STORY CHECK SCHEDULE
5/03-09: Act III Story Check

We're onto the final act of our story campaign! After this we'll have a nice summer break, though whether it'll be one month or two is still up in the air.

§ public registration

As we've previously announced, public registration will open May 3rd with claims opening on April 26th. Feel free to go ahead and tell anyone you know! Remember that friends with invites can come in at any time, including during the Act. Otherwise, Act III will end May 9th and we should hit our main break right after.

Be sure to keep an eye out for any new workshops on the new Workshop and Test Drive!

§ act ii summary

Congratulations on completing Act II; even with the village curse tripping people up (I can feel the groans already), we've managed to break some curses, fall under new ones, and send this plot on a winding medieval equivalent of a roller coaster! And now, the story thus far...

Bonny Rose and Puck met and proceeded to blame each other for the donkey curse, but eventually took a moment to realize they needed to work together in order to brew the cure, with Bonny Rose protecting Puck while he gathered ingredients and brewed the potion. (All while bickering and swearing as only fantasy-Scottish redheads can.)

After freeing the town, Bonny Rose was in a much better mood and got along considerably better with her new traveling companion Nick Bottom, developing an amiable friendship until the two were separated by distracting swarms of butterflies and will-o-wisps.

Titania found Nick in the forest and he followed her willingly to her castle, with the queen demonstrating her considerable might defending her new paramour against a serpentine creature. The two indulged in a steamy bath and soothing Titania's wounds.

Surprisingly, Oberon and Carabosse had a scintillating past as lovers and partners on the battlefield, until Carabosse fell too deep into dark magic and Oberon began to fall for Titania. The two of them had a tense but surprisingly civil conversation about the past, the curse and her kidnapping plans, and Titania's mothering skills, and Carabosse promised to alter the curse and divulged that it can be broken with True Love, romantic or platonic.

Oberon managed to coax a particularly sharp Titania to their room, and eventually managed to break the curse on her.

Titania apologized to Nick for her behavior while under the love potions' effects. He accepted her apology, and the two agreed to part ways and for Nick to be left alone from now on.

Meanwhile, Bonny Rose and Tam Lin met in the forest, and the two normally outgoing youths were so stricken with each other that they became shy. They bonded over their shared feelings of being trapped in certain roles, and Tam Lin managed to charm her by introducing her to a wolf pup and taking her on a ride through the forest.

After the lovebirds parted ways, Tam Lin went to Puck for romantic advice. This was a mistake, as apparently fairy romance is much more complicated than Tam Lin thought, all he wanted was to know how to ask out a girl.

Carabosse managed to lure Tam Lin away with a handsome male visage before revealing her true form, offering Tam Lin a chance to join her dark forces. He refused, and she unleashed the (altered) curse on him.

Holy moly… and we thought The Little Mermaid went to crazy places. Let's see how the madness resolves itself in Act III, shall we?

§ act iii details

All right guys, we're at the final act! And it's definitely going to be a wild ride thanks to the Aspect's groundwork before. This thrilling conclusion is going to tackle the question of "what is true love?" Also, dragons. Lots and LOTS of dragons. Berk, eat your (stallion's) heart out.

Setting. The final stage of this story is set in a dreary dungeon fortress filled with numerous towers and dragons flying overhead. It's bleak, thunder always rolling overhead and lightning striking here and there. Strange green flames will erupt in random places, the fires hot to the touch, but rather than be burned they make anyone exposed to their fumes for too long irritable and distant. Soulless suits of armor patrol the halls, ready to attack anyone and anything in their sights, and other ghastly creatures and monsters lurk within the dark halls.

This time, characters are no longer in their fairy forms, however they will be granted the ability to transform into dragons. This can be partial or wholesale and include parts of their essences. Partial transformations can last for a while—maybe that tail is just hard to get rid of—but whole transformations can only last for up to ten minutes before they are forced back to their normal form. It takes up a lot of energy, so they can only transform a total of ten minutes per hour (this means a person can use up the dragon transformation in one ten minute period or could do it in two five minute periods for that hour). Eating some rare fruits will help them recover faster. In terms of abilities, it will vary depending on the type of dragon. Some could fly, others could only glide; perhaps some don't even have wings and can only scale walls. Size can also vary, so some could be huge or others very small. Fire breath, lightning breath, ice breath—those can also vary depending on the type. We only ask that players limit these forms to one type throughout the Act.

