Workshop #4: September 2019

Workshop #4: September 2019—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Registration will open October 1. Claims will open September 24.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Game Info page.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

HAH stuck in partial transformation, especially if it was the donkey head, would be great, too! All of those ideas are good so I say go for it! Some more random ideas I thought are more donkey the animal related than essence specific. Donkeys were used to help guard sheep against wolves and coyotes, so perhaps he could be particularly strong against those types. Another idea is using horseshoes, like being able to conjure some to use as weapons or something.

And yesss on the quirk! Fortunately there aren't a lot of farms, but maybe the sight of a farmer could make him wary? Not necessarily afraid just...might keep a bigger distance...it's cool, cool cool cool.

LMFAO HOW DO HANDS MY NECK IS SO SHORT WHERE IS MY BEAK I mean maybe he could be like that at first, but once the initial panic wears off it comes more naturally so that he can adjust in a matter of minutes and a day or so for the basics rather than a long time. But still be clumsy at first because what is human. At least he has a head start in knowing how to walk with two legs! They're just. Different. lmao.

It should be done, yes. And probably could upgrade the rice somehow, but the only things that come to mind are the rice grains turning into something else (suddenly Crane has porridge on his head haaa).

YEAH The White Cat definitely seems more versatile in terms of potential powers, so I might go with that one.

(I just really wanna turn her into a cat okay)

The only thing I can think of for the locket bracelet is it showing a picture of her beloved, and from the canon point I’m taking her from she’s not sure how to feel that she’s wearing a locket with Daring’s picture in it lol
ricebird: (Aaaaah so precious~)

MY KNEES ARE BENDING THE WRONG WAY THIS IS WEIRD

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe the knowledge of being human translates mostly for his Kung Fu ability so he can still fight, but has to get used to a lot of other things as a human

Maybe someday he can also get noodles haha

Perfect! Also, I was thinking for her Quirk, while she's normally able to control switching between being human and being a cat, maybe she suddenly turns into a cat when she starts feeling sad?

Okay. Figured out the canon point after talking with Della's mun.

Going to pull from post-"Last Crash of the Sunchaser" when he's lost the kids plus Donald a second time because he lost Della. Showing up in this strange place and finding her is gonna make him upset but mostly at himself because he finally found her and he can't give her back to them.

He just needs some time to stop being pissed at himself. Honestly.

But yes I am tempted. If that would be allowed when the Fish Prince has nothing to do with seahorses. It would be cute.....I do love seahorses.

You can be pretty creative and stretch pretty far when it comes to the abilities, so yes definitely doable 8D Rather than say you're restricted to just the essence, it's more like you take their theme and run with it.

So merform for mostly human if not entirely so and fishy form because of the story and seahorse for when he is really weak. Yes okay I got this.

Varian | Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure

[personal profile] sonrises 2019-09-14 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Satyr | [plurk.com profile] dolewhip
Character: Varian
Canon: Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (Post-Season 1 finale, probably)
Age: 15 (By his current canon point. He was 14 in his first appearance.)
Bio Blurb: (Wiki)
Varian is a teen alchemist, in a canon where alchemy is more closely aligned with chemistry than anything else. When he's first introduced, he's an ally who helps Rapunzel with her re-grown hair and befriends the princess, Eugene, and - eventually - Cassandra, who he develops a crush on. It's revealed that Varian's work with alchemy and science are rooted in trying to help the village of Old Corona, of which his father is the leader - but his over-eagerness means these attempts often end in disaster. In his next appearance, Varian has created an invention that produces a mineral of his own discovery - he also mentions to Rapunzel and Cassandra that "spiky rocks" have started cropping up in Old Corona. The two women explain that they found these rocks a while back, themselves, and that they were the catalyst for Rapunzel's hair returning. Rapunzel tells Varian to keep this a secret, and assures him that the three of them can figure out the secret of the rocks.

However, the rocks continue to spread and threaten to ruin Old Corona village. Varian takes matters into his own hands, working with alchemy to try getting rid of the rocks, against his father's wishes. However, Varian has seen Quirin - his dad - fail to bring up the issue with the King of Corona, and feels there is no other way. These experiments ultimately result in a strange chemical reaction that leaves Quirin encased in amber due to a move to protect his son. Varian's relationship with Quirin has always been complicated - he looks up to the man, and wants to make him proud, but doesn't feel his father understands him. Still, he's predictably distraught over his father's fate, and seeks help from Rapunzel. Unfortunately, the timing is all wrong - there's a horrible blizzard threatening Corona, and Rapunzel must put the needs of all Corona's subjects over Varian's needs - and fairly so.

However, this feels like a betrayal to Varian, who is dragged off by the guards during his desperate pleas. Varian sets a scheme in motion to retrieve the remains of the healing flower that first gave Rapunzel her powers, believing it's the only thing that can save his dad. He convinces Rapunzel to help him - but when he realizes that the flower's magic is now in Rapunzel's hair, Varian turns to full-on villainy. He kidnaps the Queen of Corona to lure Rapunzel and use the Queen as a bargaining chip to get Rapunzel to help him. When her hair doesn't do the trick, either, Varian positively snaps. Using an automaton of his own creation, he attacks Rapunzel and her allies, essentially deciding that if he can't be happy, neither can the princess who "wronged" him. Rapunzel is able to stop him, of course, and Varian is arrested, though the King assures Rapunzel that he'll be helped while imprisoned. Varian, for his part, is still determined to make his father proud - at any cost.

