Workshop #5: April 2020

Workshop #5: April 2020—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Public Registration will open May 3, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open April 26.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

Lena Sabrewing | DuckTales (2017)

[personal profile] outofyourshadow 2020-04-11 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Usami | [plurk.com profile] usamichan13
Character: Lena Sabrewing
Canon: just after the first episode of S3 of DuckTales
Age: 16
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.) Minor spoilers for S3

Personality Blurb: On the surface, Lena is very much a cool, rebellious teenager. Despite initially being created from Magica's shadow to enact her revenge, Lena was conscious of her own thoughts and feelings separate from Magica, and wanted nothing more than to be free from the witch and live her own life. In the everyday, she is indifferent to most things, sarcastic at every opportunity, and willing to risk some trouble to have a good time. She has spent most of her time on her own and taking care of herself and, because of her secretive nature, is used to doing things without someone else's help.

However, while Lena has a lot of street-smarts and is pretty good at reading people, she's not very good dealing with them on an emotional front. She doesn't have a lot of experience with genuinely connecting with people, and uses sarcasm as a way to hide that she doesn't really know how to interact with others. She's good at pretending that she knows what she's doing, but she can only keep it up for so long.

And after discovering that she genuinely enjoys having friends, she does everything she can to protect the people that she cares about. While she still has a lot to learn, she has recently been shown to be more open with her emotions and affectionate, after having been adopted and now living with a loving family.

Preferred Essence(s): There have been some good suggestions, like Pinocchio and the Big Bad Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. I was also considering Ariel from The Tempest.
Looking For: Characters that were created for servitude, or characters that are more than they seem? Maybe characters that were once evil that turned good. Also, something that would let her keep using magic.

Appearance: She's a duck that's a bit taller than the triplets, but still shorter than the adult ducks. She wears a shirt that's slightly too big for her and sneakers, and has a pink streak in her hair.

Abilities: With the Pinocchio essence, I'm not entirely sure what kind of abilities she could have. With the Big Bad Wolf essence, she would probably turn into a wolf. As Ariel, she'd have a range of different magical powers.

Quirks: As Pinocchio, she would have a lot of trouble telling a lie, enough so that it'll be pretty obvious when she's lying.

Goal: It would be nice to see her grow more emotionally and make more friends
Extra: I don't think there's anything too spoilery about her canonpoint, but I'll try to be careful just in case.

Another suggestion for essence could be Merlin. He has magic and some adaptations have him as more of a servant to Arthur as well.

[personal profile] outofyourshadow 2020-04-11 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Merlin is a really good idea too! Especially with some versions of Merlin's origins.

Plus there are a lot of movies/tv shows that represent him that you can pull ideas from when it comes to abilities and other skills she could eventually gain. And the game has an Arthur so that'd be fun to play off of.
ruinedsky: (happy tea boy)

Sylvain "that slut" Gautier | Fire Emblem 3 Houses

[personal profile] ruinedsky 2020-04-12 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Einir | [plurk.com profile] moxana
Character: Sylvain Jose Gautier
Canon: FE3H and honestly im not sure which timeline???? Definitely post timeskip or post-ending. Probably either AM or VW but... indecisive
Age: 25
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.)

Second-born son to a noble family, but set to inherit because of his Crest. Childhood friends of his future king and a couple other future title holders, he was the oldest of the group. During the events of the game he attends the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach (to help prepare him to inherit the title of Margrave) in the Blue Lions house with the other students from the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.

Personality Blurb: Sylvain is a man of layers, and most of who he really is, you have to go digging for. The persona he displays to the world is that of the lassiez-faire low-effort skirt-chaser who is more interested in getting his dick wet than in anything else. He will flirt with nearly anyone, though he's most famous for flirting with girls (and subsequently cheating on them). For all the world, he believes himself to be an ideal specimen of a man, constantly bragging about himself, while also spending no extra time training to improve, or studying for class.

