Workshop #4: September 2019

Workshop #4: September 2019—

§ instructions.

Welcome to Forgotten Tales storybook character essence workshop! Here players can come together and discuss what storybook characters they are considering for their character's essence, their new potential abilities, and even ask for help if you can't think of anything on your own.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Workshop participation is required for Registration as this basically takes the place of the traditional application form, as well as posting to the Test Drive. You don't have to post together at the same time (you can do one first and then the other), but they are needed eventually.

  2. Participation in the Workshop does not guarantee a spot on either Claims or Registration, but you will need it to keep a Claim so there's no harm in trying early. Feel free to look over previous Workshops.

  3. Make sure to check the Character Roster and Essence List to see if your choices are not already taken.

  4. The character and essence don't necessarily have to perfectly match, and all characters will inherit characteristics and themes from that particular storybook character. You are free to be creative and take elements from related works and variations (like Disney), but try to keep it central to the original version. Refer to the Character section of the Game Info as a refresher on how essences and their abilities work.

  5. Storybook characters can be from any work of literary fiction such as fairy tales, folklore, fables, nursery rhymes, classics, plays, mythos, legends, etc. They can be well-known or obscure, and origins must pre-date the 1950s.

  6. Because the game currently doesn't allow duplicate essences, list your top preference and any others you're considering, but also be open for other suggestions. And if you see someone else list one you are considering, list it, anyway! Anyone could change their mind. Just don't be salty or badger anyone about their choice, otherwise it's an automatic boot out the door. The goal is to try to not only match the best essence to the character, but also one that people can have fun with.

  7. Although you can only register one character, you can workshop multiple in case you are having difficulties in deciding who to pick.

  8. Registration will open October 1. Claims will open September 24.

If you have any further questions about this or anything in general, comment to the Game Info page.

§ form.

If you're ready, just fill out the following form and discuss away! One character per comment.

Player: Player ID w/ contact
Character: Character looking to bring in
Canon: (and canon point)
Age: (of the character)
Bio Blurb: Instead of a full written history, please link a wiki page AND provide a 1-2 paragraph summary of the character's backstory. If no wiki page is available, that's okay; you're free to link a write-up if you have one or feel like making one. The summary is more of an "at a glance" to help those not familiar to get a basic idea of who the character is and what they were doing in their canon. If it helps, pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme. What key important things about your character's history would you want to point out to others?

Personality Blurb: You are free to link to anything pre-written such as an app for another game, but for our purposes you must include a 1-2 paragraph blurb highlighting the main elements of the character's personality. If it helps, pick out up to 5 vices and 5 virtues that you'd associate with them and just toss in a few sentences about it. Again, you can pretend you're writing a blurb for a CR Meme.

Preferred Essence(s): Have one or a couple already in mind? List them here! Include reasons why you are thinking about that particular essence and how you would work it with the character.
Looking For: Open to other ideas? What kind of storybook character would you be interested in? Things you're not interested in should also be mentioned.

Appearance: Any notable features both for the character in general and any appearance or style changes you may be considering to match their essence.

Abilities: Whether you have an essence in mind or not, talk about what kind of abilities you're hoping to recreate or gain while in game. Any weapons that are going to be regained or explored? What abilities or weapons are lost? Skills?

Quirks: Are you interested in gaining any quirks of the storybook character? Or do you already have one already in mind? Need suggestions from your list? A reminder that the current limit is one.

Goal: What do you hope to do while in game? This could range from just having fun with the setting to exploring new aspects of the character because of the setting.
Extra: Anything else you'd like to ask or talk about. Can be about the essences or just general ideas of what you'd like to hopefully play out.
Questions: Any other questions you might have.

Post away and go buzz about everyone else!

Upgrade like whoa from demi-god to actual god. I mean I know Percy was offered immortality and all in canon but. Dragon though.

I could see the temper or emotional moments meaning he loses control to at least some extent though, yeah.
sofoskoritsi: (burns through Rome)

[personal profile] sofoskoritsi 2019-09-11 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he'd have to work up to godly-level in terms of powers but it would be a unique way to keep the abilities he already has. And I mean, who doesn't want to change into a dragon? It can start small like an arm changes or grows scales strong enough to stand up to a blade and then when he gets better/stronger, eventually he goes full dragon.