Personality Blurb:
Varian is, simply put, a mess. When he's first introduced, he's an overeager, awkward, but well-intending teen who just wants to help others, prove his worth, and - most of all - make his father proud. He scoffs at magic, gets excited easily, and his social skills are lacking, but there's no denying that the boy is brilliant. He just needs to look at the big picture and consider the full consequences of his actions. However, as the series goes on, and misfortune comes into Varian's life, we see that he can be malicious and conniving. Loyalty is important to Varian, but he's a kid who expects too much from that. Just as he's easily excited, he's also quick to anger and jump to conclusions.

It's worth noting that Varian won't be all-out villainous in FT, because he doesn't feel anyone here has hurt him or wronged him. However, while he'll be closer to his old self, he'll still be guarded and bitter.

Preferred Essence(s): I don't have a strong preference here, yet, but the idea of Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk could work, as suggested by LWP. In the original fairytale, there's nothing especially villainous about the giant Jack steals from and ultimately kills. He just feels his needs are more important than the giant's, which is... Very fitting for Varian. But I'm super open to other ideas!

Also, man, Daedalus would work extremely well - lost a family member, vindictive, and an inventor - but I'm not sure if that'd potentially be an issue, because Della has Icarus as an essence, and I don't want to monopolize that myth, ha!
Looking For: Again, super open to other ideas, especially characters who go from "good to bad" to serve their own needs, but still have some moral grayness to them. Also, Varian is extremely bright and clever, so essences with those traits are great!

Appearance: Link. Changes to his appearance will depend on essence chosen, but for Jack, it'd probably just be a wardrobe change.

Abilities: If I do go with Jack, he'll likely gain the ability to grow and/or heal plantlife, which would be deliciously ironic.

Quirks: For Jack, I can see him getting a case of "sticky fingers" with valuable items, not understanding why he's compelled to steal.

Goal: Despite having a very mixed reaction to the Tangled series, I love this character, and I especially love the idea of him growing as a person and eventually being able to accept that what he did was wrong - there's an interesting group of characters in this game that could take that in all sorts of directions!
Extra: Nope!
Questions: Nope!

Horseshoes might be a bit too far off from the actual essence, but I can see where you're going with this.

And farmers could look like anything. Farms themselves, on the other hand... Yeah those places could remind him of death.

You can be very creative when it comes to essence abilities and can expand pretty far so long as it keeps to the general theme of the essence itself. So don't feel you have to be too restricted! Whatever makes it easier and more fun to play.

Aaah, by farmers I was thinking the very obvious ones, but otherwise, yes farms.

Hmmmm while Daedalus would be interesting, yeah, I agree it might be better to let another mun have it, just so that way Della could potentially have someone to bounce off of if someone ever claims it.

For Jack, I can see quite a few different powers, and it helps that there are five beans in the original tale for him to use. Maybe there are different color beans (that can regenerate after a certain amount of time) that give him different powers. Plant manipulation/growth, shrinking, invisibility, short-range teleportation (due to the otherworldliness of the clouds), something like increased acrobatics or stamina to go with his climbing prowess. Maybe even some fighting advantage over giants and ogres. (Also congrats, Varian, cows like you. Maybe you can get a white cow to ride.) Over time he could also gain the ogre's golden hen or golden harp. As for perks... kleptomania, need I say more?

OKAY SO. The idea of Victor Frankenstein was accidentally brought to my attention. He was into alchemy, made monsters, is a tragic figure or mad scientist jerk depending on what version of the story you go with, lost his father for reasons that were ultimately his own fault, and has the "what's best for me and my own" mentality. These all apply to Varian, too, so I'm going to jot down power ideas here. I'll probably skip a quirk if I go with Victor, because... Varian's already fairly similar, hahaha... Why do I like him again?

The main power I'm thinking of is the ability to bring small objects to life temporarily. Think kitchen utensils, tools, even toys! It'd also be cool if he had a healing ability - and there's that delicious irony again - that would start out pretty mild but could potentially grow over time.

Okay but consider that Shizuo is Frankenstein and last time Varian was here he was interested in the lab that was in Shizuo's house.

Yeeees Frankenstein! Okay so, at the risk of being lazy, here's the workshop for our previous Frankenstein, if you'd live some more inspiration for powers and quirks. REALLY love the idea of Varian's manifesting through mechanical objects instead of straight-up necromancy, though, that'll be VERY interesting.

Oh! I thought otherwise. But in that case I have an idea for weapons: How about weaponized toys from the 1880's? My first thought was jacks that doubled as bombs or shurikens... They're gonna be ranged since Kokichi is not used to things like boss fights IRL. Plus it suits someone who likes to pull strings and push buttons at the same time.

I can see Kokichi trying to bullshit his way out of being on a farm. He is not going to admit he has a sudden fear of them unless you manage to back him into a corner.

(same person and IGNORE THAT ACCIDENTAL SUBSCRIPTION POP UP WHY)

Oh that would be interesting! It would fit with Lampwick's original nature, as well as a reference to him being a "child." As for them being bombs/shurikens, definitely doable. Although now I'm thinking of something along the "prank" lines, like confetti explosions or mudpie bombs... ...Yeah they're pretty weird.... Though thinking even more, what if taunts and provokes could work similar like in JRPGs/MMOs? Even if what he says or does isn't really much different from someone else, the effect can be stronger for him so he could more easily distract and frustrate his enemy/target.

...By the way, every character gets their own housing based off their residence. I'm not saying it should be a farm. But what if a stable/small cottage that's like a stable or has one attached to it.