In truth, he projects this persona to protect himself. He acts like he wants to stand out, but in doing so he ends up blending in. He's just like every other stuck-up noble born boy, only extraordinary in how much he sleeps around. Nobody takes him seriously, and he likes it that way. It protects his friends from worrying about his real problems, and it protects him from getting marked as dangerous. Anyone who sees him as a danger means only that he's a heartbreaker.

To the people who know him best, he's responsible, loyal, and protective. He has a handful of friends he has known literally all their lives, and as the oldest of the bunch took it upon himself to be a bit of a caretaker, when they were small. Though he's covered that softness up with false bravado, he is still deeply invested in their safety and perfectly willing to put himself in harm's way to ensure it. He takes it almost as far as being blase about his own life, in some instances.

Deep down, he's actually kind of a nerd. He was an incredibly clever kid, and he's that kind of asshole who can read something once and remember it forever. He has a hidden talent for logic and black magic, and a love of strategy games. He will get very flustered if someone calls him out on this.

I wrote too much I'm sorry I could write so much more but I'll stfu

Preferred Essence(s): Lancelot
Looking For: suggestions! friends! people for him to flirt with, whether that goes poorly or not! low-stress RP!

Appearance: 186 cm tall, broad chested. Built like the soldier he is. Orange-red hair, kept artfully messy, and pale complexion from living in a cold, mountainous, overcast place. Honey-brown eyes and and easy smile. Freckles on his shoulders and chest and some on his arms.

Abilities: Minor crest of Gautier: occasionally increases Might when using combat arts
Ability to wield the Lance of Ruin
Combat Art: Ruined Sky- a powerful lance attack using the Hero's Relic the Lance of Ruin. Very effective against dragons and flying units.
Budding Talent in Reason: Sylvain has some black magic back home, and he easily learns new skills based around mathematics or strategy

Quirks: Compulsion to flirt with and an unignorable attraction to all unavailable women?
Open to suggestions.

Goal: Just to play this idiot more, and in a structured setting. Letting him be free of the social structure of FE3H and unlearn some of the bullshit. Smack the toxic masculinity right out of him.
Extra: please tell me if there are any routes or things you want to NOT be spoiled on for FE3H. I can choose his timeline based on that.
Also CW in his history for sibling abuse, let me know if you need to avoid that.
Yes this is that same Ein who keeps workshopping and not joining I'm sorry I'm the most indecisive
Questions: any and all suggestions welcome
are you ready for this asshole?

The Red Death is going to one of those skins that never appears, just like Reinhardt's Naval one from the Halloween comic. I want it though. Him swirling around in red frills with feathers flying everywhere? It would be amazing.

They need to argue before they can talk or find any kind of common ground. That's just the way they are these days. Probably throw a punch or two.

We can dream, and know that it's canon he owns the costume with all of the frills and feathers like the true dramatic asshole that he is and always has been. Truly amazing.

Not just argue, but scream until hoarse and everything, leave each other bloody and bruised and reach a point they can't even pretend it's actually satisfying.

Della Duck | Ducktales 2017

[personal profile] spearitedaway 2020-04-16 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Kukki | [plurk.com profile] aurion
Character: Della Duck
Canon: Ducktales (Woo-oo!) | Post-Moonvasion
Age: 36
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.)

Personality Blurb: While Della has just as terrible luck as her brother Donald does, she deals with it completely differently: she never gives up, no matter how bad it gets. When the going gets tough, make another plan, basically. Stranded on the moon? Exhaust every single effort to get back to Earth! A strategy to defeat a monster doesn't work? Try another way! Leg trapped under rubble? CUT IT OFF AND MAKE A METAL ONE. Still, she does get a bit frustrated when there's no easy way out of something. She's even surprised when parenting isn't as easy as she thought it would be!