As always, Aspects will still have access to all their Essence abilities. The dragon transformations are just a bonus.

Main Scenes. We have six main scenes, with one optional scene.

  • Scene 1: KING OBERON AND QUEEN TITANIA. Back in their kingdom, before Tam Lin is cursed and after bringing Titania to her senses, Oberon tells Titania of the sabotaged communication between him and Carabosse in the decades past. It is here that Titania reveals the truth: she is the one who took the letters, believing that they were still communicating their love in secret. Obviously, this is not going to go very well. How will the two reconcile? What will Oberon do? Is this their own "true love's" test? (Note: It should be noted that Oberon and Titania supposedly have had a very wonderful and loving relationship together in the past several decades so whether or not this causes a rift between them is up to the characters.)

  • Scene 2: QUEEN TITANIA AND CARABOSSE. After what happens with Oberon, Titania will find and confront Carabosse. Whether it's to ditch Oberon to join Carabosse, reconcile or start a catfight, Titania must reveal the truth behind the sabotaged letters. It would be in everyone's best interest if they made some kind of amends, but fairies. Grudges can last a while.

  • Scene 3: BONNY ROSE AND PUCK. Meanwhile, after Tam Lin is taken away, Puck meets with Bonny Rose to plead for her assistance and guide her to the tower(?) where he's being held. It's within the dark fairy realm and the path is fraught with danger, but surely they should be able to get past the guardians and traps awaiting them.

  • Scene 4: BONNY ROSE AND TAM LIN. After making it to the tower chamber Tam Lin is kept, Bonny Rose must now awaken him by an act of true love. Stories always tell of a "true love's kiss," but can true love really be achieved in a single day? Thanks to Carabosse's alteration, there only needs to be some heartfelt gesture towards Tam Lin to awaken him. However, after a touching reunion, they will soon find the curse still in effect as Tam Lin transforms into a dragon. The process is painful and causes him to temporarily go berserk, but can Bonny really fight him off? Despite best efforts to fend him off and coax him, he flies out through the window. (Note: Characters playing Tam Lin's role will take on their dragon form and while they will feel grumpy, they will not feel as much pain and will more or less have to act out as an out of control dragon.)

  • Scene 5: BONNY ROSE AND CARABOSSE. Bonny tries to chase after Tam Lin, but is unable to take to the skies after him. She comes face to face with Carbosse instead. She will pose the following questions to Bonny Rose: "Do you know what true love is? Can you prove it to me?" and issue a series of challenges for Bonny Rose to show her why she's going so far for Tam Lin. Does she actually love the guy or what? If she succeeds, Carabosse will grant her a dragon steed to chase after Tam Lin as well as a warning: the longer Tam Lin remains a dragon, the more likely he will become one. Carabosse will also give a hint that to break the curse Bonny Rose must be willing to share the burden as proof of "true love" and give her a glowing flower. (Note: The players can come up with their own challenges be it random quizzes, battles, puzzles, etc. but we'll provide a few examples that best match the selected characters.)

  • Scene 6: TAM LIN AND BONNY ROSE. The scene starts in the air with Tam Lin as a dragon and Bonny Rose chasing after him on the dragon steed. Tam Lin keeps away from her in fear of hurting her, so Bonny must try to coax him (cue long chase scene). Remembering Carabosse's words, Bonny decides to take Tam Lin's curse onto herself. With the flower's help, she'll begin transforming into a dragon, and now it's up to Tam Lin to stop her. To do so he must awaken as a true fairy prince and use the flower to cure her. (Note: The bulk of the thread will be on the chasing and any conflict resulted from Bonny's transformation. Characters will use their own dragon transformations, and the one playing Tam Lin will be grouchy but otherwise remain themselves so they will mostly be acting as out-of-control. There is no actual risk to the characters.)

