Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
- Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
- Public Registration will open May 3, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open April 26.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?
Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.
Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.
Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.
Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?
Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.
Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Rei Ryugazaki | Free!
Character: Rei Ryugazaki
Canon: Free!, end of S2
Age: 16
Bio Blurb: (Fandom wikis are all incomplete, so here's summaries.)
A newly-established high school swim team comprised of old elementary school pals needs a fourth member to truly begin. They take on a reluctant Rei, who is on the track team, merely because he has a feminine name like the other members. When it's discovered he can't swim, he is brushed up on newfound swimming skills and put to the test in upcoming tournaments, where Rei discovers that logic, calculations and beauty aren't the end-all be-all but the connections you make with others and the impact you in turn make. He learns this through the team, and puts it to practice by helping them to reconnect with an estranged member, Rin, who despite his cold demeanor and confrontational behavior simply wanted to swim with his friends again. Though it cost the Iwatobi Swim Club the tournament via disqualification, because Rin swam for a rival school and technically wasn't allowed to participate in another school's relay, the friendship that was rekindled was worth so much more than a championship.
With the team reconnected, each respective member turns their attention to their respective dreams and more importantly their futures: As they each graduate and move on to adulthood, will they stay connected? How hard will they fight for their futures and that of the swim club itself, bearing only four members? There's some promise as Rei sneaks off to improve, take some lessons on other swimming styles from Rin himself for starters.
Personality Blurb: It's said that many girls have the same opinion of Rei: He looks cool and he acts cool... but then he opens his mouth. When he isn't happy to express his knowledge of a topic in an attempt to be impressive to others, he's crunching numbers and calculations in his head and under his breath to fully grasp, well, everything. The right way to pole vault? There's math for that. Swimming? Surely there's theory that he could absorb and he would simply master it. The problem is that he's too "left-brained" in a lifestyle that's more on the "right". When he inevitably fails in a task despite the math being right, he's puzzled as to why and openly voices his frustation. He can never mask his emotions; he's like an open book. He's unafraid to be joyful, afraid, angry or point out a flaw.
Over the course of the story, he learns that sometimes he needs to use his heart and shut off that brain of his; he needs to learn to be free. The moment he does, he finds that he is more successful in the grand scheme of things. Though he'll still hit the books and continue to exercise his mind, Rei is growing every day when it comes to following his heart, doing what's right. Overall he can be exasperating, but it comes from a vulnerable place. A patient ear and a kind voice will see through the eccentricity and find a young man that's still learning how to become the man he wants to be, and isn't above a moment of softness, of reaching out or comforting others.
Preferred Essence(s): "The Butterfly" from the Hans Christian Andersen tale of the same name, or Odette from "Swan Lake"
Looking For: Anything that fits him, but would challenge him in some sense, lending to helping him grow as a person. I always enjoy taking a character- especially a slice of life-based one- as far out of their element as possible.
Appearance: Tall with an athletic build, purple eyes, red glasses, blue hair. He's a looker but again, he's a walking dictionary.
With the Butterfly essence he would sport a lovely pair of functioning wings, patches of colored spots down his body (color undecided), and a handy set of antennae.
With the Odette essence, he will bear a black domino mask-shaped mark around his eyes and be adorned in a crown and princely garb, the coat tails bearing the appearance of wings with long flight feathers.
Abilities: Rei was on the track team and is presently on the swim team. He can run for miles quite comfortably and sprint with little wind-up, and he can swim effectively (so long as he sticks to butterfly stroke. Other styles, and he sinks).
With the Butterfly essence, he will lose his ability to swim. Square one, baby. But he'll gain flight and the ability to speak with plants and insects... maybe plant conjuration? I'm looking to build on the concept of a plant mage-type.
With the Odette essence he can speak to birds, and sprout wings to allow for flight? Maybe some water manipulation, or maybe something moon-based. Again, looking to workshop.
Quirks: The Butterfly essence comes with the quirk that he must delve deeply into learning all there is to know about flowers and perhaps become a green thumb.
He just has to try not to marry the flowers. No, seriously, read the story. The Odette essence comes with a taste of Rothbart's curse: If he does not bathe in outdoor, open waters (fountains, lakes, ponds) while the moon is reflected on the water at least once every three nights, he will be turned into a (very handsome, bespectacled) talking swan.
Goal: Character growth, and feed my urges as a faerie tale ho.
Extra: He has a character song sung by his voice actor. Bless him.

