Workshop #5: April 2020

Workshop #5: April 2020—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Public Registration will open May 3, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open April 26.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

All...three...triplets? /faints!

Also, he is going to love Scrooge's home, I think.
richestduck: (Smirk)

[personal profile] richestduck 2020-04-04 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Also could make Texas Hold Em canon LOL

Strangely heartbreaking and wholesome at the same time because Scrooge got his family back...but he doesn't realize it's his own timeline.
turbodew: (That might be my fault)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-04 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought so too. Good thing Scrooge can help keep an eye on him with those ravens of his. Only just looked now and I'm laughing at the fact that one is named Memory. XD
turbodew: (I dunno)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-04 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OK! Now that I have watched the movie, Beowulf is a good choice for Barley.

Another ability he could have is to swim no matter what he's wearing - even if that's a full suit of armor. And perhaps he could just summon a weapon, any weapon he can think of (kind of in the KH/FF13 style). He could also have superstrength as the poem mentions tearing Grendel's arm off with his bare hands.

As for quirks, perhaps it could be something like "always a hero but never The Hero". Which is kind of how Barley is in the movie too. Always eager to step up to a fight to protect but never claiming any credit it might earn him.
gwniver: Scheming (hear my prayer)

[personal profile] gwniver 2020-04-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Those are some awesome suggestions! Though I should probably limit what kind of weapons he can summon at first before he ends up with 12 Cursecrushers on accident or something... Though now that I think of it, equiping him with a sword like the Cursecrusher that is super effective against monsters would be neat. And would that mean his clothes never get wet?

As for the quirk... Yeah, wouldn't it be redundant if he's already like that?
Edited 2020-04-05 02:04 (UTC)
turbodew: (Um hold up what?)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe he can only summon them one at a time and has to switch it out in order to get something different. It could mean his clothes never get wet!

Hm well, Barley may be willing to do that for his family but this could encompass everyone else too.
gwniver: (Here in the spotlight)

[personal profile] gwniver 2020-04-05 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a good balance, thanks.

Hm... That might sound like a good idea, but maybe extend it to people he has good CR with instead of just anyone? That seems to make more sense to me.

Reaper | Overwatch

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Vette | [plurk.com profile] apomorphine
Character: Reaper (Previously Gabriel Reyes)
Canon: Overwatch
Age: Eternal suffering has no age. Joking; he's 58 years old.
Bio Blurb: (optional: Reaper’s Wiki.)

Personality Blurb:
Reaper is a calculating, strategic asshole. Years of warfare have molded him into a weapon first and what’s left of a human being last. He uses his dramatic outfit and overt sarcastic rudeness to keep people at a distance, no stranger to acting out when it will suit his purpose and current plan. He deals in the currency of information, but he also isn’t above selling his skills if it earns him what he wants. He is deeply driven, deeply bitter, and deeply distorted.

He is a man who has and guards his secrets close to the chest. In the words of Tony Stark: “his secrets have secrets”. He formulates plans, carries them out, is willing to train and make bargains for advantages that land him with his many goals. While he might seem to have simple motivations, they are highly complex and multi-layered. The best way to beat an enemy and pin down an ally is to have them underestimate what one is capable of.

For all his planning, he is also a deeply divided and struggling individual. Chronic pain, twisting changes and a shattered moral compass have left Reaper with a sadistic side. He doesn’t fear death or pain or torture or confrontation, making him willing to sacrifice everything he is because, well, he’ll just come back for revenge after. And if it gets him what he wants, mission accomplished.

Preferred Essence(s): La Lechuza – Murderous shape-changing owl witch hellbent on avenging wrongs done against them.
Looking For: Latin American or Mexican folklores mostly.

Appearance:
Reaper 01 & Reaper 02

Reaper takes the death aesthetic very seriously, modeling his appearance partially on a barn owl, which is a symbol of death in Mexican lore and covering that in black. Aside from the skin above his elbows, he is covered head-to-toe in material and body armour. His clothing and his armour have the ability to dissolve into black smoke like the rest of him.

Beneath all that attire, he appears pale as a corpse. His body is in a general state of disquiet at all times, and he experiences body dysmorphia. Like the shape-shifter he can be, his physical appearance can seem liquid at times with hair constantly growing and receding, a ripping of smoke seeming to twist off of his skin.

Abilities: Reaper will retain his super-soldier physical attributes, his life stealing ability, and the ability to fall apart to clouds of black smoke. Not sure if I should let him still pull shotguns out thin air. With his folklore, he will gain the ability to control and change the weather (dramatic fog and well-placed flashes of lightning here we come) and shape-shift.

Quirks: Shape-shifting to ridiculously large animals, but mostly to birds. In legend, La Lechuza appears as a 6ft tall owl or raven or other bird of prey with a 15ft wingspan; now imagine it as a peacock or a cockatoo or even a hummingbird.

Goal: Force him to realize he might have more than revenge, and it will be interesting to see him interact with the setting and adjust to the folklore powers it grants him.

Questions: "Haven’t I killed you somewhere before?"
gr1m: (Hello darkness my old- WHAT DO YOU WANT)

[personal profile] gr1m 2020-04-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I'm forever lazy right now so deal with double Reaper accounts talking I guess-

but also helpful or not idk I'm just stoked okay. We've talked about this on Discord too so.

I do suggest having his clothing just all the more dramatic and fitting of being the owl witch. Like, think about the Nevermore robes but more owl maybe. Make him look like a warlock in a way, and either love it or hate it with his dramatic tastes. Many feathers, talon-ish boots-

I could go on.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I was leaning towards Nevermore outfit, maybe more feathers and such. I kind of want to keep the owl-mask, since that's more what he's based on, but Nevermore does have that neat raven mask... too many options and I'm very indecisive sometimes.

