§ story check

The story checks are not only to help gauge player activity, but it's also to help the mods gather information and progress for the current campaign. If this is your first Check, you get a freebie pass. For this half point story check, all players must submit proofs with the following requirements by Friday, May 14th 11:59PM CST:

  1. IF YOU ARE PART OF A MAIN SCENE: a link to your thread(s) with a short blurb about what's happening will be enough for the check. You don't have to provide anything additional. If you signed up for multiple, please link all scenes you were cast a major role in. Comment length doesn't matter, but continue plugging away.

  2. ONE PROOF OR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: a link to one thread or entry dated between April 4th and May 14th (comment length does not matter), and a small blurb describing your character's progress. If you don't have a link, then a quick "I'm still here" will do. However, you can only do this once per campaign! So if you already used it in the previous check, you can't use it again and will be swept.

Those who were on Hiatus during the Act are of course exempt!

And that's it! Just give us a thread of activity, a short blurb of what your character has been doing, and you're good to go. Feel free to throw in anything you think is noteworthy to the campaign. If you have any questions, ask them in the designated Story Check subthread.

§ act i summary

Act I is complete and so far no one has died! That's a plus— And now, the story thus far...

The Mouse King (Makoto) and the Prince (Nino) enter into a faerie contest to make the most beautiful miniature garden, continuing their long and storied rivalry. The Prince wins, which the Mouse King claims doesn't really count since the Prince is obviously privileged and everything comes easy to him.

Finally fed up with his rival, the Mouse King (Ren) tracks down a spell to turn the Prince (Crane) into a Beast. After casting the spell, the Mouse King flees the castle as the transformation takes hold of the building and everyone in it.

The Sugar Plum Fairy (Weiss) hears about the curse and flies over to the Beast (Dojima) to try and help the situation. The Beast is extremely cranky and belligerent during all of this, as to be expected, but the Sugar Plum Fairy gently helps him calm down. After discussing it, the Fairy realizes the best way to break this sort of curse would be a kiss from someone who loves the Beast in spite of his appearance (and crankiness, though the Beast does apologize for that).

Down in Amande, some time later, Drosselmeyer (Luca) arrives home and settles in to tell his daughter Clarabelle (Eizen) a bedtime story. Clarabelle has to help her father get back on track at several points, but that's nothing unusual and it's still a bonding moment for the pair. Afterwards, Drosselmeyer gives Clarabelle a music box only to find out that it's not working. He takes it off for repairs.

Drosselmeyer (Reaper) heads out of Amande to either replace or repair Clarabelle's music box. After running from many odd and hostile animals, he finds an abandoned castle and takes shelter from the monsters. As he wanders around, he finds a rose shaped music box in much better condition than the one he has; when he reaches for it, the owner (Soldier: 76) of this "abandoned" castle appears and demands satisfaction. Drosselmeyer agrees to become the Beast's prisoner after saying his goodbyes to Clarabelle.

Clarabelle (Anastasia) is Not Happy with that decision and demands she go in her father's place. Drosselmeyer (Archer) gives in and escorts Clarabelle to the castle. Along the way, wolves, weird thorny roadblocks, and very creepy dolls chase the two until they reach the castle, where Clarabelle bids her father farewell.

Clarabelle (Rosalia) enters the castle and finds the Beast (Akechi), who heard of her coming thanks to a crow. Upon hearing that she is good with cooking, cleaning, and repairing toys, he decides she's a fair trade and leads her off on a tour. First they stop by the dining room for dinner (a messy affair with feathers, tentacles, and soup); after dinner they find themselves in a room with an enchanted baby doll that seems to think they're its parents. Clarabelle eagerly starts to play at being a mother, but the Beast is a bit more reluctant though he does eventually at least try. It's a bit awkward, but the two do bond over their awkwardly raised child to some degree.

Seems like the Beast and Clarabelle are off to a...mostly positive start? We'll see how things go as we go along~

§ act ii details

Things are starting to progress, but how will certain relationships pan out by the end? The Beast needs a kiss from someone who loves him despite his form, but who could it be? Could it be Clarabelle? Or will she not be able to love him in the end? And what of the Mouse King? What is he up to? They better watch themselves because the Sugar Plum Fairy is keeping an eye on everything and she wants to see results!