Hmm, but I feel like things can be beefier. I don't know how far I could take the concept ability-wise and wouldn't mind feedback.
no subject
Hmm... well, there is the Swan = Cucco... summon all the cuccos when in danger. You could also include something involving dance since Swan Lake is a ballet performance.
no subject
hahaha maybe down the line he can just straight up BIRD UP on people.

Re: Rei Ryugazaki | Free!
the idea of Rei's indignant honks give me life. I'm voting Odette.

So to give you a basic idea of the game mechanics; after every successful campaign, we can add 2 new abilities to our character, and make an 'upgrade' of our choice to our each of our pre-existing ones.
So starting with 2-3 basic abilites but keeping in mind new ones to add on later is a good idea.
One thing you could add on is Ballet itself; giving Rei the ability to dance as gracefully as swan, because we can draw not only on skills from the stories themselves, but popular conciousness/takes on the stories
(like for example Dojima being able to fire off sword lasers from excalibur, or me offering Lae to have Dojima's excalibur swapped out for Soul Eater excalibur at her discretion BD)
So you could argue to give him a 'black swan' ability eventually, tho you'd need to ask the mods for that I think.

So what I should look into is a basic set and write down some potential upgrades and new additions. I had an awesome suggestion handed to me while out on errands: What if he dances and it's piddly because he needs to 'build respect' with the water he conjures, kickin' it slightly Moana-style in that it is somewhat alive?
Then he'd be kicking himself for not listening to Haru more when it comes to his water fetish... and as he helps complete campaigns the water sort of starts tolerating him more and more and maybe gains an icy flair? MORE BEAUTY....!!
Black swan? I'm not familiar.
no subject
And oooh, that's a good idea; Fuuka has a similar 'need to gain respect from the element they're using/bending', her being wind.
And oh, it was a psychological thriller back in 2010 about Swan Lake and dopplegangers.
here's the link with the plot and such.
The idea is that the ballet dancer for the Swan Princess and the 'black swan' who tricks the Prince are the same, though character wise they're different people so I dunno if it would apply. I'm mostly just spit balling ideas!

In any case, both work really well! Butterfly would be more fitting because Butterfly lol Also plant-mage would be cool! A bespectacled swan tho... a bespectacled water-bender swan tho!
no subject
What'd you pick for Makoto before, out of curiosity?
Lastly, YEAH it's tough choices and both have opportunities for comedy and growth. He wouldn't be fond of the idea of running away from a curse by drowning with someone, nor would be like being pinned and put in a case in a lonely cabin.
no subject
Yeah, both have their downsides but in general, they don’t have to worry about those parts of the story at least! They get to live pretty normally aside from whatever their stories gives them physically at least!
no subject
Yeah, if anything he'd want to change things. Tragedies have to be done right to be beautiful, but this is reality!! Water-bending swan though... hmmm... I don't wanna 100% stick him as a swan, but I will have him interacting with folks potentially AS one and wanna work in a mechanic for that. The curse is inconvenient and a way to keep Odette from being 'free', which fits a lot into the ol' swimboys story, and I wanna play with that aspect rather than let him freely go bird.
no subject
We got a Rapunzel with Bayonetta hair because of Tangled so hahah
no subject
My idea wasn't permanent, actually! But now that I think about it, bathing to keep swan-ness away and bathing to cure swan-ness would be kind of redundant. So the monthly idea sounds pretty good, maybe based on the moon phases since he has to dabble in moon-touched water (totally an idea grabbed by Swan Princess) but perhaps he can be drawn by those bodies of water, too... so he gets bits of Haru in there too.
Must strip. Must be in water. At least he doesn't crave mackerel.
no subject
But yeah, I didn’t think it’d be permanent but every three days is a lot too haha. Of course a lot of it could be handwaved in the background so it’s not really that intrusive. But having it tied to moon phases would be pretty neat! Maybe depending in which phase is also how much swanness he gets lol instead of going full swan he goes halfway and gets wings or something.
no subject
Ooh, I like that idea. And later on it can sort of... develop? Like he can call wings by his own will and stuff. And then we get...!! A fail-flight montage! So much flapping and he's sinking back to earth.