She's high-spirited, always preferring to look at things in a positive light. She can't possibly see that Penumbra, a Moonlander she "befriended", might not actually like her until someone rephrases her experiences with her in a different way. Even when she shows off her metal leg, she thinks it's cool and can only think of future opportunities she can use it for. She's also very clever, able to see outside the box and predict outcomes rather easily.

Like the rest of her family, Della thrives on adventure. She loves the high stakes involved and learning about different culture from places other than her own. However, this can blind her to consequences, as that's what stranded her on the moon in the first place. Still, it's shown that she can learn. Her experience on the moon led her to look out for all possible exits in case a situation goes badly, and to better prepare herself. It also gave her a healthy dosing of PTSD! Fun!

Being part of the Duck family means that she has a bit of a temper, too. While hers isn't as bad as Donald or even Huey, she's been shown to lose her patience and lash out; tearing apart a book, flailing enough to knock out her brother, among other things. She also has a fun, mischievous side, setting up elaborate pranks that could even have a dangerous side. It's all about the thrill!

Preferred Essence(s): Odysseus, open for other suggestions!
Looking For: Characters who go through trials and challenges for the sake of their family, especially if they're just trying to get back home. Bonus points if moon themed.

Appearance: The one with the snazzy pilot outfit. As an Odysseus essence, she'd have curly hair.

Abilities: None I can think of!

Quirks: The desire to correct her name to "Nobody". No, idk. Wanting to set sail constantly?

Goal: I really want to explore Della's character, especially with ones outside of her canon, as this would be my first time really playing her in a setting. And, of course, spending quality time with her family! I'd also like to work through her issues and, you know. TALK about her problems.
Extra: I understand there was a Della here previously, and it's okay if people remember her being here! She just won't have any memory of that time.

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-16 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! I'm Satyr, planning to bring in this green squirt, and also the former Della player! Yes, I have a duck problem. Anyway, I'm really excited at the idea of Della being in the game - especially since I've never had the chance to play off of the character, myself.

It has been a while since I've gone over Odysseus's story, but I'm pretty sure other will be able to help you think of abilities for the Essence! And I'll be looking into things, too, so I can be helpful going forward.

As for the quirk! Wanting to set sail constantly or just a general affinity for being in water vessels could be really fun. I like that!

Steelbeak | DuckTales (2017)

[personal profile] itsasteel 2020-04-16 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
SPOILERS for those who haven't seen season 3, episode 3 yet.

Player: Meowzy | [plurk.com profile] Meowzy
Character: Steelbeak
Canon: DuckTales 2017 | After being zapped near the end of Double-O-Duck.
Age: Late 20s. (a specific age is not given)
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.)

Personality Blurb: Remember Steelbeak from the old Darkwing Duck series? ...Yeah, forget him. That is absolutely not the same character.

In the Ducktales reboot, Steelbeak is still a secret agent working for F.O.W.L., but he's not very good at it (yet). Frank Angones (story editor and co-producer of the series) confirmed that this version of Steelbeak is young, only just starting out at F.O.W.L. with unearned confidence. All deadly skills, rough edges but no experience. He thinks he's ready to be in charge; believes himself to be on the same level as a veteran agent like Black Heron, only to be dismissed as just another flunky. It seems to hurt his feelings to be underestimated like that. There's some self-esteem issues there.

The trouble with this version of Steelbeak is that he's not exactly the brightest bulb in the bunch. ...At all. When Launchpad beats you in a game of poker (without actually playing poker), you know you're at the bottom of the intelligence ranking. In itself, that wouldn't be too bad, but he doesn't take criticism very well either. He refuses to accept that he could improve. The most interesting way this plays out is that when he gets his hands on a ray gun that can be used to either turn people very smart or very dumb, he doesn't use it to make himself more intelligent. Instead, he tries to amplify the signal to make everybody else dumb. Instead of 'fixing himself', he hopes to kick everyone around him down the IQ ladder to make himself smarter in comparison. It implies a level of pride and ego that's quite dangerous.

