Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
- Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
- Registration will open October 1. Claims will open September 24.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Game Info page.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.
Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?
Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.
Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.
Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.
Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?
Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.
Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Gobo Fraggle | Fraggle Rock
Character: Gobo Fraggle
Canon: Fraggle Rock, post-series
Age: ....Uh. Young adult...ish...?
Bio Blurb: (Wiki)
Gobo is a Fraggle, a race of small (18-22 inch high) creatures known for their individualism, ability to pull music from anywhere, and general attitude of fun and games being the best part of life. Oh and their thirty minute work week.
In particular, Gobo himself is an explorer. He's mapped just about every inch of his homeground caverns that make up Fraggle Rock, and at the end of the series is implied to be about to embark on the same for Outer Space- the Fraggles' term for the human world.
Personality Blurb: At his heart, Gobo is a true and loyal friend, well able to support just about anyone he considers his circle- or, well, anyone honestly. He tries to see the good in most people, and rarely makes enemies. While at the start of the series he was a little unsure and uncertain of himself, by the end of it he was a stalwart, capable Fraggle. Quite frequently he was the "straight man" to his group's more insane antics, which would lead to some interesting situations.
On the other side, Gobo is also rash, foolhardy, and cocky to a fault, particularly as he gained confidence in himself. He'll often push into things without thinking, stuck on his own path even when others advise him differently; this would lead to the almost-destruction of Fraggle Rock on more than one occasion, when Gobo's Way of Doing Things upsets the natural balance. He'll always come around in the end though, even if he's got to get a knock in the head to make him see sense.
Preferred Essence(s): Right now I'm thinking about three different Essences-
Hermes: Greek god of travellers, commerce, tricksters, roads, athletes, and about a dozen other things. His aspect of travel and direction will fit for Gobo, as well as his ability to smoothly go between realms, which aligns with Gobo being one of the few Fraggles to freely go between Fraggle Rock and Outer Space. His trickster attitude also fits for Gobo, who's definitely used his intelligence to outwit people to get his way.
Terpsichore: Muse of the Dance, associated with lyres and plectrums (think guitar picks, though also applicable to any stringed instrument). To be honest this is almost entirely for the music aspect, particularly as she's said to be the mother of the Sirens. Gobo himself also plays a guitar, so the plectrum emblem fits in damn well, as well as a Fraggle's general propensity to sing and dance at the drop of a hat.
The Brave Little Tailor: See the aforementioned "trickster at large" under Hermes. This would also suit his general ability (or need) to be on top of things, and thinking ahead of other people. Or attempts thereof.
Looking For: Honestly, pretty open to anything! Associations with music, travel, or bravery are a plus.
Appearance: Gobo is... decidedly not human. He's short (about the size of a medium dog), furry, orange, and topped off by violently fuschia hair. To say nothing of the tail, or that he doesn't wear shoes or pants (...what is it with me and picking short fluffballs who don't wear pants..?).
As for changes from Essences, his whole outfit likely wouldn't shift much since he kinda dresses like an explorer anyway, though I did have a single idea of winged anklets if I picked Hermes. Which would be appropriately difficult to control at first, so people might get binged in the head by a furry thing that just slingshotted himself across the street.
Abilities: Gobo himself doesn't have many abilities, at least not active ones. Like all Fraggles he can spontaneously break into song with appropriate music generated by his surrounding itself (he can also seemingly summon his guitar just because he needs it), can share dreams with anyone so long as their heads are touching when they sleep, and has some minor inter-dimensional abilities, though this last one seems more a property of Fraggle Rock than Fraggles themselves. There's definitely something undeniably magic about them though, it's just hard to put one's finger on what.
For Essences, something music-related would be top of the heap. It's unlikely he'd weaponize it since Fraggles themselves aren't much for fighters (their last war, until the episode "Fraggle Wars" anyway- which Gobo wasn't even in -was so far back that most of the populous had forgotten what the word "war" even meant), but he'd definitely make for a good Support role. Perhaps healing through song, or bolstering others' abilities?
The ability to travel long distances in a short time would also be an interesting one to play with, perhaps even through the underearth of the Index itself. Perhaps also something involving luck or wits (this would probably be the Tailor's) in that he can get out of just about any scrap with almost supernatural ability.
Other than those, definitely open to suggestion!
Quirks: Nothing in mind here, so open for suggestion here too!
Goal: I'd like to play more with Gobo interacting with Silly Creatures (the Fraggles' word for humans, which is a compliment since Fraggles love silliness), since the series didn't go into that all that much, and neither has supplemental material. I want to expand his horizons, and have him learn about more cultures than just his, other than through the extremely biased postcards from his like-explorer uncle. Fraggle Rock, the show, was all about inter-culture relations, and I want to do more with this because MAN could that go places in an RP setting.
Extra: Have a catchy song of Gobo's because I can't think of anything else to put here

Also, definitely winged anklets! He and Della can be questionable fliers together!

And yes I love the idea of Gobo having problems getting up to be UP while using the anklets. He and Della definitely need to be disaster fliers.

For abilities, we've got the winged anklets and the healing lyre and caduceus with sleep/waking magic, and I mentioned the skeleton key property of his house key. (Or slipping through keyholes himself, since Hermes is described doing that in Homer's hymn to him.) Do like the idea of earth-phasing ability, and maybe further down the line he could flash-step or even make short-range portals. One more thing I thought of was the hat: often Hermes would disguise himself as an ordinary shepherd for tricks, so maybe the hat could give him some sort of disguise capability, either "mind tricking" people into thinking "oh, there's nothing extraordinary about this rather small, totally normal human" (most likely with player permission, or Aspects could be immune), or literally turning him into innocuous things. They might need to be the same size at first, like a cat (in the hat /BOOT!) or a Spaniel-sized dog, but I can definitely see that working. (Also something with turtles and tortoises, or livestock like sheep and goats, either talking with them or just greater empathy with them.)
Oh! Almost forgot about quirks. A greater tendency for pranks is definitely a good one, or an extra fondness for turtles, or sheep and goats. (Or craving beef once in a while /BOOT!)
