Game Notes #04: November 23, 2018

GAME NOTES #04: NOVEMBER 23, 2018—

Act I of our campaign has been going along great! No worries if your threads are still ongoing, we have enough progress to continue onto the next segment without too much issue. So don't feel rushed to finish anything yet! But now we're getting close to Act II, so we're giving everyone the details and a lot of fixes clarifications as to how to proceed.

Sorry for the bumpy ride, but we'll iron out the kinks as we go along!

§ schedule.

The full schedule is posted on the sidebar, so just going to give the more relevant dates:

CAMPAIGN SCHEDULE
11/26-12/09: Act II (14 days)
12/10-22: Act III (14 days)
MOD NOTES SCHEDULE
12/07: Notes #05
STORY CHECK SCHEDULE
12/01-05: Halfway
12/16-20: Final

So just a reminder that the next Act will span over 13 days and that our first Story Check is happening on the 28th.

§ about posting and threading.

So we think there may have been some confusion as to how players should interact with the campaign. We think some players may have expected a designated log commonly used for events, and while we could do that... That would mean the comms are mostly filled with event logs.

SO! This go around we will not have any designated logs to hopefully prevent confusion. Instead, we will have the narrative log and details about the main scenes in a stickied reference post, and everyone, including those participating in main scenes, are encouraged to create their own posts. Those of the main cast can have their logs closed, or if they want they can have it open and offer additional prompts. Of course no one (except the main cast) is required to make a post, but we do encourage players to be proactive if they can. Both [community profile] realmofstories and [community profile] forgottentales are open for use.

If it helps to conceptualize, don't treat the campaign like a singular event. Instead treat it like extended setting changes that characters have a long time to react to and interact with. (Technically this particular Act may not be the best example, but keep that in mind going forward.)

§ act i: quick summary progress report.

It looks like we're hitting almost every checkpoint! All three main scenes have started and all setting pieces have been discovered and prepared. Ebegeeser's history is also shaping up to be quite. Interesting. As a sign of successful progression, the world is a lot less monochromatic. At the start of Act II, there will be more color in the world as well as more signs of natural life. It's still a bit dull and sparse, but it's a notable improvement from the start.

And that's all we have to say for that (PROMISED SHORT).

§ act ii: details.

Just like last time, there are key main scenes and minor sub quests that will need to be done. As a reminder, only the main cast are leading the main scenes, but anyone is allowed to take up sub quests at their leisure. We're only giving quick summary blurbs here, but there will be an overall reference post that will have fuller details.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In an attempt to make things easier, this go around there won't be as many sub goals for the main scenes. There might be one if it fits, but otherwise it's just the scene as the prompt and players will have free rein on where it goes without having to worry about meeting certain goals doing certain things.

¶ setting.
For the most part, the setting for Act II will be during the van Cratchit's Christmas party at the manor. It's filled with the traditional Christmas decorations, including a large Christmas tree, presents, music, and a buffet for those who may be feeling hungry. And yes, the food will be safe to eat...mostly. Everyone will also find themselves in costume to fit the occasion. Those of the main cast will look their part while everyone else are in plainer clothing (just fitting for random side characters). How will the Horseman look like? Wait until the actual post to find out. Although the focal point is inside the manor, the rest of the story world is still accessible, so anyone is free to leave to do something else.

¶ main scenes.
  1. Ebegeeser and the Horseman of Christmas Present. They will have to journey to the van Cratchit party, and to do so they must deliver certain items to some poor families. The families are actually Blot families and will be mildly hostile. But giving them the gifts will soothe them and they will give an item in return.

  2. Ghost Stories. Lead by Bromfred, various ghost stories are shared, including the one of the Headless Horseman. But what is the Headless Horseman's story? Others are free to participate (especially the Horseman of Christmas Present—who better to tell a ghost story than a ghost?)

  3. Ebegeeser's and Beltrina's Dance. Ah, the time for Ebegeeser to strut his stuff has arrived! The two will share a dance, much to Bromfred's displeasure. Will he intervene? Will Beltrina be impressed by Ebegeeser's efforts? MUSICAL NUMBER.

  4. Bromfred's and Beltrina's Dance. Of course Bromfred must have a dance with his fianceé. Perhaps he was jealous of Beltrina's attention towards Ebegeeser? Was jealousy part of Beltrina's ploy? Or is Beltrina actually having second thoughts...? MUSICAL NUMBER.

  5. Ebegeeser's Plot. During the party, Ebegeeser will be contemplating whether or not he should enact on his plot against Bromfred. But what exactly is this plot? Is it murder? Will he poison Bromfred's food?? Or will it be something more benign, an attempt to embarrass him the same way Bromfred's constantly embarrasses him? Will the Horseman be able to sway him away and push him towards good!? (Not a musical number, but if someone wants to do a villain song, go for it.)

  6. Ebegeeser's Proposal to Beltrina. At the end of the party, whether he tries his plot or not, Ebegeeser will still try to "propose" to Beltrina. But will he be successful?