Steelbeak's temper is barely kept in check and especially when he gets called stupid (or when something else gets called stupid and he takes it personally), he kinda loses it. He's not a gadget kind of guy, he's more of a brute force kind of guy. Problem solving, in his book, usually involves either his fists, his beak or some kind of weapon. As Frank mentioned Steelbeak was in prison for cockfighting before getting recruited by F.O.W.L., it's easy to see how that lifestyle transitioned into being the 'muscle' for a secret organization.

Despite being kind of a graceless goon, Steelbeak does still have a flair for what he refers to as 'classic villainry'. This comes complete with really, really bad quips.

Preferred Essence(s): Don Quixote, maybe? (Quixote's main goal was to be a chivalrous knight as opposed to villainous spy, but he was still a hotheaded buffoon who, after securing a suit of armor, adopts an overdramatic persona and proceeds to pick fights with just about everyone and everything.)
Looking For: Characters with either a focus on stupid antics, hotheadedness or maybe a prosthetic in reference to his beak? He's not really suave/secretive enough in the reboot to warrant a spy-type character essence.

Appearance: Have a screenshot! Maybe he could have a metal helmet, too? And instead of a big feather poking out the top, it's his comb.

Abilities: Lance wielding? Or horseback riding? Don Quixote doesn't really have any actual skills, he's just a bit of a lunatic in a suit of armor.

Quirks: Extreme denial- but he already had that. Or flairs of being overdramatic, but he already kinda has that too. It feels like occasional hallucinations are maybe a bit overkill as a quirk.

Goal: Maybe acknowledging his own faults instead of blaming other people for his shortcomings. Not only that, but overcoming those shortcomings and growing as a character. Plus, this guy needs friends who treat him right- he's surrounded by jerks in canon.

Extra: I know that we technically have more potential characters here in the Workshop than the 6 character cast cap allows, so if everyone above me wants to go through with applying, obviously I'll take a step back. It's no biggie! (I mean, who is a more worthwhile addition to the cast? Steelbeak or literally anyone else? Hahaha.)
Questions: None.

Hello! I've only played Della a bit on memes (you know, when Bakerstreet ISN'T horny), so I'm excited at the opportunity to try her out in a more structured setting! I really appreciate you connecting with me as the former Della player. I've got some big shoes to fill!

She's just always trying to set sail to get back to her family even though they're, you know, right there. Maybe the urge will go away once she's around them! And maybe in time, she could acquire a bag of winds, though it can only be used once per week as opposed to once and never again.

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-17 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
As for abilities for Pinnochio... lemme see. Maybe she could be magical in the sense that she could manipulate all kinds of wood such as trees or boards, or even things that have been used for actual structures. Like buildings, furniture or whatnot. One could be to manipulate actual puppets too, use them for fighting or just doing chores around the house.

And I don't see why you couldn't use RWBY powers. We're allowed to pull from just about anything in terms of powers and abilities. Though maybe the multiple swords thing is something she has to work up to.
turbodew: (To adventure!)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-17 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hiya, I'm Xae and this blue kid is mine. (I've been here with others but no ducks.)

Odysseus is a good choice considering he had a leg injured in one of his adventures, not to mention all that he does go through. Her abilities could actually be wide and varied, such as strategic, warrior, trickery, illusion (such as disguising herself as a sheep or an old beggar), and maybe even invisibility for Nobody. Good at sailing but since Odysseus upset Poseidon, maybe her boat never goes where she wants it without using her bag of winds.
turbodew: (I dunno)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-17 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, more birbs to flock to this game. As for powers, if you go Don Quixote you could always turn his "abilities" into something more magical. Such as him being able to summon his armor like Gizmoduck does, perhaps his lance is unbreakable (or close to it). I see mention that Don Quixote's books are burned by those close to him so perhaps he could be able to wield fire magic of some kind. Also that he believes this medicine can cure injuries but actually makes them sick so - maybe something along the lines of being able to poison others with the things he makes.

