Once upon a time there was A Girl, who was orphaned by The War between Humans and the Omnics - machines that had been created and gained sentience when no one was looking, apparently. She grew up on the streets and learned very quickly that presented with a smile and charming words, people paid attention to little else. So the The Girl learned - how to hack machines and information networks, how to say the right thing to someone (or the wrong thing, correctly). She became an asset to the gang who ran the bad parts of her hometown - 'Los Muertos'. With her talents they became a force to be reckoned with. Until one day, The Girl ended up somewhere she shouldn't have been.
She'd stumbled on a conspiracy and on that day, the The Girl disappeared and Sombra emerged. With a neural upgrade and the world at her literal fingertips, Sombra led hacker collectives and began destroying the chokehold of corporations and corruption alike. Every time she made sure that she had the upper hand and when the shadow organization Talon approached her for recruitment, Sombra jumped at the opportunity to have an employer with infinite pockets. Despite being beholden to powerful people, Sombra's work - the things she remains invested in are still unknown.
Personality Blurb: Orphaned during the Omnic Crisis after all, one of thousands struck by such tragedy -Sombra taught herself to hack and began to unravel the ‘how’ and ‘why’ people and power worked the way that they did. Sombra’s curiosity was honed sharply in the face of adversity and Los Muertos took her in, hungry for any sort of edge in their revolution. They looked out for her and in return she gave them the information she discovered while hacking and with this protection she grew bolder. Sombra went unchallenged for most of her early life, supporting high ambitions and fostering a somewhat high opinion of herself that never quite left.
Her opportunism and ease with manipulation would suggest coldness, but she is actually rather playful for someone capable of murder and blackmail. It makes things easier - it’s simpler for Sombra to lead people to the conclusion she wants them to go to than brutishly force them. However, for all of her talent at being where no one wants her and knowing what no one should, Sombra has a rather poor sense of interpersonal timing. Being somewhat reclusive as a hacker, her hyperfocus on inputs and outputs tends to make her resulting relationships shallow by comparison to her peers. Her lack of overall fear leads her to goad people she shouldn’t, like Reaper and Widowmaker, her colleagues in Talon.
Preferred Essence(s): I'm currently torn between two: -The Youth Who Went Forward To Learn Fear: Sombra is confident to a fault and there is a case to make that, her self-preservation is directly proportional to how close she is to getting something she wants. She plays the long game but makes big, brash looking moves and plays both sides against the middle.
-Tlazolteotl (Aztec goddess of filth, purification, fertility and childbirth.): If you have a secret, Sombra will find it, especially if you do not want anyone to find out what's going on. She blackmails people with glee and enjoys unnerving or at the bare minimum, annoying her associates. Given Sombra's attitude and backstory, it's quite easy to give her an 'anti-hero' slant and this would lean her even harder in that direction.
Looking For: I want to stay away from any essences that have innate romantic connection, and I'm really open to anything that leans in on the reckless/fearless/trickster aspects she already has.
Appearance: Sombra is a relatively slight 30 year old evil organization operative/super-hacker. Dark olive skin, a real epic undercut and an aesthetic best described as cyberpunk raver.
If I go to Tlazolteotl, she might develop a more openly sexy edge to the aesthetic. Maybe a more blue-collar edge if I if I go Fearless Youth.
Abilities: The Fearless Youth and Tlazolteotl both operate most powerfully using social constructs. I think it would be fun to play with the visuals - Tlazolteotl always leaves footprints, but she also inspires people to do better, usually out of guilt. Fearless Youth is harder to come up with abilities for.
Quirks: Sombra will likely become more of a pain in the ass, regardless of the essence, its more a question of being more manipulative/blackmail-y or obtuse, like if she doesn't have a reason to to believe something will affect her, it won't.
Goal: I want to see Sombra deal people who think she has some good in her, or folks who meet her with equally mercenary/self-serving tendecn Extra: I missed playing Sombra so I'm excited.
