Workshop #5: April 2020

Workshop #5: April 2020—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Public Registration will open May 3, but anyone with an invite and current players can register at any time. Claims will open April 26.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Mod Thread.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

!!! OKAY BUT...

"Steals from the rich to give to the poor and takes little/nothing for himself" would be a hilarious Essence to give Louie, because iirc they don't have to match and it would let me do some really interesting character development things, potentially.

HMM.

ETA:
Sometimes the essence matches the character, sometimes it's just completely random.

HMM.

Right? It would be really interesting

Hell, imagine at times him having to take someone's head in to his lap or something. Just being in his presence on top of cuddling plushie Zen.

One day I'll not be tired, one day

Robin Hood Essence

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-03-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Appearance: The comics came through for me! Although in this case, he wouldn't have those boots, and some kind of leather/fabric instead of chainmail.

Abilities: From a Robin Hood Essence, Louie will gain great skill with a bow and arrow, and some swordplay talent, too, as well as the ability to pick-pocket/general sleight of hand. Down the line, he'd gain the ability to use magical illusions to disguise himself.

Quirks: Charitableness. While Louie will still see appeal in having money and nice things, when he sees someone who would benefit from something he has, he'll be compelled to give it to them.

turbodew: (To adventure!)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding Robin Hood. He could still be pretty agile and obviously have excellent bow & arrow skills and with a sword, plus maybe pickpocketing sleight-of-hand, good at tracking in the forest. And he could work up to being a master of disguises. Plus all of Louie's normal skills of being able to see all the angles - making plans and whatnot.
talkyourwayout: (Excited)

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-01 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh I’m becoming increasingly sold on this! Thanks for the ideas. Maybe some illusion-type disguise abilities gained later on, as opposed to literal disguises? Getting some magic in there, you know?
turbodew: (Let's Dew it!)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actual magic is good. Maybe it starts as literal disguises and it grows from there?

And I enjoy what you have as his quirk. Very fitting for Robin Hood and Louie too - good for helping Louie grow a little more.
turbodew: (Dewing it Dewey style)

Dewey Duck | Ducktales 2017

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Xae | [plurk.com profile] Tsukeru
Character: Dewford "Dewey" "Turbo" Duck
Canon: Season 2 maybe, not decided yet
Age: 11
Bio Blurb: Wiki

Personality Blurb:

Dewey is the reckless, (relatively) fearless adventure-seeker of the triplets. Always up for a good treasure hunt even if he cares little about the treasure itself and more about the danger that comes with it. Often times, he tends to overdo it and gets into more trouble than he should but it is something he works on (plus has the help of his family). He tends to "Dew" terrible puns and enjoys having heaps of attention pointed in his direction. At one point he even attempted to have Only Child Day because he is the middle child. Extremely loyal towards his family and friends, often going out of his way to help them. Yet when he feels betrayed by one of his trusted people, Dewey takes it very hard and is slow to forgive. Even outside of adventuring, Dewey is extremely active - enjoying normal activities such as sports and can have a tendency to hide big secrets even from his own siblings. He's not the sharpest crayon in the bunch intelligence-wise but that's why he has others around. Dewey is usually upbeat and doesn't tend to get dragged down so when it happens, it's pretty bad.

Preferred Essence(s): Peter Pan
Looking For: Other essences that would put him into an adventurous role while still being a good guy.

Appearance: The blue one. As Peter Pan it'd be like this except in blue.

Abilities: Flight - it would start as hovering over land/water at first and work up to higher limits. Skilled swordsman - excellent at fighting in general. Mimicry - able to copy voices and sounds. Staying young - he'll never get older. Danger sense - can sense when he's about to be in danger. Dewey will start with a small island where he lives and it will "come to life" whenever he's there. It will expand to include more adventurous places as he gets stronger. Eventually, he'll work up to being able to will things into existence (NPC characters such as random mermaids/pirates will be the last stage).

Quirks: He'd be forgetful of things such as people and adventures if they aren't around or he's reminded of them.

Goal: Wanting him to make meaningful connections and learn lessons that will truly stick with him despite his quirk. Also just enjoy playing him in this great setting.
Extra: I'm also considering another character who is from a non-popular canon, trying to get back into the swing of RP and this game is easy-going and fun so...
Questions: Nope.

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-01 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I love those powers and I really dig the quirk, too! I have nothing to add, tbh, but I'm excited!
turbodew: (That might be my fault)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone's one true fear - Dewey flying through the sky. Good thing he has those danger senses now. And just imagining Louie having to remind him of the rest of their family.
talkyourwayout: (Excited)

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-01 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, when I think about Dewey forgetting Della it breaks my heart in a really good way.

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-01 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good idea!

And thank you!
turbodew: (Um hold up what?)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, the day Louie brings up mom and the others and Dewey responds with "who's that?" is one I'm excited for.

[personal profile] talkyourwayout 2020-04-01 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes please, same. It's going to be awful.
turbodew: (Not good)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Lemme just break your heart, duck style.

