Workshop #3: May 2019—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
Registration will open May 25. Claims will open May 18.

Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.

Character: Della Duck
Canon: Ducktales 17, post-"Raiders of the Doomsday Vault"
Age: Early 30s
Bio Blurb: Wiki

Della Duck is Donald Duck's twin sister, and grew up alongside her brother under the care of their Uncle Scrooge. This involved a number of adventures, and at least one attempt to hunt down Santa Clause. When Della was in her early twenties, she had three eggs waiting to hatch (Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck) - and it was at this time that Scrooge had the spaceship she'd designed built. It was going to be a gift after the boys were hatched, but Della found out about the Spear of Selene and took it for a ride. This resulted in Della getting stranded on the moon.

Thanks to weird cartoon science in the form of oxygen-providing gum, Della was able to survive in space for ten years, although she did lose a leg directly after crashing on the moon. She was able to create herself a prosthetic out of the ship's parts, and adapted to her new life - monstrous space bugs and all - while constantly trying to get home to her boys. Toward the end of the decade she spent in space, Della met moon aliens (Moonwalkers) and with their help, was able to rebuild her ship and get home. She has reunited with her family, but things have hardly been smooth sailing - Della is struggling to be a responsible mother, and her family is struggling to adjust to her being back, particularly the youngest triplet, Louie. However, she did get to take an adventure with her middle son, Dewey - not that it went entirely smoothly.

Personality Blurb:
Della is highly impulsive, prone to acting rashly without any thought whatsoever - and she also has a pretty strong degree of her brother's infamous temper. It's kind of a disastrous combination. She gets frustrated easily, but she's also ultimately buoyant - she never gives up. Her determination can also be seen in her stubbornness. While Della's not unintelligent by any means - she literally taught herself rocket science to fix the Spear - she can be oblivious and irresponsible in a way that can best be summed as "she's kind of a dumbass." She's friendly, almost aggressively so, although she's also prone to jealousy and social insecurity.

Of course, a major aspect of Della's character is that she's a mom - or, rather, that she's learning to be one. Though they're all unprepared, Della and the other Ducks are all willing to put everything into learning to be a family. Still, it's a steep learning curve. Della has no idea how to parent, really, and she's already made some big mistakes. But she honestly is trying her best. She always does.

Preferred Essence(s): Icarus of Greek Mythology. I am really into this idea, because of how well the "foolhardily flying closer to the sun and not listening to anyone about it, resulting in tragedy" thing lines up with Della's canon backstory.
Looking For: I'm open to other Essences. Characters whose impulsive or otherwise foolish behaviors caused them to bring about their own demise or misfortune. Characters who are connected to the sky/flight are a bonus, too, as Della is a pilot.

Appearance: Here is her canon appearance. If I end up going with the Icarus Essence, I like the idea of giving her wings, be those on her back or - more mythologically accurate, but less functional - attached to her arms, so to speak.

Abilities: I definitely want those wings to be functional! There aren't really any abilities for Della to lose and then regain, I wouldn't say. And if you have a suggestion for another Essence, definitely throw ability ideas my way!

Quirks: I'm thinking, because Icarus drowns in the myth, that maybe her quirk could be losing the ability to swim or otherwise stay afloat in water? But I'm very much open to suggestions - and that goes double if you have a different Essence to suggest.

Goal: I'm really into - and miss - this setting, and it just seems like Della lends herself well to the Essence system, too. I also love the idea of taking Della away from her family again, because I'm awful, but also because I think being around a new group of others will really force her to look at herself in a new light and, hopefully, grow as a person. Duck. Whatever.

Extra: Nothing comes to mind.
Questions: Nothing here, either.

WELP, I mean, can't get much more fitting than Icarus, honestly. As for other abilities... I'd suggest engineering since Icarus was the son of Daedalus and helped build the wings, but she already has that herself. Maybe something about being able to read air currents at a glance?

Ahaha, right? It just works! And ooh, I love the "reading air currents at a glance" idea!

I know, right?! Lae also suggested some weakness to heat/fire, but trying to think of something to balance it out.

Yeah it was mostly since the sun was what melted Icarus's wings, so I was thinking maybe a certain amount of high exposure or intense heat could trigger some kind of condition on Della. It doesn't necessarily have to be negative, either, maybe it could be a transformation (baby duckling) or she can't fly as well. Or perhaps it actually makes her fly higher. OR could just be contradictory and rather than it be a weakness, she can utilize the sun's heat/rays/light for some special abilities, but she just has to be careful or it could backfire spectacularly.

I'm digging the idea that it makes her fly higher, it fits the Icarus myth and also fits Della pretty well - she'd be really excited about it at first, and then just... Realize she's having trouble, you know, getting down. It's perfect.

There's a lot you could do with it, but yesss it would be pretty interesting to see. And we have a few other bird-based essences who could try to help her down LOL

Holy crap Icarus is super fitting for Della?? I definitely second this. Maybe you could give her some sort of sculpting/crafting powers as well, given how he crafted those wings from wax if memory serves him right.