Setting. During Act II and III, Aspects will find themselves in the grand castle-turned-toy-factory. As like most castles in previous campaigns, most of the building is accessible as well as the grounds within its territory. But beware if you venture too far out from the castle walls. Wolves, corrupted toys, and giant rats lurk around, ready to pounce and attack anyone. The castle is mostly safe, but there are a few "broken" toys that will attack indiscriminately, sometimes even their own kind. Repairing them will help bring things back in order. The various rooms in the castle are also different. Instead of grand ballrooms, there are giant workstations with assembly lines and stations for toy repair and creation. These will continue to function, but like all things will have a knack to become disrupted either by sabotage or just some mechanical mishap. Keeping things running smoothly will also help in bolstering the castle's appearance and defenses against the Mouse King's minions and Erasers that will try to enter and attack the castle.

On top of it all, the Aspects will have a toy-like form. It can be as superficial and realistic as the player wishes. If they want their character to only have their limbs look as if they are ball and metal joints, it can be just a paint job. If they want their character to actually be made of wood, they can be Pinnochio for a day. Regardless of how true to being a "toy" they are, they will feel some wear and tear as time goes on, so some maintenance is recommended. The Aspects will initially start as their original size but there will be times they will shrink down to toy size. This will come in handy as not all foes or problems are "human" sized. We've set up a Meme Post you can use to discuss what sort of toys your characters will be!

Main Scenes. We have seven main scenes and same rules regarding Beast from the previous Act applies!

  • Scene 1: Clarabelle and Toy Representative. After the first night, one of the toys whose position could be seen as something similar to a head butler takes Clarabelle on a tour of the castle. She discovers it's less of a "castle" and more of a toy factory, the other "servants" busy in various rooms creating and repairing all sorts of toys. While Clarabelle is free to roam through most of it, she is given explicit and furtive instructions to never enter the West Wing where the Beast lives. After that some problems occur in one of the toy rooms that need help clearing out. [Players can decide what kind of toy the "Toy Representative" is.]

  • Scene 2: Beast and Sugar Plum Fairy. After hearing about the mess and how Clarabelle is able to help, the Beast's opinion of the girl slowly starts to change. But still he does nothing and avoids her, which prompts the Sugar Plum Fairy to appear for a brief meeting. She berates him, reminding him of his curse and how he's missing a prime opportunity. If anything she might sound like a nagging mother… In any case, she must convince and give the Beast ideas on how to bolster his relationship with Clarabelle.

  • Scene 3: Mouse King and Traitor Toy. Meanwhile, out in the farthest outskirts of the Beast's territory, the Mouse King meets with one of the cursed toy servants who has become disgruntled and desperate to return to normal...but how desperate? The Mouse King (in disguise) will try to convince the toy to switch one of the Beast's mirrors with an enchanted one and in return he will remove the curse. Will the servant betray their master? Or rebel? And what will the Mouse King do if the servant does not follow? [Players can decide what form the Toy Traitor is and what disguise the Mouse King uses.]

  • Scene 4: Beast and Clarabelle. After getting an earful from the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Beast arranges to meet with Clarabelle to inquire on how thoughts of the castle-turned-toy-factory and as a daughter of a renowned toy maker, what could be done to improve things. Somehow or another they end up in a room with the same music box that Drosselmeyer had touched and her reason for being there. Awkward. Even more awkward if Clarabelle tells the Beast it had been for her birthday. Anyway, the music box will suddenly pop open and start playing, forcing their bodies to dance—and sing. Perhaps not the most romantic start, but perhaps it's an opportunity for the two to open up and speak their mind…? Or rather they're forced to speak their minds. It's forced honesty time—through song. Will their relationship improve? Or worsen? [Clarabelle should mention wishing to see her father again during it]

  • Scene 5: Sugar Plum Fairy and Mouse King. Of course it was the Sugar Plum Fairy who triggered the music box to play, and after smugly watching the two she flies away only to notice the Mouse King skulking about near the outskirts of the castle. Furious she zips down to berate him even worse than she did with the Beast it's not like she might have feelings for the rat or anything. Of course the Mouse King won't deal with any of it, though how he deals with the Sugar Plum Fairy is up to the players.

  • Scene 6: Beast and Clarabelle. After the strange dance and honesty hour, the Beast goes off and returns to Clarabelle with the enchanted mirror. He tells her she can check on her father through the mirror, and grateful she takes it. However, the reflection shows her father gravely injured and alone, and she wishes to go and take care of him. How the Beast feels about it will depend on the players, but the Beast will let her go on the condition she takes one of his toy servants. [Players are free to consult with those from Scene 4 to determine how the atmosphere might be like.]