  • Optional Scene: PUCK AND NICK BOTTOM. After helping Bonny Rose, Puck returns to find more help and encounters Nick in the forest. After discussing various plans, he ropes Nick into acting as delivery people for the queen's latest issue of that one (BL) serial novel she likes so much. At least that's what they try to do. The blot guards may or may not be convinced, and the two might have to straight up fight them/steal their uniforms to complete the infiltration.

Sub quests.

  • Dungeon Sweep. Another Act, another place to clear out to make it hospitable during their stay.

    • Safe Zone. The safe zone in this location is a central outdoor plaza, which may not seem all that safe, but that's where they end up. Flowers from Tam Lin's forest can be found sprouting around the area and like before, the pollen can be used to help erect magical barriers to prevent enemies from entering. There are also small storehouses, barracks, and a kitchen nearby that can be used.

    • Haunted Armor. Aside from the monsters, there is an army of haunted armor patrolling the halls and walls of the fortress, and some will even try to break into the safe zone. Although mostly armor, they are formidable foes, each one carrying the spirit of a strong, powerful knight of ancient times. Even if one were to hack off parts of the armor, they will still be able to move and even reattach themselves. The only way to completely destroy them is by piercing through the center of the chest piece where a stone core rests inside.

    • Disabling Traps. There are numerous traps within the fortress, ranging from classic spikes from the walls to sudden pitfalls to revolving walls and even a rolling boulder. When venturing through the fortress, take care not to set them off because where there's on trap, there are sure to be more.

  • Dragon Egg Hunt. Many dragons can be seen flying overhead, but they don't really bother the characters all that much. If anything they seem to be focused on dealing with some other problems, and those who venture up to the other towers will discover the reason why—as well as why they're able to transform into dragons.

    • Egg Thief. There are several dragon nests scattered about the towers, but there are these harpies that keep trying to steal them and fly away with them. Chase after them and return the eggs to earn the dragons' favor.

    • Protect the Eggs. One would think a dragon wouldn't have trouble protecting its roost, but when it comes to smaller threats such as small basilisks and other large snakes, their large size becomes a disadvantage, especially if they don't want to accidentally crush their own brood. Help fend off these threats to earn the dragons' favor.

    • Egg Hunt. Now some of these eggs are on the move. Whether taken by something else and hidden somewhere, rolled off on their own, or on their way to hatching with their little legs or wings already breaking through, they need to be found and returned to their nest before something truly terrible happens.

And final reminder that time is ambiguous so we don't need something to finish before we move onto the next. That's part of the pre-planning!

§ cast sign-up

Here are the list of roles for this Act:

Tam Lin: Scenes #4 and 6
Bonny Rose: Scenes #3, 4, 5, and 6
Puck: Scenes #3 and Optional
Carbosse: Scene #2 and 5
King Oberon: Scene #1
Queen Titania: Scenes #1 and 2
Nick Bottom: Optional Scene

Each character role has its own sign-up thread and will be frozen once filled. Sign-ups are a first come first serve, but we do ask everyone to include a second preference just in case people need to be switched around. To keep things fair, we'd like everyone to follow these instructions:

  • Please sign up for one role first and then double up if slots are still open by the end of the sign-up. This applies to players with multiple characters as well. Pick one first and then wait a day or two before signing up with your other characters to allow other players a chance.
  • If participating again, please pick a different role than what the character had before to allow some variety.
  • We ask for back-up volunteers in case something happens and someone needs to be replaced.
  • Please only sign up if you will be able to tag consistently and often enough to progress the threads in a reasonable and substantive manner.

To reiterate, we have more players and characters than we do roles, so we want to have as many players participate as possible during the campaign as a whole. Hence some of the stricter requirements to ensure a larger spread. Of course, after one or two days, it's a free-for-all and players can sign double up and fill in as they'd like or as necessary.

Sign-ups will last until Saturday, April 11 and we'll give final calls on Friday if necessary.

§ end notes

And that's all for now! If you have any questions, feel free to comment here.
