Workshop #6: September 2020

Workshop #6: September 2020—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own. REMINDER: We are NOT a memloss or AU game! The only things that are being altered are the character's abilities and maybe gain a small personality quirk, but that's all.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Public Registration is closed until further notice, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread. We also have a Discord to temporarily meet current members and get further help!

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

Eugene Fitzherbert | Tangled

[personal profile] smolders 2020-09-17 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Laena | [plurk.com profile] laenavesse
Character: Eugene Fitzherbert
Canon: Tangled (post-TV series but before Wedding; can be flexible for other castmates)
Age: 26
Bio Blurb: First to note is the series is based off the fairy tale "Rapunzel" and while mostly unique in its own story makes some key references. So Eugene is going to have a bit of a trip here. Originally known as the notorious thief "Flynn Rider," Eugene had a hard life growing up as an orphan, taking to theft to survive with his best friend Lance Strongbow (and a time with the Stabbington Brothers). He never would have imagined that stealing the long list princess of Corona's crown would lead him to changing his life to be the complete opposite. The wiki has nice background details for Eugene, but the quick version of the movie is he stole the crown, found Rapunzel and her really long, magical healing hair at the top of a hidden tower created by her fake mother Gothel, and after accepting to bring her to kingdom of Corona to see the floating lanterns, they go on a fun journey of self discovery that involves him dying once after cutting off Rapunzel's hair and thus cutting off her magic. But Rapunzel brings him back to life so if that's not a sign I don't know what is. After returning Rapunzel back to her royal parents and reinstating her as a princess, Eugene abandons his "Flynn Rider" alias and his thieving days to settle down to be an actual good guy and support for Rapunzel. But he pops the question of marriage a little too soon as Rapunzel wants to see the world still and isn't ready for the royal castle life just yet. Which works out since the night before Rapunzel and her handmaiden, Cassandra, discovered these strange moon rocks which caused her hair to grow back.

After the black rocks start encroaching further into the kingdom and various other events, Rapunzel sets off on a journey to discover what they are and how they are related to her and the powers she harnesses because of the Sundrop flower. Eugene will accompany her on this dangerous journey, and like her will discover his place and role by her side—as well as facing his past and learning the truth about himself. Turns out, he's actually a long lost prince himself—of the Dark kingdom that was protecting the moonstone that was the cause of the black rocks and yeah. He never really accepts his heritage as a "prince," however—hard to when he's been an orphan and a thief all his life. Nor does it change how he behaves as he always chooses to support Rapunzel.

And after many blades were crossed, betrayals forgiven, and tears both sadness and happiness shed, Eugene will once again propose to Rapunzel and she will accept. Eugene will also become Captain of the Guard with Max as his partner. Talk about drastic career changes. And that is a very, very abridged version of both the movie and TV series.

Personality Blurb: Eugene is your characteristic "charming rogue": confident, arrogant, vain, suave, quick-witted, cheerful, a social flirt. However despite how carefree he might appear, Eugene is actually quite grounded and a realist, often times making him the "straight man" (which can oftentimes result a lot of comedic and dramatic reactions) and the one to point out the fallacies or risks encountered. Although he'll take risks, he'll still be cautious about things and not be overly reckless. Having had to live as an orphan and taking to thieving, he's well experienced in the ways of the world, fully aware of how things really work as opposed to what some may hope. He prefers to believe in what he sees and can deal with his own skills rather than blindly following faith. After all, "faith" isn't going to bring food on the table or help when on the run. The only person he will put his faith in, however, is Rapunzel. And Rapunzel is someone he will stay with to devote his life and heart to, a drastic change to how in the past most of his relationships only lasted for as long as it was beneficial. Due to her influence, he stops thinking of his own needs and becomes more considerate and thoughtful of others. He's trustworthy, loyal, ready to lend a hand to friends and those who need it. But perhaps "change" isn't quite the right word because Eugene has always had a "softer," kinder side to him. But as Flynn Rider, he took on that more boisterous, roguish persona to live for himself and only himself. What Rapunzel really did was just let him see the light and to be more true to himself. So he still has that "debonair" personality, but he becomes more of an honest man. And just like anyone else, he has his own insecurities and hang ups that crop up from time to time, like what is the right choice to make and making decisions even though he knows it may end up hurting others. Although it would be a last resort, he would rather dirty his own hands than let Rapunzel or others take the fall.