I mean he did make a toilet explode early into canon so it wouldn't be a terrible new quirk? But basically his mood is reflected in nearby water sources, you could even add in the good feelings.
natation: (By one)

[personal profile] natation 2019-09-11 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I figured that would be like, leveled up over time to get that majorly powerful to God status sort of thing. And lbr the scales would be good considering how often he gets into fights. Annabeth would have to be glad of that if it can help protect him?

And lol yeah that is true. The water being calm and inviting when he is happier.

Rosabella Beauty | Ever After High

[personal profile] legacyofarose 2019-09-11 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Usami | [plurk.com profile] usamichan13
Character: Rosabella Beauty
Canon: Ever After High, mid-Epic Winter
Age: around 16/17
Bio Blurb: Wiki

Personality Blurb:
In Ever After High, students can choose to be Royals - those who wish to follow in their parents' footsteps and fulfill the stories expected of them, or Rebels - those who wish to write their own destiny. Rosabella has chosen the path of Rebel, but not because she does not like her parents' story. In fact, she is very proud to be the daughter of Beauty and the Beast, of the lesson that the story represents, and is "hexcited" to meet the prince of her story. But the reason Rosabella has chosen to be a Rebel is because she feels her own happily ever after is far less important than helping others.

With a big heart, Rosabella deeply cares about all animals, and is able to see the good and beauty in even beastly creatures. But because beasts tend to be treated badly in Fairy Tale society, Rosabella fights on their behalf, using her authority to campaign for their rights. Intelligent, she isn't afraid to question things that others might not, and urges others to try to see things differently. And because she is able to see the good in others, that includes getting people to look at themselves differently, as she does her best to guide them to reach the potential that she knows they're capable of.

Preferred Essence(s): Honestly, since I'm pretty sure Beauty and the Beast is off the table, I don't really have an idea for her? I thought about Persephone at first, but I already have Bridge as Orpheus, so I don't know if I want another Greek mythology figure. I'm also trying to stay away from the more common fairy tales.

Looking For: I'm really open to anything, but maybe something to do with someone seeing people's true selves, or something to do with animals

Appearance: Here. Depending on what Essence she has, there could be some changes.

Abilities: Back home, Rosabella has the ability to read and decipher a person's aura, and can see who they really are. Maybe an Essence related to that somehow.

Quirks: I honestly have no idea

Goal: Just to have fun with Rosabella seeing what it's like to actually rewrite a well-known story
Extra: I'm so bad at thinking up Essences, sorry.
Questions: Why do I do this to myself?

Ooooh~ Okay so, despite the damsel in distress stereotype, there are SO many stories that involve girls saving themselves or their men through cunning, especially in Grimm tales. Are there any specific themes or powers, maybe regions you'd have in mind for her?

Although... I do have one essence in mind, but how much do you care about the essence's gender?

Can confirm that Ryujin is on the table, although the powers might start small at first. (We let Godzilla have Amaterasu's essence, gods are definitely on the table.)

And daaang Xae has some great suggestions for starting powers, I like it!
ricebird: (Should I go sweet or savory?)

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh there are a LOT of directions we can take with this, even in the realm of stories that have Beauty and the Beast like themes without being the story itself. First off: do you want an essence that's based on a human protagonist (usually the curse breaker), or someone who's transformed?
ricebird: (Proud and Pleased)

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, Medusa would be an adorable fit, and I like the powers you have in mind for her, and I wouldn't mind helping you expand on those if you're set on it. And also had some other (very horrible) essences in mind, like the Little Match Girl, Eurydice, Baldur, Achilles, or Cú Chulainn, but then I looked over her description, and I thought of something perfect.

Snow White. Striking white features, rotten luck and tormented by the people she lived with until finding a new home, keeping a tight hold of her kindness, happily doing their housework, killed by a family member (even if the motives are vastly different), dying young but her grave plays an important role in her story? I think Snow White would be an amazing match, and we could come up with some great powers to go with it too.

Odin intrigues me. He did disguise himself as a stork rather well when faking his own death. Plus there is still the Jormungandr connection which was really what I was going for with Thor.

Plus in the original Carl Barks comics, Scrooge could communicate with birds. 2017 Scrooge speaks bear...

Being the transformed one could be fun! But I’ll take any ideas at this point lol

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm okay. OOH! There's actually a couple tales I can think where the lady and the cursed one are the same and also serve as a helper character for their Prince Charming: the Frog Princess and the White Cat.

