Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own. REMINDER: We are NOT a memloss or AU game! The only things that are being altered are the character's abilities and maybe gain a small personality quirk, but that's all.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
- Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
- Public Registration is closed until further notice, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread. We also have a Discord to temporarily meet current members and get further help!

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.
Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?
Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.
Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.
Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.
Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?
Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.
Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Gaston | Beauty and the Beast
Character: Gaston
Canon: Beauty and the Beast, post-death
Age: UHHH... Let's say somewhere between 25 and 30.
Bio Blurb: Wiki.
Personality Blurb: No one's the personification of a douchebag like Gaston- I mean-
At first glance, just for a split second and with one eye closed, someone might be tricked into thinking Gaston is a nice guy. Probably not, though. Beneath his impressive muscles and charming looks is an extremely rude, impatient, manipulative jerk who's abusive to the people around him. And you'd think maybe he'd have some ounce of shame, but he does not. He's a very vain, narcissistic person who believes he deserves the best. It doesn't help that nearly the entire village he lives in agrees that he's the best thing since sliced bread (on the baker's tray like always, the same old bread and rolls to seeell!~) Probably because he's been enabled and spoiled all his life, he doesn't take setbacks very well. Gaston takes his anger out on LeFou when he gets rejected by a woman, then spends a few hours sulking in his favorite chair. He flies into a murderous rage when he realizes she's in love with another man (who happens to be a beast, go figure) and rallies up a literal mob, because once the competition is eliminated, surely she'll wisen up and remember that she wants Gaston instead of a hairy man-bear-pig.
He’s very conservative, narrow-minded and chauvinistic. And have we mentioned illiterate? He's illiterate. He uses antlers in all of his decorating, wins all the spitting matches and matches wits by upending tables. He's probably the reason six eggs are so expensive in the village, too. This screwball eats them by the dozen, surely leading to egg shortages all around.
Preferred Essence(s): Bearskin is one that I think would work very well, but still open to others.
Looking For:
The irony of giving him an Essence that turns him into monster/beast/animal is fun, it's true, but it's not all I want to do with him. For that reason, I started looking at soldier-related characters, inspired by his live-action counterpart. So I did also look at things like the Tin Soldier, the Nutcracker, etc, but those seemed too narrow. Bearskin kind of has the combination of both.
Appearance:
Due to the nature of the story, he has to wear a green jacket and a bearskin as a cloak at all times. Also he gets one of those old-timey flintlock rifles, because soldier.
I'm thinking when he gets especially mad (or jealous?) he can transform into the more bear-like version of the character, with long claw-like nails and such messy hair (plus beard) that it's hard to tell he's still human underneath all that hair and filth. Or is he? Maybe he's half bear with a snout and legit bear claws, I haven't decided yet.
Abilities:
1) Beast man: As stated above, he can transform into a bear-like being, which is mostly an appearance change. It doesn't add much to his strength, because he already has plenty of that. He's also more vicious when he's in bear mode, so more prone to lashing out.
2) Cha-ching: He can retrieve some money out of the pockets of his green jacket, but only when he intends to give it to other people and only a few coins a day. He can't procure limitless coins for himself, because with that kind of power he would break the local economy within days.
Quirks:
Probably a strong urge to give money to the poor.
Goal: Someone please teach this bastard that he is, in fact, a bastard and not a hero. I'm not looking for a full redemption arc, because that would be weird for a Disney villain, but he should definitely be confronted with the fact that he is a villain.
Extra: I apologize for nothing.
Questions: None.

Jean would probably kick Gaston's butt if he went full Beast, though. Especially if Gaston can't go full beast and is instead just a guy with very long tangled hair.

How many times will they end up clashing.

LINK FIX
As an update on the Beast Man ability, since the original tale involves a progression of seven years in which Beastskin's appearance becomes worse and worse, maybe it's worthwhile to divide the Beast Man transformation into several stages too, where stage one is just 'guy with long messy hair and messy nails' and the final stage is an actual bear. I figure the angrier/out of control Gaston gets, the more bear-like he becomes.
