Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.
- Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.
- Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.
- The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.
- Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.
- Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.
- Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.
- Public Registration will open May 3, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open April 26.
If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?
Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.
Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.
Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.
Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?
Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.
Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Skull Kid | Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Character: Skull Kid
Canon: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, post-game
Age: ??? He acts like a little kid, so let's go with 10?
Bio Blurb: Wiki.
Skull Kid is possibly an ancient spirit of some sort that befriended the godlike Giants of Termina. During the first Carnival of Time, however, the four Giants decided become guardians of the land, with each one travelling to one of Termina's four regions. Everyone was OK with that... except for Skull Kid. He didn't realize that the Giants had an important duty to fulfill. Instead, he saw it as a betrayal. His best friends just up and ABANDONED him! He was devastated, and in turn he threw the world's longest temper tantrum. He became an awful brat, taking out his anger on everyone he met. To make matters worse, his pranks upset so many people that they called the Giants back to stop him, and the Giants in turn scolded Skull Kid and told him to shape up or leave Termina. Spoilers: It didn't work and he remained an annoying little shit.
Things got a little better when he met Tatl and Tael, a pair of fairies who also had no one else but themselves. The three misfits got along famously, but since the fairies were also brats, Skull Kid's behavior didn't improve much. Now he had a posse, and the three of them continued being troublemakers together. Things were going great until they jumped a travelling mask salesman in the woods. One of things they stole was Majora's Mask, a mysterious relic that housed an extremely powerful demon. Skull Kid was immediately fascinated with the mask and put it on. At first, he seemed to have control of the mask's powerful magic, and used it to enhance his tricks. However, the longer he wore it, the more the demon inside influenced him, until Skull Kid's mostly harmless pranks gave way to Majora's chaotic machinations. Skull Kid/Majora sowed discord across the land, eventually culminating in calling down the moon to crash into the earth, which would undoubtedly destroy Termina.
Fortunately, Link came to town and saved the day, gathering the four Giants and serving Majora an epic beatdown. Skull Kid was saved from demonic possession and was immediately apologetic for his actions. He also got a long overdue reunion with the Giants, and he finally understood that they didn't just abandon him, and that they still loved him.
Personality Blurb:
Skull Kid is a... difficult child. He's rude, obnoxious, and doesn't know how to conduct himself in polite society. He loves to play pranks, including but not exclusive to vandalism, petty thievery, causing minor injuries, and humiliating people. He's self-centered, and he doesn't care if he makes anyone angry so long as he gets a laugh out of it. He doesn't have a family or any kind of positive adult figure in his life, and the friends he does have are also social outcats, so his grasp on the concept of right versus wrong is tenuous at best.
Here's the thing, though: Skull Kid doesn't play pranks because he's inherently bad. He does it because he's acting out. Being left behind by the four Giants scarred him for life, and now he has the most intense abandonment issues in the known universe. Of course, his bad behavior doesn't endear him to anyone, so he only pushes more people away, which only makes him angrier. Even before he got his hands on Majora's Mask, Skull Kid was infamous for being a trickster- Tatl even remarks that "it was because he was always playing tricks, so nobody wanted to play with him".
As a result, Skull Kid is so incredibly lonely. He's desperate for friends, but at the same time his automatic response is to push everyone away. He makes people mad so he can convince himself they weren't going to be his friend anyway. And of course, this just feeds into his issues and makes him even more lonely and bitter. He DOES have the capacity to be good in him, though, it's just really hard for him to keep from falling back into his bad habits. There are moments in between all the pranks and terrorizing when he's just a playful little kid who wants to run and play music and draw pictures. Maybe all he needs is someone to give him a chance.
Preferred Essence(s): Puck, A Midsummer Night's Dream
Looking For: Trickster characters, children, fairies, etc
Appearance: It him. I imagine his appearance wouldn't change too much because he's already a weird little forest imp/fairy-like being.
Abilities: In canon, all of his powers came from Majora's Mask, which he no longer has access to, and thank goodness for that. Without the mask, he's mostly a normal kid, albeit a weird and possibly immortal one. He can play the flute and he loves to draw.
With the essence of Puck, he'd gain:
MAGIC!: Of course! I figure he wouldn't be very powerful to start with, and he would use his magic to pull pranks instead of using it for fighting, to fit in with the trickster motif. For example:
-He can't summon water, but he can cause someone to spill their drink all over themselves
-He can attack a person, but he can make their shoelaces tie themselves together so they trip and fall
-He can't hurl fireballs, but he can cause candles to fall over and set something on fire
Eventually he can work his way up to things like casting illusions or polymorphing someone's head into that of a donkey. He could even learn some kind of sleep spell to go along with the "it's all just a dream" theme of the play.
WINGS?: I mean, Puck IS a fairy even though depictions of him and other fairies vary wildly. Fairies in the Zelda series are more often than not the "pretty winged person" variety. Being able to fly would make Skull Kid an even more effective prankster!
Quirks: The classic fairy weakness to iron. No swords for him, but why would you give this kid a sword, anyway?
Goal: GET THIS BOY SOME POSITIVE ROLE MODELS
Extra:
Questions: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
no subject
I offer up Junpei and Dojima for pranking, though they might be able get through to the
bratKid... we'll see!no subject