  7. BONUS: Ebegeeser's and Bromfred's...Dance? Because why not. All right, technically they don't have to dance, just another opportunity for them to spite each other. Or you know they failed in stealing Beltrina for a dance and got stuck with each other instead. This is an OPTIONAL scene that doesn't even need to be played out.

We threw in a few more scenes to allow more folks to have a chance to play the parts since Act III will likely be sparse. In addition, you may notice that a few of these scenes have a lot of hanging questions, and that's because they are choice branches! The answer to these main questions will determine how Act III will play out:

  1. How will Beltrina answer to Ebegeeser's proposal?
  2. How is Bromfred feeling about Ebegeeser's attempts to woo his fianceé?
  3. Will Ebegeeser go through with his plot against Bromfred? If he does, how?
  4. WILL BROMFRED BE DEAD OR ALIVE??

Or do we just want to chuck everything and have Ebegeeser go full villain and kidnap Beltrina? Or what if Beltrina decides that both men are idiots and decides to leave them both!?!?

All right, those questions aren't part of the "script," but just throwing it out there that other options are possible. But to help keep folks on some kind of track, once the cast list has been determined we will ask those involved to give us their planned outcome. That way even if thread progression is slow, we at least know where to take things.

¶ sub quests.
Since we have more main scenes and folks will be spread out, the number of sub quests will be relatively small. But don't forget that even without the sub quests, players are more than free to play around with the setting in general.

  1. Delivering Presents. When not hobnobbing at the party, there are a lot of presents under that tree...and a lot of poor blot families outside the manor. Those in a more gift giving mood can go out and deliver a few. Doing so will not only prevent a riot from starting, but also will further improve the world's environment.

  2. Protect the Christmas Tree. Who brought in the children? They will be trying to take the decorations and throw them around, or worse—try to climb the tree itself. Although letting a disastrous mess happen is allowed, if the tree falls the entire setting will start to flicker, as if a switch has been turned off. Righting the tree will fix it.

  3. Dance and Sing Christmas Carols. What better way to help keep the party alive than to dance and bring music? The dance floor is always open, there's a piano, a fiddle, and a flute, and plenty of sheet music. Let's make this a real party!

  4. Protect the Manor. For those who may not be so festive, there are a few threats lurking outside of the manor that's ready to crash it. Poor and angry blots, minor Erasers, and even a creepy looking Santa Claus are skulking around. They're not too difficult to fight off, but the Santa might prove more annoying with reindeer and small elves helping.

Yeah, basically just take it easy and have fun. It's basically a giant party, but for those who want more action outside of the manor will have plenty of enemies to take care of.

§ act ii: casting.

All right, time to figure out this Act's line-up. We should have plenty of spots open, but if we need to double up, that's perfectly fine. Important: those who were cast in Act I are defaulted as back-ups. This is to allow those who have yet to participate a chance at first pick. That said, those from Act I are encouraged to choose who they'd like to play back-up for. Those who play multiple characters, choose only one first, but if by the end of the sign-ups things are still open, you can slot in your second character. UPDATE: It's the final day and we got slots to fill, so preliminary restrictions have been lifted. GO FORTH EVERYONE

Here's our list:

  • Ebegeeser #1 (Scene 1)
  • Ebegeeser #2 (Scene 3)
  • Ebegeeser #3 (Scene 5)
  • Ebegeeser #4 (Scene 6)
  • Ebegeeser #5 (BONUS: Scene 7)

  • Horseman of Christmas Present #1 (Scene 1)
  • Horseman of Christmas Present #2 (Scene 5)
  • Horseman of Christmas Present #3 (OPTIONAL: Scene 2)

  • Beltrina #1 (Scene 3)
  • Beltrina #2 (Scene 4)
  • Beltrina #3 (Scene 6)

  • Bromfred #1 (Scene 2)
  • Bromfred #2 (Scene 4)
  • Bromfred #3 (OPTIONAL: Scene 3)
  • Bromfred #4 (BONUS: Scene 7)

This time around we have separate comments for each character, and then a separate thread for back-ups. Everyone will be able to write in their first choice and then mention their secondary choices. This will be more pertinent for back-ups.

It's going to be a first come, first serve basis, and sign-ups will close 8PM CST, Sunday, November 25th. We'll slot in back-ups to fit in any open roles.

§ end notes.

All right, that should be everything and hopefully this is a little clearer compared to last time. If you have any questions, just comment here, AND we are open to feedback and suggestions. If there's anything in particular you'd like to say before the next Act starts, please do so!

How will Beltrina respond to Ebegeeser's proposal?

Thread.

Beltrina refused. Granted Ebegeeser didn't really try all that hard (look neither Shizuo nor Asougi were really into this since they both thought it was stupid). But then uh. Fun things happened, such as a crazy fight. HOW THAT WILL WORK IN THE NARRATIVE IDK but there we go.

After a harrowing chat, Ebegeeser decided not to go along with the murderplot because the Horseman seemed sad about it... I guess Ebegeeser is just a gooey boob

The thread!