  • Scene 7: Mouse King and Clarabelle. When Clarabelle returns to her home, she finds her father lying in bed and immediately rushes to him. However, something seems strange about his appearance, and after some probing it's revealed the man is not Drosselmeyer but the Mouse King. Revealing his true form, he tries to capture Clarabelle. Will he succeed? Or will Clarabelle manage to escape? [The little toy servant can be used as aid or sent off to warn the Beast. Or destroyed.]

Sub quests. As mentioned in the settings, everyone is in some kind of toy form of themselves. They are also initially their original size, however every so often someone might randomly shrink to the size of a miniature toy. How small ranges from super miniature to standard toy proportions. Fortunately this is temporary and will wear off its own, but it lasts from a few minutes to an hour. There are no other ways to return to normal, just have to wear it out. But maybe there could be things seen or found that are normally missed…?

  • Overgrown rose bushes. The roses bushes around the castle are getting a bit ornery, whipping out their thorns at anyone who tries to prune them. But they've started to overgrown the area, even climbing up the castle walls, and must be cut down before this story turns into another one. Just beware—the roses will spew out pollen that will make any who breathe it in behave...strangely. From beastly anger to docile servitude to cunning mischief to nagging at everyone—yes that's right, the pollen will make those affected behave similar to one of the characters or perhaps their Essence instead. It's not a complete personality or character change, but it's enough to make the behavior strange and will wear off after a short while.
  • Mouse Trap. Threat of spies and sabotage have led to mouse traps set around the castle. Of course these aren't your ordinary spring traps with cheese—no, it is in fact the game. And the Mouse King's minions and turncoat toys have been disabling and triggering them. It's up to the Aspects to try and reset them while not getting caught in the traps themselves! To make things more difficult, the games are not always human size—shrinking down will be necessary to get through the more complicated and sometimes vital parts of the traps.
  • Unexpected traitors. Alternatively, maybe some of that rose pollen has affected the Aspects enough to make them believe they are part of the Mouse King's court. Dressed in mouse onesies to try and "blend end," they're out sabotaging everything around the castle, including the mouse traps. They might even try to go after the treasured music box, but fortunately the music box has literal plot armor and can't be taken. Unfortunately for those who try, they'll find themselves stuck in gooey webbing made of silly string.

And final reminder that time is ambiguous so we don't need something to finish before we move onto the next. That's part of the pre-planning!

§ cast sign-up

Here are the list of roles for this Act:

Beast: Scenes #2, 4, 6
Clarabelle: Scenes #1, 4, 6, 7
Mouse King: Scenes #3, 5, 7
Sugar Plum Fairy: Scenes #2, 5
Toy Representative: Scene #1
Toy Traitor: Scene #3

Sign-up threads are organized per scene and will be frozen once filled. Sign-ups are a first come first serve, but we do ask everyone to include a second preference just in case people need to be switched around. To keep things fair, we'd like everyone to follow these instructions:

  • One role, one character. Please sign up for one role first and then double up if slots are still open by the end of the sign-up. This applies to players with multiple characters as well. Pick one first and then wait a day or two before signing up with your other characters to allow other players a chance.
  • If you signed up in the previous Act, please wait at least a day or two before signing up to allow players who have yet to participate a chance.
  • If participating again, please pick a different role than what the character had before to allow some variety.
  • We ask for back-up volunteers in case something happens and someone needs to be replaced.
  • Please only sign up if you will be able to tag consistently and often enough to progress the threads in a reasonable and substantive manner.

To reiterate, we have more players and characters than we do roles, so we want to have as many players participate as possible during the campaign as a whole. Hence some of the stricter requirements to ensure a larger spread. Of course, after the designated time period it's a free-for-all and players can sign double up and fill in as they'd like or as necessary.

Sign-ups will last until Friday, May 14 and we'll give final calls on Thursday if necessary.

§ end notes

And that's all for now! If you have any questions, feel free to comment to the post.

In the scenes, will they be toys as well (the ones not noted to be toys anyway) or be back to their normal forms (except the ones playing the beast)? Basically I'm wondering if all the scenes have them as toys or just some scenes.
