Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own. REMINDER: We are NOT a memloss or AU game! The only things that are being altered are the character's abilities and maybe gain a small personality quirk, but that's all.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
- Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
- Public Registration is closed until further notice, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread. We also have a Discord to temporarily meet current members and get further help!

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.
Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?
Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.
Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.
Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.
Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?
Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.
Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Daniel Kanegem | Original Character
Character: Daniel Kanegem
Canon: Original character
Age: 22
Bio Blurb: Daniel is, at his core, a guardian. The world he comes from is basically urban/modern fantasy, but with the addition of monsters called Chaotics that range the edges of society and kill the unawares. Among the ways the world fights back are the Sentinels, a very old class of warriors (for how long they've been around, imagine if the Knights Templar still existed today) that specifically train from a young age to take out Chaotics. Daniel is one of these, having been raised in a Sentinel town called East Hollow.
I'd like to say he has a rather ordinary life outside of his Sentinel work but he really... doesn't. Oh sure, he has friends (for those that remember Bridge, that's one of them) and plays bass in a band, but there's not much else beyond that. Because of this and some other reasons, he's started to question what he's doing, but that's a discussion for...
Personality Blurb: ...this section. But first a general understanding of who he is. Daniel is relatively quiet and introspective, often found standing sentinel
hehon the edge of some precarious precipice watching people below, Batman-style. Which he knows is a cliche and which he does on purpose, since he's got a rather mischievous side to him. He's not the one going "HOLD MY BEER" but he's certainly the one that holds the beer, or sets up the ramp leading into the lake in the first place. He's got a temper to him too, but the biggest way to push it is not to insult him but the people he loves. Insulting him will usually involve some sort of verbal, "all in the fun of it" clapback but you do NOT want to try to hurt one of his friends or family. As for Daniel and the Sentinels, well. Because of recent moves, other worldwise people he's met, and some other miscellaneous things, he's started to question how much of his personality is Daniel and how much is The Sentinel. Quiet, watching, combative, all these are Sentinel traits. He's been trying to evaluate whether this is the right path for him, and it's been making him rather mixed up, considering it's literally been his entire life up to this point. This has left him rather confused and emotional, making the whole Sentinel issue an extremely sensitive nerve.
Preferred Essence(s): Dracula
Looking For: Werewolves? Vampires? Something along those lines. Whenever I app Daniel to a game, I tend to go with one of his two main AUs- the ah, werewolf AU or the vampire AU. I thought that, given old vampire lore about being connected to werewolves (and wolf transformations in general), I'd split the difference this time. ...Noting that Daniel may yet be one of those AUs (the above bio was written without that in mind) when I DO app him in, which'll make it
"better"better in his eyes, 100%. >>I am absolutely open to other suggestions, though! Particularly ones that can go off his abilities, or other "monster" types.
Appearance: Over here
Abilities:
By default, and excluding his general fighting capability, Daniel can manipulate the wind. Many in his world have magic and he's no different. This usually manifests in using "wind blades" to fight with, though being an absolute nerd he's figured out the hallowed double jump (he solidifies a "disc" of air beneath his feet and jumps off that). He can also push people/enemies back, disrupt smog/mist, and other smaller, similar techniques. He also has an animal transformation, into a coyote.
If using Dracula, animal transformations will certainly be one of them. Likely a bat and a wolf at first, for basic terrain coverage. His strength will be boosted, and at later "levels" he may be able to drain energy from assorted enemies in.. traditional vampire style. Telepathy will come but later (though he may start with a rudimentary "can tell there's someone with a brainwave nearby" type senses), and he'll be able to summon mist/fog, varying in thickness. Later he'll be able to transform into, or disappear into, said mist. Higher "level" bites may also let him gain control, albeit brief, over enemies.
Naturally, all these powers will be better at night; daylight won't kill him, but it will weaken him. He'll also lack a shadow and a reflection, because of all those silvered mirrors around.
Quirks: Possibly constant thirst? Of course there's ways for vampires to get fed that aren't people's necks in the Index, but he'll still feel it. Might get a bit... touchier, his eyes glowing whenever his powers are at their strongest.
Either way though he'll certainly sleep like the dead.
Goal: Mostly Daniel figuring out who he is and who he wants to be, with further exposure to the world and to someone who Needs him (Storyteller), without being connected to the whole Sentinel business. If he can get himself out of that context, he might find the road he wants.
Extra: Being an OC Daniel doesn't have any gifs of his own, so have one of my favorite random ones