Duo Maxwell | New Mobile Report Gundam Wing | Peter Pan

[personal profile] divine_braid 2020-04-17 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Sailor G | [plurk.com profile] sailorgundam06
Character: Duo Maxwell
Canon: New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (just after Preventer 5, before Frozen Teardrop)
Age: 17/18
Bio Blurb: (optional: Wiki.)

Duo's first bits of canon are in the EW novelization as a nameless orphan running with a gang of street kids. He picks up the name Duo as a result of the gang's leader, who called himself Solo, after a plague nearly killed all the kids in the group. Duo had broken into a hospital and stolen medicine for them, but Solo still succumbed to the illness. When Solo told Duo he would always watch over him, Duo picked his own name to reflect that, "You were Solo, but we'll be Duo."

Duo eventually ends up leading the gang and they're next seen stealing food from street merchants. A priest is nearly trampled by the group, and feels sorry for them, knowing they were all orphans from a war that had happened on their colony before the plague. He finds out where the kids are squatting, and takes them all in to his church. There, Father Maxwell and the head nun, Sister Helen, take care of the children and work to get them adopted into families. Duo keeps getting sent back, and Father Maxwell decides that he will try to get Duo to become a priest. However, another rebellion breaks out around them, and the church is taken over as a base by the rebels, holding the priest, nun, and Duo hostage. Duo escapes, promising to return with the mobile suit the rebels want so that they'll go away and leave the church alone, but, after he steals the suit, he returns to find the church destroyed. Sister Helen is injured, and Duo tries to help her, but he doesn't know how. She dies there, leaving Duo alone once again.

Fast forward a few years, and Duo now known as the sole survivor of the Maxwell Church Tragedy, and the cops joke that he must have made a deal with the devil to survive. He manages to stow away on a salvage vessel that's traveling between space colonies, but, after a few weeks of him evading capture by the ship's crew, they finally catch him. The leader of the group, an old scientist who called himself Professor G, is impressed with Duo's skills and wants to know who the kid is. Duo introduces himself as Duo Maxwell. When G asks if he means likes "Maxwell's demon", as in the scientific meaning, Duo corrects him. "I'm not a demon. I'm the God of Death."

Duo finds out that Professor G is part of a resistance movement working to take out a secret organization infiltrating the Earth Sphere Alliance. The Order of the Zodiac is blamed for being behind the assassination of the colony leader, Heero Yuy, who is an advocate for peace. His death sparked the movement of the rebels, deciding that OZ needed to be eliminated. Five scientists joined together to create the perfect weapon, but they had to split up before they could complete it. On their own, they attempt to recreate it with help from the Barton Foundation, a powerful company also looking to take out OZ, but for their own nefarious purposes. They want to carry out a mission called Operation Meteor in which they plan to drop a space colony on Earth, creating a nuclear winter. In its wake, the five mobile suits being created by these scientists would descend to Earth and take over. Deciding he wanted no part in it, Duo attempts to destroy the mobile suit that G is creating. G convinces him to steal it instead, go to Earth ahead of the colony drop, and take out OZ before the Barton Foundation can have its way.

Commence the main storyline. That's in the wiki. There are several manga that are dated to take place in the year between the end of the series and the OVA.

The five pilots attempt to figure out where they now stand in this new world that they've helped create. Duo drifts. Mostly, he does salvage work, continuing to meet up with G's old group, The Sweepers, and with the other pilots, but never quite settling down. He keeps getting in trouble and having to disappear for weeks at a time. He gets tangled up in several situations (through four different manga side-stories), and comes to the conclusion that, because his identity as a Gundam pilot isn't secret, he can't keep Deathscythe. It's too dangerous, and too many people want it for various reasons, both good and bad. So, after talking it over with the other four pilots, they gather the Gundams and agree to send them into the sun... all but one. Wufei protests and keeps his Gundam instead.