Basically your traditional handsome debonair thief is now a handsome debonair knight—but with thief specs.

Preferred Essence(s): I'm mainly considering the Magic Mirror from Snow White to kind of riff on Eugene's vanity a bit. It's also a bit of a mean callback to one particular instance of mirror clones. Anyway, I thought it would be a stark difference from what he used to with the abilities I have in mind.

Looking For: I'm pretty set on Magic Mirror BUT I'M OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS! Although "thief" essences are tempting, best to stay away from those as they are too similar to his current skillset. "Prince" or "Knightly" types could work, especially the really loyal ones. Or can go for a twist and have him have a villainous essence

Appearance: A giant walking mirror. OKAY NO I'M KIDDING. In his normal form, he'll be dressed to the nines with formal suit in a silvery gray color scheme. Maybe something like this? not this There would be some accessories that have reflective surfaces.

In his mirror form, he can either transform into a giant standing mirror or a smaller hand mirror (possibly compact, too). I think I might theme it after the sash he receives, but without Corona's symbol and probably more Snow White. Maybe.

Abilities: Eugene's skill with the sword and thievery will remain as those are hard learned skills and have nothing magical or special about them. So all his natural agility and strength will remain the same, and to put it in fantasy RPG terms, he's built like a medium class thief. Strong enough to fend for himself, but he'd prefer quick bouts and finding other ways to deal with opponents, which includes just losing them entirely.

As the Magic Mirror, his weapons are mainly glass based, so glass shard daggers and blades. At first they'll be on the weaker side where they're kind of like rapiers—good for fast quick stabs but not great for prolonged fights and can break more easily than he'd like. Over time they can be reinforced to the point of being bullet proof. He can wield them by hand as well as conjure small glass shards to throw out. At first they can only either by a small blast or three small daggers, but this can increase over time. He can also create mirror shields, both physical and magical. Similar to the blades, they start off usable but weak and will increase over time, even gaining some reflective properties. Some other magical spells may involve ice. I'm basically making him more of a "light paragon" class where he has some weaponry and defensive options but leans more on the caster side than a warrior.

Some unique mirror skills would be being able to answer the age old question, "Who is the fairest of them all?" However, although Eugene might have an answer pop into his head, he won't always answer and kind of depends on his mood. Most common answers will be either Rapunzel or himself, lmfao. I might see if he can answer or reflect other things about a person, but that will obviously require player permission as to what he could figure out. Also, he can't be harmed by glass. Another cool ability I'm thinking about is his ability to traverse through mirrors. There wouldn't be a "mirror world," per se, just kind of a weird void/dimension/space that he steps through and can use mirrors and maybe other glass surfaces to pass through (similar to shadow walking). Would have limitations of course.

Quirks: Needing to check his reflection every five minutes—wait that's not a quirk. Open to suggestions!

Goal: Mostly just having another character to branch out and have fun adventuring with while also providing some straightman comedy. And he's from a Rapunzel story. Gonna be a trip.

I will take credit as a filthy enabler.

Anyway, still thinking Eugene having the urge to 'mirror' the actions of people he's face to face with would be a fun one as a quirk.

adfjkldj HE'D HATE IT I'd have to limit it somehow or this would be terrible fff. Maybe if he's getting too emotional over something? lmao getting into arguments and just mimicking the person's expressions will totally help things.
detectiveforhierophant: (Are you serious?)