Another story that might work is Cap o' Rushes, which is a sort of Cinderella story where a noble lady has to flee her home and winds up disguising herself, ending up as a cook in another young lord's house, and then it's basically Cinderella expect the glass slipper is a ring in a bowl of gruel. (There are lots of other versions of the tale, if you wanna look on Surlalune, buuut the reasons for leaving home can be a bit squicky, depending on the telling.)

Yes, I am not sure I have anything to contribute essence-wise but Isa! Let Sora get to know him and introduce him to all of Roxas' friends.

Also yes to mochi.

Mooooore ducks! Hai Cybra! Reminds me I need to throw Sora at comic-Scrooge. But he does know Della and of course, KH Donald.

And I'm liking the Odin Essence suggested by LWP. He is essentially the head of the McDuck family (not counting his parents who are... not around mostly) and just somehow seems to know when the boys are getting into trouble.
skyofreality: (☆ Yeah That's What I Think ☆ Belief)

Gender does not matter to me~ So if you've got a male's role, lay it on me.

Hm, well I would like to avoid throwing her into something that would NOT put her in the same power column as Percy. AKA maybe making her more vulnerable to water (I'm not married to the idea tho). But something like invisibility and illusions could be fitting now that I think about it.

Again, I'm very flexible and open when it comes to Annabeth.
ricebird: (Happy Girl)

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooh those are interesting powers. I'll see if I can find someone that can grant those if this one doesn't suit, buuut I was thinking maybe Fionn mac Cumhaill from Irish Mythology. Raised by two awesome ladies, craneskin bag with a hammerspace of magic weapons, and access to all the worlds wisdom by sucking on his salmon oil-burned thumb.(And Annabeth could also have super-strength and the ability to grow into a giant, because apparently Fionn was a giant in about half his myths for some reason.) She could also have an affinity with deer or possibly transform into one, a nod to his wife Sadhbh and son Oisín.

As for quirks... temper and vindictiveness seem to be the ones that come to mind most, if Annabeth doesn't have either already. (Admittedly I haven't read the books, so I'm 95% canon blind.)
ricebird: (Food glorious food!)

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeees. Alright, Odin it is! Got a good idea in mind for powers and quirks?
richestduck: (Let me see...)

[personal profile] richestduck 2019-09-11 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Love the idea of him losing an eye and gaining raven familiars to scout and spy through (maybe the eye he "lost" actually looks like a raven eye when it opens if it's not missing outright) with the potential for lupine or Sleipnir-esque familiars in the future. I also like the idea of runic magic, too, if that's not too much.

As far as quirks go, he has an Archive beneath the Bin, so him building up a new Archive, gathering and hoarding information would work for him. Particularly if he's using what he can spy through his familiars to add to it all if not give him the locations of stuff to gather for the Archive.

Eeeeexcellent!
richestduck: (Tipping the hat)

[personal profile] richestduck 2019-09-11 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Howdy!

And, yeah, it looks like I'm going with the Odin Essence. XD Just need to pick a canon point.
richestduck: (What do you want from me?)

[personal profile] richestduck 2019-09-11 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So would having those powers be too much or should I just dial back to just the familiars?
ricebird: (^_^)

[personal profile] ricebird 2019-09-11 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Heck, you can probably throw in the disguise and invisibility powers, too, unless you'd rather save those for further down the line.
richestduck: (I'M BACK)

[personal profile] richestduck 2019-09-11 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Disguise would be good to have right off with invisibility coming later. ^^

Coolness. Now the hard part: canon point
skyofreality: (☆ Got It Memorized? ☆ Reminisce)

[personal profile] skyofreality 2019-09-11 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If you do go earlier, you always have the option of canon updating. But like how pre-series were you thinking?
richestduck: (Pleasantly Surprised)

[personal profile] richestduck 2019-09-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm starting to lean towards between "Last Crash of the Sunchaser" and "Shadow War" because it's terrible. XD;;;

Piggybacking briefly on the transformation "penalty," a fun one that some folks use is when a character uses too much of their power is actually turning into a smaller, baby form of the animal (like the wolves end up being puppies). In that state they are weakened and are stuck that way for a few hours or even up to the next morning. Could do something fun like that, like perhaps if she's stuck with a "penalty" of having an animal trait or transformed herself due to using her powers out of spite/selfishness, one way for it to clear is to do something generous or benevolent.

Also Magicaaaa.

(I usually leave LWP to the essences because she's a goddess at it plus Circe is a pretty A+ choice already, but I'll throw the random suggestion of the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz—or Oz himself for fake magic hah.)
