Workshop #4: September 2019

Workshop #4: September 2019—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Registration will open October 1. Claims will open September 24.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Game Info page.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

Percy Jackson l Percy Jackson & the Olympians

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-10 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Caprica | [plurk.com profile] caprican
Character: Perseus (Percy) Jackson
Canon: (and canon point) Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and I figure post Heroes of Olympus? I have yet to read past that and the Kane Chronicles and their cross over yet so haven't gotten to Magnus Chase and Apollo's stuff yet.
Age: Seventeen
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.) But basically, Percy is a demi-god, aka the son of Sally Jackson (human) and Poseidon (the God. You know the one.) He was thus raised in the US and everything seemed normal for the most part, until he turned twelve and was then whisked off to Camp Half Blood and learned the truth about who his father was and about his powers as a demi-god. At Camp, he made friends, met his future love of his life (Annabeth), and learned how to fight, how to use his powers as they met up each summer around school.

He goes on Quests to help the Gods, usually because of some Prophecy or other. Which is decidedly not without danger but Somehow he survives and makes it to reach seventeen years old in spite of all this. Somehow. He has also (thanks but No Thanks, Hera) had memory issues back home at one point, completely forgetting everything except his name and Annabeth. He basically Does Not Recommend dealing with Hera especially.

Personality Blurb: Percy is loyal, to a fault. He is brave, and one has to be with dealing with the Gods and their Prophecies and everything else that comes with being a demi-god. He can be sarcastic and witty in his comments/observations and sense of humor, and is something of a rebel in that he doesn't like being told what to do. Mostly because, well, the Quests for the Gods/Prophecies don't always go according to plan to say the least.

Percy is also not necessarily the brightest, in being kind of oblivious at times, even when the answer can be right there staring at him in the face. This seeming at odds with how perceptive he can be sometimes on occasion, but this is just how he is.

Percy has a lot of things to feel guilty about as well, which he has gotten better about somewhat since he came back from Tartarus and being faced with those that he wronged/forgot or ignored in them Cursing him down there. Which is to say that he can also be short-tempered at times, being an emotional teen and what with the whole sea thing he has going on. Because of his temper, he can be reckless and act without thinking, which is also where the loyalty comes in with him being very protective of those he cares about.

“To save a friend, you would sacrifice the world.”
–Athena to Percy about his fatal flaw, in The Titan's Curse.

This basically sums Percy up though, as his Fatal Flaw as a demi-god. He is so loyal that he is the sort that will risk the world's safety or his own if it meant saving someone he cared about. Or even a stranger, at that. He's quicker to roll with most anything at this point after all he has seen and done by now since arriving at Camp and all, too.

Preferred Essence(s): The Fish Prince.

Looking For: Open to other ideas? As long as it involves the ocean/water somehow or other.

Appearance: Black hair, sea green eyes. More toned/muscular since he has been training at Camp to learn to fight for years now. Has a tattoo on his arm from his time at the Roman Camp.

Abilities: Actually trying to list them all reminds me how many he has.....

In a nutshell though, he can create/manipulate water, breathe underwater. He has ADHD and dyslexia because demigods. He has general fighting skills because of course he has to defend himself from all sorts of monsters back home. He sometimes has prophetic dreams. He has an empathy link with his friend Grover, and has the Horus symbol to contract Carter Kane. Depending on canon point, previously also had the Curse of Achilles as well. He can communicate with sea life and horses.

Here for Forgotten Tales, I am still thinking of somehow going with the water theme given how huge it is for Percy, son of Poseidon and all. I'm thinking if I go the Fish Prince route that could extend to talking/communicating with sealife and turning into a fish/being able to breathe underwater?

Quirks: I guess the 'too trusting' thing is probably not really going to change much if anything with Percy.

Goal: I haven't actually played him outside a psl and a few times on memes so. I'm keen to try Percy? In a smaller, more relaxed setting maybe.
Extra: I might put him on the test drive when I have a better idea on this. I'm still looking things up and such at the moment really. Mostly I am figuring this out and noting that Percy will automatically flip at not having Riptide with him.
Questions: I am sure more will come to me later when I read more perhaps but none for now.

Oooooh I'd never read the Fish Prince before. That's a nice story, and this a nice power set you have in mind. You could probably also throw in a merman form for an in-between form if you wanted, either now or further down the line. In addition, maybe he could have a slingshot to replace Riptide for the time being, to represent Maya throwing pebbles at him.