[personal profile] detectiveforhierophant 2020-09-17 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes exactly. He just can't help COPYING people when they're making him mad!!
It's also telling Dojima rather deal with 3 new thieves than his ex junior partner...

Want a job in the Index Guard, Kid?

CAN'T DEAL WITH THIS /GESTURING FRANTICALLY

Sure, but also wow. Not a kid, old man.

okay but what if later Eugene could reflect a person's guilt or if they were telling a truth or lie I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT LAST PART IS MIRROR RELATED. MAYBE LOOSELY WITH THE WHOLE "REFLECTING YOUR TRUE SELF" THING—

Hey, Eugene, hey :>

Who's the fairest-

Is that answer really allowed.
smolders: (☸ 030)

I'm the Mirror, I make the rules.
foggydetective: (Oh bother)

Okay, if you're the fairest, Adachi's gonna have to murder you.

/drags hands down face I was second-guessing bringing in Rapunzel for more "logical" choices but I think I gotta go with my gut ANYWAY

I love these ideas. I think a potential quirk could be being more inclined towards honesty, even at the cost of someone's feelings? Not full-on compulsive truth, though.
smolders: (☸ 191)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-09-17 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i so didn't help you LMFAO but muwahahahaha!

Oooh honesty would be interesting. Maybe if it's something important? Alternatively pointing out if someone is lying LMFAO. ...Decisions decisions.
afterhappilyeverafter: (smile)

[personal profile] afterhappilyeverafter 2020-09-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OH I like the pointing out if someone is lying!
smolders: (☸ 189)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-09-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
...Or maybe that's more of an ability since I could start with small lies to big lies and could give some option on whether he actually blurts out "You're lying" or not LMFAO also since that could be a little infomodding sort of HMM.
afterhappilyeverafter: (hmm?)

[personal profile] afterhappilyeverafter 2020-09-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it would definitely need to be planned/discussed with players ahead of time.

[personal profile] smolders 2020-09-18 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
WOW THANKS CASS see if he ever lends his services should she ever need a mirror for. Something. !!!!! yeah that was bad

But he'll return the mocking if she does become a knight/hero type. ...Less so if you went the villain route but it sounded like you were going for knight/hero!
heartablazing: (and as you're moving backwards)

[personal profile] heartablazing 2020-09-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever she'll call you when she's got something stuck in her teeth and YOU KNOW YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO RESIST TELLING HER IF SHE DOES CHECK AND MATE

YEAH I'm leaning hero!! Currently considering going more like... tragic epic poem hero though I haven't settled on one. It just feels right for her life. Maybe Beowulf.

CURSES he'll figure out a way he will...! And fail a few times lmao.

Beowulf would be a fitting choice! Alas my knowledge in epic heroes has gone down the drain so I'd have to look them up to provide more options lmfao sob.

There's a new translation that translates this word that has no equivalent in modern English as "bro" that I've been reading that's super cool so it's been on my mind!

[personal profile] heartofalioness 2020-09-22 04:09 am (UTC)(link)

.......... HOW am I only thinking of this now?!

Okay okay but... if you and Mary wanted? Hades and Persephone for couple essences!

smolders: (☸ 023)

[personal profile] smolders 2020-09-22 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
..............omg THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING.

AND EUGENE WOULD HAVE BEEN FREAKING OUT ABOUT DEATH POWERS AND WHATEVER BUT RAPUNZEL AS PERSEPHONE AAAAHHH
heartofalioness: (Pleeeeaaaase~?)

[personal profile] heartofalioness 2020-09-22 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)

I mean, it's not too late, swung the idea by Mary a bit too, you guys can coordinate! ... Rhyme unintended.

But no, it could fit Eugene pretty well too. Not only is Hades the god of death, but he's also considered the god of everything else under the earth, including precious metals and gems (which is why Pluto is derived from the Greek word for wealthy), so you could still make his outfit sparkly. And also... black rocks would be a VERY fitting power.