Does he really need talon boots though?
gr1m: (Wraithing)

[personal profile] gr1m 2020-04-07 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Get it maybe having a richer dark purple/black as well? Or perhaps having it sort of mimic the feather pattern of a darker colored barn owl- sooty owls are an example and can look a little starry sky, and are in the barn owl family of things. Can even have the fun of pushing the mask far more barn-owl shaped as well. I know the indecisive feeling and I can just sink in to neat little details.

For dramatics sakes? Possibly, just normal nice boots but have owl-like talon armor overlaying on them for protection and what not.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
That could be a thing. Though, I do like the idea of him looking like a starry night, especially in the darkness. That would be kind of creepy. I'll have to look into more owl-like designs for masks; god bless the internet.

Makes me think of Vincent Valentine and his ridiculous gold boots. :/ The rat king outfit had claws I seem to remember.
gr1m: (Haven't been stable for a long time)

[personal profile] gr1m 2020-04-07 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Like sooty owls can give some lovely inspiration for that? Can see where I'm pulling "look like a starry night sky" from as well when it comes to the feather pattern. For real to.

You not wrong, and also it very much does have claw boots. Give or take my focus is more on the hooded robes and just how dramatic that can get, really.

You've got some good abilites there with the shapeshifting in to an owl/other birds but also the stormy weather control and I can't think of anything to suggest there because really outside of... I think there's parts of the folklore that makes La Lechuza immune to bullets when not shapeshifted? Or the other way around, it's hard to remember.

It would be interesting that he uses that look in order to get close to his chosen prey as well. A kind of camouflage that he would definitely enjoy. And his appearance can change depending on his shape-changing.

Wow he's such a dramatic jerk. I love him so much. All the flowing robes that look like feathers and claw boots.

I mean, Reaper is mostly immune to bullets anyway. He just turns to smoke. It's the electricity he needs to watch out for.
gr1m: (Time to move out)

[personal profile] gr1m 2020-04-07 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Work very well for it, and no doubt something he could appreciate in some way- could keep the color-scheme with whatever he changes in to as well if wanted I imagine.

Right? It's a overly dramatic beautiful damn theatrical mess, and it's so good I love him.

Very, very true honestly. I mean, paired with the genetic enhancements like Jack himself has, along with the smokey wraith bullshit from further genetic fuckery, pairing that with Lechuza's weather manipulation and shapeshifting he's pretty well covered ability wise, in a way.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'll have to think of the best colour scheme for what I hope to have him do in the game. He does like his night-ops after all, though let's be real, a 15 ft wing span is not subtle at all.

He is such a mess, but he lives his mess of a life to its theatrical fullest.

He is very well covered. Once he learns his essence - and he won't have much else to do but master it - he will be a handful. Probably for the best. He'll probably make enemies.
steadypulse: (A whole fucking year)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-04-07 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Can't forget that silent flight barn owls have, so at night weirdly a lot more subtle and all the more frightening in a Noticed Too Late sort of way. Just gotta not hit trees or something to give himself away.

It's the way we love him best.

76 pretty much doing the same- outside of the time spent swept up having to repair a story. So it isn't like Reaper will go without some formidable opposition in here with some other characters, too. Or the fact 76 will hunt his ass down to kick it.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I love the way that owls flight. They are amazing animals. I still love the video where an owl just times the flap of its wings to flying through the fork in a tree. Amazing. Once he wants revenge, he'll just go after his victim. Revenge for all

Reaper having to repair lame stories will chaff his buttcheeks, but he'll do it if it means he can get the hell out of there. And also try to aggravate everyone that comes near him. Look 76, keep the bitterness down?
steadypulse: (Spent the entire damn day)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-04-07 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, same. There's one out there where the owl flies between two people standing very close together by tucking it's wings in.

The one other ability that comes so very natural; being an aggravating SOB whenever he damn well pleases. Nope, full up bitterness has his own revenge to enact.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-07 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Owls are actually amazing. So I guess that means that Reaper is also amazing, since he based his outfit on owls!

He uses his nastiness as weapon against others to both keep them at a distance and to see who has the stomach to tolerate.
steadypulse: (You can't forget about that part)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-04-08 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
They're right up there with foxes for me tbh, awesome animals. He at last likely based his mask off a barn owl because it's hard to deny that shaping.

The moment someone cracks the code he's doomed.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-08 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He definitely did, since he fancies himself as an aspect of death. Most of his outfits have basis in death, except I guess his Blackwatch outfit which was just him wanting to be comfortable.......

That is generally how it goes, but most people dislike him so much it happens very rarely.
steadypulse: (And the too much power thing)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-04-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Reason I wonder when we'll get a skin of him in his Red Death outfit, because long live theater and literature nerd Gabo. I will forever love him and his tactical hoodie and what looks like those nice and comfy stretchy fabric pants.

Meanwhile, we end up working on them accidentally beating down walls while full of denial.

[personal profile] no_reload 2020-04-09 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been waiting for Red Death for awhile, but maybe they don't want to animate that many frills? I feel like at that stage of his life, he was going for 'retired and slumming it in comfort' look. No one would assume just looking at him that he's high up in the ranks.

That's usually how it works with these two. Constant violence and arguments that finally work them open to hashing out a friendship again.
steadypulse: (I half know what I'm doing)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2020-04-11 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Frills and ruffles and feathers- They made a spray reminiscent of it and likely all that'll be gotten. Exactly, tho. More so when Blackwatch "didn't exist" and everything, nothing suspicious and just there because he had a big hand in the start etc.

Work it all out until they exhaust themselves to the point they're left in silence before they can part ways and end up talking little by little. Snarking a bit.
