a complete personality switch. So it's possible to have the character mostly unaffected but snap or get annoyed more easily than usual or over the most random things they normally wouldn't. However there are cases when they may fly off the handle and while we leave it up to the players on if and when that can happen during a scene, anything more extreme that is specifically required will be noted for that scene (ex, 1B).

  • Scene 1A: Mouse King and Prince. In the not so distant past, the fairies held a special competition for those with exceptional skills to produce the most beautiful miniature garden. The winner would be granted one special wish as long as it was within their powers. Among the contestants were a powerful Mouse King and a Prince who had a rivalry between them that has lasted longer than anyone can remember. While acting as their roles and keeping a competitive spirit (insults are allowed), Aspects must cultivate their own little garden. The Mouse King's must be made out of an assortment of cheeses and the Prince must use tiny miniature toys.

  • Scene 1B: Mouse King and Prince. Beaten by the Prince, the Mouse King's jealousy results in an elaborate curse on the Prince to get him out of the way. The Prince is now a beast, the servants are toys, and the castle is enchanted to be unrecognizable. For this scene, Aspects must work together to find the curse the Mouse King is supposed to cast on the Prince, which will turn the one in the Prince role into a Beast form of themselves. After enacting the scene they must deal with the fallout of the curse's initial casting—chiefly dealing with the screaming toy servants running amok and potentially risking harm and danger to themselves as well as the Beast's initial wild frenzy.

  • Scene 1C: Sugar Plum Fairy and Beast. After the Mouse King leaves and the former Prince now Beast is in anguish, the Sugar Plum Fairy appears to try and help. However because of the nature of the curse, she creates a counter spell that must be completed by doing a certain action. Players can decide between a kiss, finding three objects of their choosing, or going east of the sun and west of the moon (a designated location we'll provide). The one in the Beast role will be transformed upon entry and the Sugar Plum Fairy will likely need to try and calm them down.

  • Scene 2: Drosselmeyer and Clarabelle. The genius toy maker Drosselmeyer is telling his daughter Clarabelle a bedtime story and afterwards gives her a special birthday gift: a music box. Unfortunately, it malfunctions. For this scene, Aspects will need to first tell a bedtime story of their own making and then deal with the malfunctioning music box.

  • Scene 3: Beast and Drosselmeyer. Drosselmeyer is on his way into town to get repair parts fo the music box when he gets lost and stumbles into the cursed castle. There he finds a rose music box, and as if drawn to it he takes it. At that moment the Beast appears and grabs him. For the scene, Aspects will be helping each other to get to the castle and battle the hostile animals that will appear. The one cast into the Beast role will initially be their normal self, but the moment the one cast as Drosselmeyer touches the music box, they will transform into a Beast version of themselves and become aggressive. The Beast will let Drosselmeyer go but only after demanding something as a token of apology. Both Aspects will be informed of the transformation and behavior so it won't come as a complete surprise.

  • Scene 4: Drosselmeyer and Clarabelle. After Drosselmeyer tells Clarabelle the harrowing story, she decides to go up to the Beast and give him what's for—or some other solution or answer to the problem. Despite his attempts to stop her—or maybe he forcibly drags her there—the two head to the castle. For some reason, the forests seem darker and dangerous than usual… Together the Aspects must trek through the creepy forest and fend off threats such as wolves, overgrown thorns, and as they get closer, creepy dolls. Once Clarabelle steps through the gates, they will close, cutting the two apart. After a heartfelt (or not) parting, the scene will end.

  • Scene 5: Clarabelle and Beast. Clarabelle ventures into the castle and encounters the Beast. She states her terms to take her father's place and the Beast accepts. Or she might try to fight or negotiate something, who knows. The Beast might even take pity or just be a stone, cold hearted, well, beast. Afterwards the Beast gives her a brief tour of the castle which is really looking more like some kind of giant toy factory. He leads her to a room filled with toy baby dolls and the two somehow end up needing to take care of it, posing as parents. Good luck with that.

Sub quests. It's a rather peaceful town, and everyone is dressed to fit the "old country villager" style, but there are still a few things that need to be taken care of.

  • Toy repair. Scattered around the roads and around the boundaries of the town are damaged sometimes broken toys. They vary in size and shape, but for some reason their expressions are one of fear and pain. Take the toys back to Drosselmeyer's workshop and try to repair them. Even a fresh coat of paint will make the toys seem happier and relieved. Who knows maybe this good act will be returned later…

  • Toysitters. Some of the toys brought into the workshop are on the young, baby side, and boy are they needy. Constantly crying "Mama! Papa! Poopy!" one would easily think they're just malfunctioning. Though that's strange, does this kind of setting have the technology for these toys to have voice recordings...? Regardless, better pair up with someone and try to soothe these baby dolls before the locals come in wondering what kind of witchcraft is going on in there.

  • Garden birthday party. There is a birthday party being thrown and everyone is invited to either help decorate or just chill and enjoy the food. However, the garden it's held in needs some pruning. You know those plastic joke flowers that squirt water at people? They're blooming all over the place and are dousing anyone who gets near them. Either weed them out or figure out a way to lessen their water output! And of course there are Eraser and hostile toy blot problems that need to be taken care of. The further out towards the boundaries of the town, the more dangerous it is.

  • Easter egg hunt. Similar to a scavenger hunt, toy eggs have been scattered all over town and all the children are having fun trying to find as many eggs as they can. Perhaps the Aspects want to join in either hiding or finding eggs. However, some of these eggs are actually not toys but rotten, or if they are toys, terrible pranks like a pie to the face or a small firecracker exploding happen once opened. Some of the children are upset, even hurt, so it's imperative to find the culprit! Witnesses say they saw a strange, yellow polka dotted Velveteen rabbit hopping around the areas where the prank eggs are found.

And final reminder that time is ambiguous so we don't need something to finish before we move onto the next. That's part of the pre-planning!

§ cast sign-up

Here are the list of roles for this Act:

Mouse King: Scenes #1A, 1B
Prince/Beast: Scenes #1A, 1B, 1C, 3, 5
Sugar Plum Fairy: Scenes #1C
Drosselmeyer: Scenes #2, 3, 4
Clarabelle: Scenes #2, 4, 5

Sign-up threads are organized per scene and will be frozen once filled. Sign-ups are a first come first serve, but we do ask everyone to include a second preference just in case people need to be switched around. To keep things fair, we'd like everyone to follow these instructions:

  • One role, one character. Please sign up for one role first and then double up if slots are still open by the end of the sign-up. This applies to players with multiple characters as well. Pick one first and then wait a day or two before signing up with your other characters to allow other players a chance.
  • We ask for back-up volunteers in case something happens and someone needs to be replaced.
  • Please only sign up if you will be able to tag consistently and often enough to progress the threads in a reasonable and substantive manner.

To reiterate, we have more players and characters than we do roles, so we want to have as many players participate as possible during the campaign as a whole. Hence some of the stricter requirements to ensure a larger spread. Of course, after the designated time period it's a free-for-all and players can sign double up and fill in as they'd like or as necessary.

Sign-ups will last until Friday, April 16th and we'll give final calls on Thursday if necessary.

§ end notes

And that's all for now! If you have any questions, feel free to comment to the designated thread.