Huey Duck | DuckTales (2017)

[personal profile] goingbythebook 2020-04-01 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Zumi | [plurk.com profile] zumidotexe
Character: Hubert "Huey" Duck
Canon: DuckTales 2017, post-season 2
Age: 11
Bio Blurb: (Wiki.)

Personality Blurb: Huey Duck, despite being a pre-teen child, is intelligent beyond his years. He spends his time in study, wanting to unravel all the mysteries of the universe, and before he's 20 if he can. He's a Senior Junior Woodchuck (roughly equivalent to the Boy Scouts) and is DARN proud of the fact. He often follows their rules to the letter, always has his Guidebook on him, and writes down all new mysteries to document them for the cause- which, since he's adventure capitalist Scrooge McDuck's great-nephew, is a LOT of mysteries.

While Huey's certainly smart, he's also a kid. He's active, experiences simpler emotions rather than the more complex sort of adults, and despite his brain does not often think things through. In fact, he thinks himself too smart in many aspects and thus gets caught up in his own ego, thinking himself right and having to be proven wrong many times before it gets through. He's the (self-proclaimed) leader of himself and his two brothers, and will go to great lengths to protect them, at times at risk to his own health. Sometimes he thinks things better for them than they do, but he means well.

Leading from that, Huey is generally kind. He's always open now to new facts, new people, and new ways of living. He does have a bit of a hero worship complex, which is currently mostly focusing on local Duckburg hero Gizmoduck, but he in general looks up to many of the adults in his life. He does, however, have a TEMPER; he's Donald Duck's nephew, after all. Don't make him angry or you'll regret it.

Preferred Essence(s): Dr. John Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories
Looking For: Overall, looking for scholars or other academic-type figures

Appearance: Dressed like a Victorian gentleman, with some red hints; vest, the band around the hat, etc. A little too young for the moustache, but he does have a bowler hat Watson was often portrayed with. No pants, but spats because come on.

Abilities: Some slight heightened observational powers (after all, Watson did learn from Holmes somewhat). A crackshot when aiming a weapon (or anything being improvised as such). Permanent advantage on medicine check rolls, so to speak. Eventually whatever he writes can come true to varying degrees (think of the end of the Futurama episode "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid"), with that levelling up as he goes along. At first that'll just start with written suggestion that can be shaken off, but will eventually turn into being able to summon creatures or literary heroes for a given attack/set of time.

Quirks: He'll dip into increasingly flowerier speech the more excited he starts to get about a subject

Goal: Honestly, just looking to have some adventure with him, expand his personality, and see where he goes~
Extra: I picked Watson over Holmes himself because, while Huey fashions himself a detective of sorts, he is... not. He's also, despite being the leader, the support role, just like Watson with his loyalty and friendship to Holmes. While he's active, he's not AS active as say, Dewey. So any alternate suggestions could certainly follow these same sorts of roles! Not necessarily the sidekick, but certainly the deuteragonist.
Questions: N/A

Couldn't find the hand-lick gif from Town Where Everyone Was Nice this time around. I'm going to keep an eye out, so to speak, for the scholars and such but man Watson is really perfect, tbh. I love what you've pointed out about the support role thing! Those abilities are great! (And the medical skill will come in handy I'm sure!)
turbodew: (To adventure!)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dewteragonist, you mean. /fingerguns

Agreeing that Watson is a great choice for Huey. Perhaps he could even have a medical bag that can magically summon whatever he requests from it. Have a journal with a never-ending set of pages for him to write in. Maybe eventually he'll be able to summon a Hound that could act as a weapon/defense.

[personal profile] goingbythebook 2020-04-01 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, it works! Knowing these brothers, those medical skills would come in extreme handiness. XD
goingbythebook: (You really mean it?)

[personal profile] goingbythebook 2020-04-01 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay but if I ever make a working journal for Dewey I'm stealing that as a username, just so you know.

Oooh, I like that medical bag idea! Ditto the Hound. Some other powers might reference other stories too, hmm...
turbodew: (Something smells fishy)

[personal profile] turbodew 2020-04-02 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Dew it. :3

He could definitely gain more abilities along the way that do reference the other books. Definitely twist things to be magical in nature to add to Huey's list of things he can do. Kind of like the way he'd earn badges in Junior Woodchucks.

......So because of the whole 3-in-1 deal, I just had the random idea of what if the Moirai, the three Fate sisters from Greek mythology. Mostly since I'm not sure if Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva can be considered as "one" essence given how although they're in a group, they're more like individual entities whereas the Moirai are always a trio and the theme is similar to what you're going for (fate of life and all that).

Since they're spinners, could use spools of threads and have powerful scissors as a weapon, capable of cutting through a lot of different materials. Of course she wouldn't be able to cut anyone's life, but perhaps being able to read if their life is in danger.

I CAN GIVE MORE IDEAS but I'll wait to see what you think first lmao

[personal profile] richestduck 2020-04-04 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so looking forward to Louie as Robin Hood you have no idea. XD

Though interesting idea: practicing swordplay with Uncle Scrooge.

Also that time gap. Woof.

Yeah no this should be. Interesting.

The Dewey forgetting stuff seems strangely fitting for him.
