Barley Lightfoot | Onward

Player: Nyanka | [plurk.com profile] Nyanka
Character: Barley Lightfoot
Canon: Onward, before he goes to pick Ian up from school
Age: Approx. 19 years or so
Bio Blurb: (Wiki isn't that great, yet.) Contains some spoilers for the movie!

Once upon a time, Barley's world was full of magic and wonder... But magic was only available to people who were born with it and hard to master, so technology was invented and society moved on. Now his world looks a lot like a mix between our world, the 80's, and a D&D campaign.

Barley's dad died of terminal illness when he was a kid, leaving him to grow up with his mom and his younger brother. They did alright for a single parent family, but Barley never got closure from his dad since he was too scared of the hospital machines to say goodbye. Nevertheless, he carried on with his life- gaining an interest in the world that once was along the way. He's kind of hit a rut in his life post high school, and his loved ones would really appreciate it if he stopped thinking about the past (and his favorite RPG) and start thinking about his future.

Personality Blurb:
Barley is a rather bold person, always ready for to fearlessly take initiative. Unfortunately, his boldness is a double edged sword. He has a habit of not thinking through things before he does them, which has gotten him in trouble with the law more than once. It doesn't help that he's stubborn at times and always daydreaming about quests of yore- The past and the TRPG that was heavily inspired by the past. He's made so many mistakes people started thinking of him as a screw-up, a title he greatly resents.

Yet he's not trying to hurt anyone. He acts with the best intentions, be it protecting historical landmarks from being destroyed, not letting the past be completely forgotten, or looking out for his family. He encourages his brother in his own special way, and tries to be there for him when he needs it most. If he must choose between his own interests and the interests of his loved ones, his loved ones go first.

Preferred Essence(s): My first thought was Beowulf, but I'm open to suggestions.
Looking For: I know I want to pair Barley with the kind of character you'd find in the Hero's Journey structure, be it the Hero themself, the Trickster or the Mentor. This probably covers a really wide range... No wizards, though, that's Ian's thing.

Appearance: He's a blue elf who also looks like a nerdy frat boy. Has a celtic tattoo circling his upper left arm, and is seen with a cast on his right forearm.

Abilities: In canon, he doesn't really have any magic abilites. What he does have is knowledge on how fantasy tropes usually works based on his TRPG game and the past it was based on. He also knows how to McGyver an automobile together, seeing as he spent a lot of time working on his van, and it still functions despite being held together by duct tape and rope.

As for his essence, I would definitely give him the ability to fight with whatever weapon is associated with his essence. Like, maybe a sword for Beowulf. Again, open to suggestions.

Quirks: None that I can think of, this might change.

Goal: Two things: One, letting Barley experience a world like the one he's read about! The good and bad side, that is. Magic is nice, but he'll have to get used to the lack of modern conveniences like cassette players and gas stations. Second goal is for him to make some friends, and maybe even stumble upon a father figure of sorts.

Extra: I'm taking him from early canon so that I don't spoil anyone who hasn't seen the movie. After a month or so I plan to canon update.

Questions: N/A