This is where the plot of the OVA, Endless Waltz, fits in. That's also in the wiki. Following that is one small manga called "Preventer 5", which is below.

Not quite a year later, as several high ranking Earth Sphere officials gather to celebrate Relena's birthday, the party comes under siege by a group calling themselves Epyon de Telos. The Preventers gather together the five former Gundam pilots again to help with the hostage situation of most of the government's top leaders. The group gather together and create a plan to get inside. Duo agrees to go in disguised as a member of this new group and pretend to shoot Wufei with blanks, hoping that this action would get him sent down into where the officials are being held. Then, being on the inside, he could coordinate with Quatre in getting the hostages out of harm's way while Wufei, Heero, Trowa, along with the other Preventers, would then engage the hostage takers and take them out.

(This manga basically leaves off here, having illustrated and described the entire plan... so one is left to think it either worked and that was the story, or that the manga was potentially left unfinished... as production, storytelling, and schedules were unfortunately a mess with this entire series.

I don't play with the Frozen Teardrop canon... it takes place in Duo's future anyway, and reveals some weird plot points that really don't affect my character in any sort of retconned way, so I just play him from a canon point that's before it takes place.)

Personality Blurb:

Duo lives up to his name. He blows hot and cold, depending on the situation. Often times, he presents himself as a carefree spirit, quick with a smile and a darkly humored joke. He comes across as someone who sees what he's doing as a game. However, that's completely not true. Duo sees his life as anything but a game. Duo has severe survivor's guilt. His earliest memories are of being on his own, knowing that his parents are dead. He saw his best friend die from an illness that he himself never contracted. He saw the two people who were the only ones he knew as parental figures killed in a rebel strike. Yet, he still lives. This damages him greatly, and leaves him with a sense of his life only being a fluke... that he's only alive because either he really is the God of Death, or he's just managed to get by on sheer dumb luck. Duo has it hard, yet he somehow always manages to survive, and that takes a toll on the teenager's psyche. Duo has abandonment issues. Anyone who gets too close to him dies, so he keeps everyone at arm's length. If he doesn't get close, doesn't get attached, then either they won't die or it won't hurt as much when they finally do. Duo acts like an open book. He's talkative, outgoing, and even says he doesn't lie. But he often twists the truth, hiding behind a cheerful mask. When it comes down to it, Duo takes life very seriously... except for his own. He throws himself in harm's way because someone has to do it and it might as well be him. In his head, he's supposed to be dead three times over, so why not him doing the dirty work? When it counts, Duo can be stealthy and sneaky for infiltration. And, while he might get caught in battle because he's not really an amazing soldier, he's good at breaking out once he's in. There isn't a lock he can't pick or a security code he can't hack. He tends to point this out a lot, acting a bit cocky at times, but he's confident in what he knows how to do, and with good reason.

That's not to say that Duo doesn't have a serious side. When it all boils down, Duo knows what he's gotten himself involved in. He takes it very seriously. He follows the news, he stays on top of information, he's careful. For all the joking and loud behavior, childish acts, and crazy stunts, Duo's not a fool. He's just careless when it comes to himself.

Preferred Essence(s): I was thinking either Peter Pan or Huck Finn.
Looking For: I'm kind of set on this now after debating between Peter and Huck for a while.

Appearance: Duo has long chestnut hair that ends just below his butt. It's thick and straight, but he usually keeps it back in a braid, which gives it an acquired wave. He has overgrown bangs that hang down in front of his face and cobalt blue eyes (deep blue, almost violet). Duo leans towards the bad boy look when left to his own devices... motorcycle jacket, leather pants.

As Peter Pan, the character is described as wearing essentially nothing but foliage, and that would be hilarious, but I kind of want to give him a bit more than a slightly more dressed Tarzan look. Possibly some ragged looking clothing that's been repaired with foliage to give him that runaway/wild child look. Not Disney animation style, but also more than just leaves and vines.