I have loved mermaids since seeing The Little Mermaid with Ariel growing up so yes I would be all over a merman form for him. The slingshot is also a neat idea too!

Okay, after asking a modly:

Ryujin is a Japanese dragon god of the sea so it could play into Percy's normal abilities but could also eventually let him turn into a dragon. With time, he could even grow more powerful than in canon by creating and using tide jewels that allow him to control the tides with little effort.

For quirk: perhaps when he gets angry or upset, he has less control over his water-based abilities. Nearby water starts sloshin as if it were in the middle of a fierce storm.

Upgrade like whoa from demi-god to actual god. I mean I know Percy was offered immortality and all in canon but. Dragon though.

I could see the temper or emotional moments meaning he loses control to at least some extent though, yeah.
sofoskoritsi: (burns through Rome)

[personal profile] sofoskoritsi 2019-09-11 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he'd have to work up to godly-level in terms of powers but it would be a unique way to keep the abilities he already has. And I mean, who doesn't want to change into a dragon? It can start small like an arm changes or grows scales strong enough to stand up to a blade and then when he gets better/stronger, eventually he goes full dragon.

I mean he did make a toilet explode early into canon so it wouldn't be a terrible new quirk? But basically his mood is reflected in nearby water sources, you could even add in the good feelings.
natation: (By one)

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-11 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I figured that would be like, leveled up over time to get that majorly powerful to God status sort of thing. And lbr the scales would be good considering how often he gets into fights. Annabeth would have to be glad of that if it can help protect him?

And lol yeah that is true. The water being calm and inviting when he is happier.

Can confirm that Ryujin is on the table, although the powers might start small at first. (We let Godzilla have Amaterasu's essence, gods are definitely on the table.)

And daaang Xae has some great suggestions for starting powers, I like it!

....You know you say Amaterasu and I just. Think of Okami and how gorgeous that game was. And how much I wanted to pet her when watching my friend play it, haha. But yes. Good to know, I def have options then.

Caaaaaap

The only thing of value I have to add is imagine Percy turning into a seahorse as a weakened state if he uses too much of his powers. Totally not riffing a certain series or anything—

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-12 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Lae idek what I am doing. Blame Xae for me considering this.

But....seahorse....horses. Sea. Perfect! Somehow I would absolutely make that a Thing somehow. And not just because Hatori....no....

Making great decisions that's what 8D

And absolutely make it a thing kekekeke.

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-13 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
idk am I really. Really Lae.

But yes I am tempted. If that would be allowed when the Fish Prince has nothing to do with seahorses. It would be cute.....I do love seahorses.
rokubro: (‡ 006)

[personal profile] rokubro 2019-09-13 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You can be pretty creative and stretch pretty far when it comes to the abilities, so yes definitely doable 8D Rather than say you're restricted to just the essence, it's more like you take their theme and run with it.
natation: (By one)

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So merform for mostly human if not entirely so and fishy form because of the story and seahorse for when he is really weak. Yes okay I got this.
sofoskoritsi: (to endless death)

[personal profile] sofoskoritsi 2019-09-12 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
He gets to start out as a baby water god. How cute. Yeah, it could definitely act as a shield once he gets the hang of it and Annabeth would very much like that, plz.

So basically make sure he never gets angry, got it. Annabeth can handle that... probably.
natation: Art by <user name=viria13 site=twitter.com> (You will fail)

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-12 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
At least if he gets something similar to his powers back home it won't take him as long to adjust to. And yeah, shield is good. Annabeth Approved.

Especially if this means he has even more powerful potential depending on his essence/powers and role here. Yeah. Don't piss off the sea, guys. Bad idea. /gestures at Tartarus and all. Everything.
sofoskoritsi: (walks alone)

[personal profile] sofoskoritsi 2019-09-12 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's always nice getting something that is close to canon abilities. And if you go post-Heroes of Olympus, the dragon scale shield is a nice throw-back to his Achilles days.

Yeah, a power upgrade from demigod to actual god. And now Percy needs to live in a houseboat because obviously that's the best house for him to have with this Essence. Hopefully his emotions don't sink it...
natation: Art by <user name=viria13 site=twitter.com> (You will be)

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-12 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
It would help. But yeah, I was thinking that worked with the whole Achilles reference with him with him getting the same Curse. Fun times.

Percy would love the houseboat in getting to be so close to the ocean but also yeah. Possibly also kinda dangerous, potentially.