For Huck Finn, obviously there's the straw hat and well-worn clothing of a runaway orphan in early 1800s rural America.

Abilities:

As Peter Pan, Duo would eventually develop the ability to fly. It would be awkward for him at first, but it's a trademark of the character. I also would love for him to have the ability to either summon a fairy spirit for a set amount of time and possibly do some sort of shadow magic, like create a shadow clone of himself or something.

As Huck, I'm a little at a loss. Huck gets away with a lot of lying and trickery, but also has a strong moral code that goes against what's been trained into his conscience in regards to the value of human life regardless of race. So, I'm a little torn between Duo developing perhaps a power of illusion or something along those lines. While Duo doesn't outright lie, he does twist the truth fairly often to suit his needs in the moment, and he's good at hiding things. This would fit right into his personality.

Quirks:

Duo will likely develop the desire to be a prankster. Peter Pan is rather "untamed" in a way because of his somewhat wild life and lack of contact with general civilization throughout his story and this would likely ramp up Duo's more playful aspects of his personality. Duo's not much of a prankster, per se, more of a joker in canon, but adding this prankster side would definitely be something coming from his aspect.

Goal: Just to have fun, I guess? LOL... and widen my own participation by adding a second character.

Oooh, I did not realize the abilities are quite that flexible. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

I have to say, there's something both hilarious and in-character about Steelbeak insisting he has healing powers and the injured character just deadpan saying "OK someone get rid of this clown and get me a real healer." ...Is 'reverse healing magic' a thing? Where instead of mixing up medicine, he just outright uses magic that seems like healing magic but is actually the sort of thing that causes status effects? (poison, paralysis, etc.)

Fire magic in the hands of this guy is like handing a rebellious teenager a blowtorch. He'd have to go through quite a bit of character growth before it's safe to let him have that, but can definitely go on the list as something that takes a very long time for him to master. Armor summoning is also preeeetty neat!

I was about to ask how you wanted to handle Scrooge knowing about Della being here before but then I saw your last line. XD

Though I should warn you, Scrooge thinks that Della's from an alternate timeline where she came back due to him coming from just after Last Crash of the Sunchaser. :D He will just be glad she's come back even if she doesn't remember her previous time here.

XD Scrooge is from two seasons before but he doesn't know this guy works for FOWL so maybe weird potential for CR where he's like "ugh, this guy needs help"?

Hilariously enough, the only one who really knows he works for F.O.W.L. in canon is Launchpad. (Or, well, the remnants of British!Launchpad inside his thick skull.) Knowing Steelbeak though, he might accidentally let it slip at some point or another. Until then, there will be incredible moments of him pretending not to be one of Scrooge's new enemies and instead being a 'fan'.

Yeah, some essences are really easy to pull abilities from and others you have to get more creative with. So you can definitely think outside the box for someone like Don Quixote who has no magical powers in the original. Even pull from anything that has to do with the story from newer canons (I can't think of any tho).

Well, I don't know of any existing abilities that mix up medicine with poison but you can definitely run with that! The limit is your imagination!

Hahah he probably shouldn't have fire magic but it could be something he works up to, yeah. Magic steed could also be a thing, like he whistles and the horse instantly shows up no matter where he is - unless it's like underwater or something.

The Dew-d in blue!!

Ooooh, those are all excellent ideas! And perhaps being able to conjure herbs that can make one impervious to/cure poison, or some other ailment, ie the story with Circe. I'll have to do more research on the tales and come up with some other abilities she could have!

I love the idea of the boat never going where she wants it to, it totally jives with how many times her plans to get off the moon failed. I might have the bag of winds refill more often in that case, just so that she's not lost at sea for too long. She won't have her trusty Oxy-chew with her this time, after all!

AW MAN, so this Scrooge just thinks his Della is lost forever 8(

She'll be so confused about Scrooge remembering her running around, and probably spend an unnecessary amount of time investigating why, but she'll roll with it! As long as her family is here!
